NFL 2010 Draft + Offseason Thread (also, humiliation!)

It's happened. Boogle, Rat Boy, Grumpicus and I recorded a podcast.

We call it: Booth Review.

Homepage and other such goodies to come, but for now, the important bits:

Podcast RSS feed: http://feeds.feedburner.com/BoothReview
Twitter account: http://www.twitter.com/boothreview

(If you followed me on draft day on Twitter last year, be sure to add the boothreview user to your follows. I'll be doing all my draft tweeting there, sparing all the gaming and tech geeks among my followers from all that jock stuff. )

Make no mistake. We have no damn idea what we're doing, and we pretty much suck. Hang with us, though, as we desperately seek ways to suck less.

Nice intro music

Yeah, it's not exactly licensed, but I did pay for it.

This is pretty good so far. Nice editing to help keep the flow, and the audio is clear. I'm having trouble figuring out who's saying what at times, but you all do a good job of passing it off to particular folks and identifying them.

This would be an utterly awful pick by Oakland, and therefore is about 99.99999% likely to happen.

Maturity issues. Probably struggled academically, given that he apparently had to bounce from one juco to a second one. And he runs a fast 40.

It's not as nuts as taking DHB where they did, but it just felt like an Oakland pick.

*Legion* wrote:

Trying to predict insanity ain't easy. I've had experience in that field.

Enjoying the 'cast so far, but I skipped ahead to hear what yall said about the Ravens pick. Legion, I can't get on board with Golden Tate. I really don't think they're going to take a WR there unless it fits their board (read: Dez Bryant). A cornerback, tight end or defensive lineman is the most likely choice there I think.

Yes, receiver is a need, but I think they're happy with the guys they have this year and can pick up fresh legs next year. Boldin, Mason, Clayton, Williams and somewhere in there Stallworth is the top of the depth chart. They picked up Justin Harper and Marcus Smith in the 2008 draft and while I'm not expecting them to suddenly make an appearance it's entirely possible the team is looking at one of them as a continued project that could make an impact at some point. Of course, they've been waiting for Demetrius Williams to get on the field for years now and he can't seem to stay healthy enough to do it.

Anyway, the Ravens defense is getting old. Kruger, Gooden and Ellerbe give them some youth at linebacker, but the d-line and secondary need help. I see defense all the way unless something falls into their lap.

Do they trade Gaither for a high 2nd rounder and pick up Tate or Demaryius Thomas there? Quite possibly, but they're not going WR in the first round. I'm staking my life on it. Errr, maybe not.

C'mon now... at least they didn't have to listen to the pre-edited version...

Thanks, this means alot to me. Honestly, if I could have edited myself out completely, I would have - that's how much desire I have to hear my own voice - but I worked pretty hard to try to make sure everyone else sounded decent-to-good.

I was honestly terrified to hear my own voice, but I thought it went okay on my end, though definitely next time I dial down my Jack Daniel's intake.

I think you guys did great, especially for a first episode. I could do without the audio cut-ins from movies and stuff if only because it adds a lot of production time and it cuts the flow of conversation. Longer breaks are good, but random John Madden quips are a bit jarring.

I vote Rat Boy hosts the show. Goooood hosting voice and Legion needs someone to shut him the hell up every few minutes and keep the other ladies involved

I'm subscribed! I look forward to the next episode around Christmas, 2013.

It's because I sound like a really drunk version of you, isn't it?

My radio voice is dog poo. That's what Certis is subtly getting at. He is, of course, right.

I am more than happy to take the Mayock role and have Rat Boy be Rich Eisen.

HOT.

NFL Network says:

1. Rams - Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma
Marshall Faulk: "We have a deal in place, he already has the playbook. We need a quarterback, so we're taking Sam Bradford. There are many ways to go, but when you look at the city of St. Louis, you must provide your city and your team a chance and give them hope. And I believe Sam Bradford gives this organization hope."
*Legion*: Sam Bradford, QB, Oklahoma

2. Lions - Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska
Brian Billick: "I'm going to go with Ndamukong Suh, because you build from the inside out on defense. I have the luxury of getting my quarterback in Matthew Stafford last year. It turns out fate has dealt me a good hand. I do like Gerald McCoy a lot. But Suh has the special presence inside. You could flip a coin between Suh and McCoy. If I'm Jim Schwartz, a defensive guy, I go defense. What Suh can do to help my defense is more than what a tackle could do to protect Stafford."
*Legion*: Ndamukong Suh, DT, Nebraska

3. Buccaneers - Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma
Michael Irvin: "The Buccaneers have to be looking at Gerald McCoy, thinking he can bring in what Warren Sapp did there before. Now they have another shot at getting Warren Sapp, and whenever you can get Warren Sapp, you get Warren Sapp."
*Legion*: Gerald McCoy, DT, Oklahoma

4. Redskins - Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma
Rich Eisen: "I think this is the first spot we hear a lot of trade talk. This is the first hot spot where a team might come up and the Redskins could trade down. But, with that being said, I'm hearing Trent Williams more often in this spot than Russell Okung. I'm going with Williams."
*Legion*: Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State

5. Chiefs - Russell Okung, OT, Oklahoma State
Steve Mariucci: "The Chiefs put a lot of money into Matt Cassel, but didn't protect him very well. They need to shore up their offensive line, and they can in this draft. The choice is between Russell Okung and Bryan Bulaga. The safer pick is Okung and that gives them some flexibility. They've got to go with the tackle to protect the quarterback. Cassel is not the most mobile guy, so they've got to keep him upright."
*Legion*: Eric Berry, S, Tennessee

6. Seahawks - Eric Berry, S, Tennessee
Charles Davis: "Seattle, with two first-round picks, would love to come out of it with a running back and a left tackle, and a safety wouldn't be bad, either. I'm going with Eric Berry. He'll go with Jordan Babineaux and make an impact. C.J. Spiller would be my next pick. In my mind, Bryan Bulaga is a step below the elite guys, athletically. Would I be getting a true left tackle, or a guy that has to move to right tackle or guard? At this spot, I would have to be convinced I found my left tackle for the next 10 years."
*Legion*: Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa

7. Browns - Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State
Marshall Faulk: "I already think they want to move back. I don't like Clausen at 7, I can probably ride with Jake Delhomme. I really get to evaluate my talent with the veteran quarterback. At running back, we have a young kid, Jerome Harrison, who really showed potential, showed he can carry the load. I like a receiver here, a guy who can really provide a nice target for the deep ball, so you don't have to get a lot of yards to score, I'm going with Dez Byrant."
*Legion*: Joe Haden, CB, Florida

8. Raiders - Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida
Brian Billick: "Everyone says Bruce Campbell, because of his athleticism and measurables, makes sense here. And why take a player at 39 that I can take at No. 8? But I'm going to help them here a little bit. The way the board has fallen, I could also see Joe Haden and C.J. Spiller here, as well as Bulaga. But I tell you what, because we talked about the freakish athlete in Campbell, if the coaches and the scouts won't let Al Davis take him, then I'll take Jason Pierre-Paul, because I can't pass up another freakish athlete."
*Legion*: Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, South Florida

9. Bills - Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame
Michael Irvin: "With Chan Gailey as the head coach and understanding the system he runs -- not liking the system, but understanding the system -- I would go with the quarterback, Jimmy Clausen."
*Legion*: Jimmy Clausen, QB, Notre Dame

10. Jaguars - Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech
Rich Eisen: "If I'm the Jaguars, I am now disappointed that Jason Pierre-Paul is off the board, and I'm a little surprised Spiller is still there. I know my offense did not put up many points last season. Maurice Jones-Drew is fabulous and a Pro Bowler, but I wonder about the wear on him at his size. Plus, I'm sitting here knowing I need to put fans in the seats. Spiller has played in the region. But Jack Del Rio is a defensive-minded coach, so I have to go with Derrick Morgan. I have to go with him, as much as I want the sexy pick."
*Legion*: Rolando McClain, LB, Alabama

11. Broncos - Rolando McClain, LB, Alabama
Steve Mariucci: "It's too early for Demaryius Thomas. I'm going to make my defense better. We were 26th against the rush last year. I'm going to take Rolando McClain from Nick Saban University. I gotta have him."
*Legion*: Dez Bryant, WR, Oklahoma State

12. Dolphins - Sergio Kindle, DE, Texas
Charles Davis: "The Dolphins need defense at every level. They need it at defensive line, especially on the interior, at inside linebackers, plus outside linebacker. And they need a safety because they didn't tackle well last year. At No. 12, I'm going to go with Sergio Kindle."
*Legion*: Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee

13. 49ers - Bryan Bulaga, OT, Iowa
Marshall Faulk: "We have our left tackle with Joe Staley. Tony Pashos is gone, so we have to take our right tackle, who they say is the second-best left tackle on the board, Bryan Bulaga."
*Legion*: Trent Williams, OT, Oklahoma

14. Seahawks - Joe Haden, CB, Florida
Brian Billick: "The guys I'm looking at, we have a lot of needs. I would like Bulaga here. I like Anthony Davis, but he's probably a bit of a project. I can't believe we're sitting here and all of these guys have gone off the board before the first cornerback. Even though we picked a safety earlier, I'm going to go with tradition and take Joe Haden here."
*Legion*: Derrick Morgan, DE, Georgia Tech

15. Giants - C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson
Michael Irvin: "I want to give Eli Manning somebody he can dump the ball off to and make things happen. After watching what Brian Westbrook did for years, I want one of those guys. They go and pick Spiller and let him do what he does. Then bring in Brandon Jacobs when everyone is tired. He's a finisher, not a starter. You let everyone get tired and then bring in Jacobs."
*Legion*: C.J. Spiller, RB, Clemson.

16. Titans - Dan Williams, DT, Tennessee
Rich Eisen: "I'm disappointed at this spot. With Spiller dropping, I have a lot of calls for trades. But I'm going to go out on a limb. I bet Mike Heimerdinger is pounding the table for a wide receiver here. Listen, I've got every coach's dream running back there in Chris Johnson, and I have Vince Young back there. I know I have Kenny Britt, too. If I'm Heimerdinger, I want a receiver. That's just what's going on in my mock draft room. I'm going to go Dan Williams here."
*Legion*: Everson Griffen, DE, USC

17. 49ers - Earl Thomas, S, Texas
Steve Mariucci: "We need a corner, we need a safety, we need a pass rusher. Sergio Kindle is gone, so now I've got two DBs in mind. I'm talking about a corner with Kyle Wilson. But the highest-rated player on my board is Earl Thomas, because he might be able to play corner in the nickel. He's athletic and can do a lot of things."
*Legion*: Taylor Mays, S, USC

18. Steelers - Kyle Wilson, CB, Boise State
Charles Davis: "The Steelers need help up front to protect ben Roethlisberger when he's ready to play. He does tend to hold the ball, and he gets hit a lot. You have Mike Iupati here, you have Maurkice Pouncey sitting here. But when I watched the Steelers play last year, especially down the stretch, defense was the problem. That's why I'm going with cornerback Kyle Wilson with this pick."
*Legion*: Mike Iupati, OG, Idaho

19. Falcons - Taylor Mays, S, USC
Marshall Faulk: "We're in the divison with the Super Bowl champs. They need to pressure Drew Brees. They have just one guy that can get to the quarterback, John Abraham. The rest of these guys don't look like they can get sacks in the 4-3, and we run the 4-3. Then I look at the back end. They lost one corner, but picked up Dunta Robinson. I like Thomas DeCoud, but not Erik Coleman, so I'm going Taylor Mays."
*Legion*: Brandon Graham, DE, Michigan

20. Texans - Brandon Graham, DE, Michigan
Brian Billick: "If I'm Houston, I'm upset that Kyle Wilson dropped off the board. I would loved to trade this pick. We lost Dunta Robinson, but we have Demeco Ryans and I'd love to have a guy opposite Mario Williams. The offense is pretty set. I look at Brandon Graham, who is a good, solid pass rusher, but maybe not elite. Then there's Sean Weatherspoon, too. But I'll go with Graham."
*Legion*: Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno State

21. Bengals - Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma
Michael Irvin: "I'm going to go get a tight end. I'm taking Jermaine Gresham. I have Antonio Bryant and Chad Ochocinco at receiver. Bryant had a great year a couple years ago in Tampa, fell off last year, now he's looking to prove himself again. I have a great running back, now I'm going to get a tight end, and now you have something there, man."
*Legion*: Brian Price, DT, UCLA

22. Patriots - Jared Odrick, DT, Penn State
Rich Eisen: "I wanted that tight end in the worst way. Do I go Rob Gronkowski here? What does Bill Belichick have to say? I can't trade this pick, which Belichick would do. I wonder what Belichick thinks of Sean Weatherspoon? I'll go with Jared Odrick of Penn State."
*Legion*: Jermaine Gresham, TE, Oklahoma

23. Packers - Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers
Steve Mariucci: "Two corners I really wanted, Wilson and Haden, are gone. I need a tackle. Chad Clifton and Mark Tauscher are old and banged up. I have one of the best quarterbacks in the league, and he got sacked 51 times. Bruce Campbell isn't for me. Mike Iupati, I like him, but I'm going Anthony Davis. Cold-weather guy. He's young and has upside."
*Legion*: Sergio Kindle, LB, Texas

24. Eagles - Maurkice Pouncey, C/G, Florida
Charles Davis: "I was trying to get Earl Thomas here. That hurt. There's a whole bunch of linemen here, and the Eagles need one. They've had injuries, they need help. Cornerback is also a possibility. I'm going to go big to help my quarterback, though, with Marukice Pouncey. I can play him at guard until I'm ready to move him to center."
*Legion*: Earl Thomas, S/CB, Texas

25. Ravens - Patrick Robinson, CB, Florida State
Marshall Faulk: "I'm going corner here. Ladarius Webb came on and got the injury. Domonique Foxworth wasn't as effective as the Ravens had hoped. Fabian Washington is trying not to be a bust. Patrick Robinson is a big, strong guy that can run. I like him. Feet, feet, feet."
*Legion*: Golden Tate, WR, Notre Dame

26. Cardinals - Sean Weatherspoon, LB, Missouri
Brian Billick: "You have a lot of needs here the way the Cardinals are reshuffling. I think the loss of Karlos Dansby hurt, though. You could make a case for Mike Iupati or a receiver, like Demaryius Thomas, here. However, the versatility of Sean Weatherspoon, both inside and outside, is too good to pass up."
*Legion*: Anthony Davis, OT, Rutgers

27. Cowboys - Charles Brown, OT, Southern California
Michael Irvin: "I have to help my tackles. Flozell Adams showed up and played well. We need somebody that will show up and play well. I'm worried about Charles Brown here, especially after only 21 bench presses, but we'll take Charles Brown anyway. I thought about Demaryius Thomas here, because obviously you're stuck with Roy Williams."
*Legion*: Charles Brown, OT, USC

28. Chargers - Ryan Mathews, RB, Fresno State
Steve Mariucci: "The Chargers could be thinking about a corner here after losing Antonio Cromartie, and they could use a nose tackle here, too. I don't like Terrence Cody here, I'm sorry. We need a running back. I worry about Jahvid Best, although I love his speed. I want a guy who can bang a little bit. Mathews can bang."
*Legion*: Terrence Cody, DT, Alabama

29. Jets - Everson Griffen, DE, Southern California
Steve Mariucci: "We added a corner, a running back, and a receiver this offseason. I want to get a guy like Terrell Suggs used to be for the Baltimore Ravens. I have a choice, Everson Griffen or Jerry Hughes. I like Hughes, but you don't see him drop like Griffen does on film, but I still have him rated higher on my board, so I'm taking Griffen."
*Legion*: Jerry Hughes, OLB, TCU

30. Vikings - Kareem Jackson, CB, Alabama
Charles Davis: "We need a cornerback here. Antoine Winfield was hurt last year. Off the board, looking at who is left, there are a couple guys. Devin McCourty is a cover-2 type guy. I'm taking Kareem Jackson."
*Legion*: Devin McCourty, CB, Rutgers

31. Colts - Matt Tennant, C, Boston College
Marshall Faulk: "Bill Polian goes wherever he wants to go, does whatever he wants to do, but he likes guys who are flexible. We lost Ryan Lilja. They like smart guys, Boston College guys. Guys that can play center, guard. I want a smart guy who can get in here and play, so I go Matt Tennant."
*Legion*: Jared Odrick, DT, Penn St

32. Saints - Brian Price, DT, UCLA
Brian Billick: "This has to be a defensive guy. I need an outside pass rusher, but I'm going to take the best defensive guy on my board. That's Brian Price. An inside pass-rush presence, and he's strong. I'm usually UCLA-adverse, but I like this guy."
*Legion*: Carlos Dunlap, DE, Florida

Wait, wait, wait. NFL Network and *Legion* agree on the Raiders draft pick? Obviously they must be really going after some obscure Australian rules football star; no way they could be going after a sensible consensus pick.

You're absolutely right, especially about that one in particular. In some places they were put in for comic relief but in others they're there to "cover up" awkward edits and/or transitions.

Edit: Gaald just tweeted (you see that, Boogle, it's "tweets" not "twitters") me that he spends 4-8 hours in editing which puts my 20 or so to shame (though it was my first time editing audio of that length and number of tracks) but I'm guessing he doesn't have to make... you... sound... like... you... talk... like... a... human.

And it looks like the Saints are completely f*cked.

See, there's the problem. It's not sensible. At all. Pierre-Paul has athleticism, but he's raw and needs . . . good coaching! And he's going to the Raiders! Also, it's not like I look at the Raiders and they scream "we need a defensive end". Now, if they do go 3-4, I can't imagine what could possibly go wrong when they take a guy like JPP who never stood up in college and suddenly ask him to cover Darren Sproles in the flat.

Nice job on the first podcast, guys.

Nice podcast. Even though I despise twitter and have deleted my account, I will 'follow' your tweets via the website. One of the nice things about the early start is that I will still be at work and able to follow along. I will try and post my thoughts on the Seahawks picks here as they're made.

PFT's Top 10 Draft Board. If you can get past the stuttering connection, pay attention to the 8 and 10 spots. If that happens, I'll be laughing all night.

#10? Wait, that's... oh lord....

*clicks link*

LOL. Florio really pays no attention to Jacksonville. I mean, his own website ran the story that the Jaguars have taken that player off their board completely. You gotta wonder how many "character" issues Gene Smith has to purge from the roster and how many he's got to come out and say "no" to before someone paying attention goes, "you know what? The Jags aren't going down that road again for a little while".

I thought you NFL types might enjoy this article on Slate about a legal challenge to the league's draft in 1970.

That was a very unconventional board when compared to everyone else's, which means it'll probably happen. Raiders take Clausen? What?

I'm setting the DVR to record it even though I'll be watching it live. I want to be able to replay whatever insane pick Oakland makes on cue.

Edit: Speak of the devil, Mort reports the Raiders are shopping Darren McFadden around and the Lions are reportedly interested.

I'd like to see McFadden playing with a real offense, which kind of precludes him playing in Detroit. I'd love to see the guy in Tampa (who at least have a decent offensive line). Then again, if the Raiders want a higher pick, it's not really worth it when there are so many holes in Tampa to fill. A third-rounder plus maybe a fifth? Sure, I'd go for that.

Everyday I am thankful that I am not a raiders fan.
