3D Dot Game Heroes

I don't know if I'll love the reality of this game but I certainly love the concept! The $40 price tag makes it an easy purchase, too.

How has Nintendo not sued them? Someone looking over my shoulder during the preview asked me why I was watching an old Zelda playthrough.

Because they haven't infringed any of Nintendo's copyrights for the design work (Zelda sprites in the game) or patents (for the code)

Yeah, plus the game has been out in Japan for about 6 months now with no recourse from Nintendo.

I just get an irrational fear 'cause is so blatantly 8-bit/16-bit Zelda. I know it's irrational too, but I just can't help it.

Maybe not a direct lift but it's pretty damn derivative, in some previews enough so to cause some confusion. My guess is that they play up the parody a lot, and Nintendo is perfectly willing to take the free publicity.

I really, really wish they'd make a 360 version of this game.

Is there any reason they wouldn't? Sony funded or anything? The idea of having to borrow my roommate's PS3 to play a game I own becomes less and less attractive.

Obviously, porting costs time and money, money you have to hope to make up on people who will buy the ported version but not the original.

I don't know what their sales figures are like, but they are probably aiming primarily at the Japanese market. It is a Japanese developer and the game is being published by Atlus, which primarily does niche Japanese games. Given that, they probably assume that their target market is more likely to own a PS3 than an XBox 360 (or both), and that the cost of porting would be less than they'd make back.

That's a very good point. I do wonder, however, if Atlus sees profitability in the venture, whether they might encourage the porting thereof, given that localization has already been taken care of. It would only need to be released in Western territories.

Copy is already preordered. I can't wait.

I imagine it would depend on sales, and whether they could convincingly argue that they could make enough 360 sales to make back the cost. I don't know if Atlus has the kind of margins to take a big financial risk, though, so they probably couldn't guarantee much. Heck, anything could happen, but I wouldn't hold out on the game hoping for a port.

As someone told me in the Valkyria Chronicles thread: "Even the PS3 needs exclusives."

It's a conspiracy to get me to buy a PS3, isn't it?

Huh, I thought this was a download game. Anyway, looks fun.

Wow. 360 owners pining for a port of a PS3 game?

Did I go to bed last night and wake up in a parallel universe?

As I said in the catch-all I started before Mr. Tomaytohead pointed out what the GWJ search bar didn't, I don't buy many games day one, but this one has me seriously considering a pre-order at Gamestop.

So I've preordered the game.

Can hardly wait for the 11th. I'll pick it up on my way home from work.

1 more week, excitement starting to build. Part of me is glad that this game doesn't focus on multiplayer (does it even have multiplayer?), because Tuesday is Super SF4 night, so I probably won't get to play until Wednesday. Gotta start looking up formulas for custom made avatars - I was never any good at pixel art, and adding a 3rd dimension just makes things worse.

I don't know if this was mentioned buy Giant Bomb had a quick look of the game recently. It gives a better understanding of the gameplay.

I am really looking forward to this one. I actually bought Demon's Souls yesterday to get familiar with the devs, but I am a little afraid to play it in case it exposes me as not being the gamer I used to be.

Nah, Demon's Souls isn't as hard as people make it out to be. You just can't play it as if you have regenerating health. Play with caution and you'll be fine.

Watched part of the quick look, and I'm glad to see they provide a ton of character options from outset. I would've liked to see some Demon's Souls characters make an appearance, but I won't complain. Still, I think the first thing I'll do is recreate Link so that I can *really* bury myself in nostalgia.

That's funny.

I just started playing Demon's Souls this past Friday.

The game isn't difficult in an unfair way, it simply forces you to play with caution and calculation. Think of it as the antithesis of something like God of War.

It's hella-rewarding. Just don't be afraid to die, and die, and die.

Yeah I'm really looking forward to this game. I want to make a Link like a lot of people.

I watched the quick look, and laughed out loud at the Demon's Souls joke room. The hosts didn't realize the room was entirely a reference to Demon's Souls, but anyone who's even touched the game should. Sticky White Stuff and Hero's Soul, hehe.

I'm now torn between building a Link character, and playing as the shark. I fear that if I play as the shark, I'll lose track of my character, which would be no good, but still... a shark!

I imagine on launch day there's gonna be posts about how to best build a Link lookalike.

good thing about the game is that you can change your sprite/character every time you load up the game.

Yes, but it apparently keeps the name of the first one you chose. In the quick look, even though they picked the Boxer character, since he had started the game as the Wolf Man everyone called him "Master Wolf Man". So choosing a new avatar on subsequent loads causes some consistency issues.

You can probably choose your name at the beginning; maybe Wolf Man was just the default for the first character he picked, and he went with it.

I'm looking forward to designing a character myself, though I think I'll make the old man instead of link.

Anyone want to lay odds on TTC? It's probably already happened.

I just loaded up my copy, and it's very charming. I wish I could sit around all afternoon and play, but I have to go back to the office.

Is this out in Canada? I'm getting conflicting dates from various online retailers.

Got my copy in hand, hoping to at least try it tonight. We'll see if Borderlands and Street Fighter allow for that.

Man, and here I was hoping that when someone finally got around to remaking Legend of Zelda, it would be a First-Person Shooter.

I'm such a chum.

First Impressions - It's exactly what it appears to be, so take that as you will.

The game is *very* tongue in cheek. References abound to far more than just the obvious Zelda games. In just half an hour of playing, I caught references to Demon's Souls, Dragon Quest, Tenchu, Zelda, Armored Core, and Konami (pretty sure it's Konami, but could be something else).

It's also not as easy a game as the videos make it appear. Your giant sword makes things easier, but as with Zelda there are enemies that charge at you very quickly, only in this game they don't have any ramp up time, so the moment you're in their path they are moving full speed at you. Losing your giant sword makes things significantly more difficult.

So far it's thoroughly enjoyable.
