Frozen Synapse "The Ultimate Tactical Game" from Mode 7

Pages

Pretty tantalizing looking trailer for a turn-based tactical game from Mode 7. A bit like the battlescape fights from X-Com, but quite different, too. You plan your moves, and test them out before committing to them. You can also attempt to predict the opponents moves, which I assume would give you a bonus of some kind.

Could be a good sleeper hit this year.

Found on the IndieGames blog.

UPDATE:

Google Doc with the list of players and their servers.

I am always up for more turn-based tactical games. This looks kind of like the game I always wished that Rainbow Six was.

I saw this on RPS yesterday and I was impressed by the trailer. Also from RPS, the comments mentioned the devs have a good podcast, Visiting the Village. I'll be d/l that soon.

I could definitely get into a good tactics game. I'll have to keep my eye on this.

Looks super cool, totally interested in playing this. Thanks for the find

This is the kind of game I wish Rainbow Six would go back to, honestly. The planning screen of the first few games was arguably my most favorite part of the game.

Very neat. Checked out the developers website and liked what I saw aesthetically.

Looks really similar to Laser Squad Nemesis to me, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It will be interesting to see what kind of unit variety will be available for creating/managing your team.

Those interested in the game will be able to get in the beta if they pre-order. Pre-order details coming soon.

Sweet, glad they're still making progress on this one.

Would be awesome and hilarious if they put an IQ score in the system requirements.

Looks intriguing, hopefully more details forthcoming!

I love their podcast.

Just got an email, basically pre-orders are gonna go live on the 19th and with every pre-order you'll get a free copy to give to a friend. The pricing will be announced on the day they go live (they apologize for the suspense), there will be a tutorial to start us off etc.

Here's the feature-list for the current beta...

CURRENT BETA STATUS (12/04/2010)...
# Multiplayer: all modes (Hostage, Secure, Disputed, Extermination) are gameplay-complete and functional
# Single player: Puzzle and Skirmish are functional; Campaign is not included
# Community features: Feed, rating and comments, basic rankings and Instant Matchmaking are available
# YouTube export is functional
# UI has been through one intensive testing phase and is fully functional
# Audio is functional but basic
# Facebook and Twitter integration are not included
# A basic interactive tutorial and tutorial video ARE included
# In-game IRC chat!

Even better - you get beta access for pre-ordering, but the friend you give the game to will also get immediate beta access. There will be bundles too.

The pre-order bonus is ingenious: not only does it actually guarantee that you'll have at least one person out there to play with you, but it also helps spread the word and build up the community around the game.

With any luck, they'll keep this "feature" untouched all the way to the final release.

Hoping for $10, or a gifted copy.

Same here. If it's $10 or 10 EURO - it's an instant purchase. Anything more and it will have to wait, I'm afraid. Pathetic, I know, but that's life.

$26 or £16.99 I think they have priced high - although you get a copy for a friend on release as well

Interesting, looks like a whole game based around the planning phase of old school Rainbow Six.

This sounds like the sort of thing I'd love. ESPECIALLY If I can name my grunts after Goodjers

Definately going to be keeping an eye on this. Anyone put any time into the beta yet?

Yeah, so 19EURO is a bit pricey for me right now unfortunately. Especially since I wanted to buy Plain Sight as well. I think that the price will be worth the content (and you get a free copy too). I'll try and get it next month, hopefully it won't be out until then, I want to give a copy to someone.

Just saw that thy are targeting the release date in "late 2010" so I'm good. Definitely picking it up, even though I know I'm not smart enough to play this competitively.

I hadn't been paying attention so had not realised with this game you didn't need to be online for the whole game. i.e more a pbem concept with the hosting on the web. Purchased Not sure what the NDA allows but will post as soon as I know more.

$26 is too steep for me to make an impulse buy, but $13 is not. If someone wants to split the pre-order and the free copy with me let me know.

I'd very much be in on a deal like that. Just not sure how it will work out since I'm in the EU etc. Don't know if it matters to the game.

Asked them on their FB page and the guy said that you can give the key to whoever and wherever you want. Doesn't matter. Just as a tip to anyone else who's thinking about this.

Damn, this game sounds awesome.

It doesn't matter their is no region with this game so either you can give the key away or go 50:50. Basically the player who buys creates the game account for the second player.

Played a bit tonight, planning stage is very good. In the planning stage as well as organising your own squad you can 'predict' your opponent by moving his troops and seeing what the outcome is. Tidily done - being a former LSN player the planning in this imho is a lot better. Game is very much early beta with various issues but it is at the same time probably more complete than I was expecting. As games are hosted on the server you can move between machines whilst playing a game.

Any questions fire away

Thanks for the synopsis. So all multiplayer games are dependent on their servers? Not to be negative, but I hate the idea of the future playability requiring that a small, indy developer survive the test of time.

I know the single-player campaign is not included, but how are the other SP modes?

Thanks

I need to play the ai more - so far i've played 99% against MP and 1% against AI. As far as I can see and i'll test properly tonight you have the same game modes against the AI as you do against MP - although not sure if you have the ability to save a game like this - MP it saves on the server, I don't think this is true for SP. I don't think you can but I will again check tonight. AI is comp[etent at this stage but with this type of game I like the randomness a human gives as opposed to the logic against ai - seems more tense when playing against another but that is very much imho

Yes MP games are stored on the server - you can play against the AI offline where it doesn't require network access but for MP it's all on a server - no server no MP.

Hands-on from Eurogamer
They've said (in the DRM article) that their servers will "never go down". I guess they've got enough of a success with their previous games in order to maintain a few servers running, it's not like they are going to host IWnet or anything.

Heh. Got challenged by somebody while still in the tutorial. Decided to go for it once I finished the tutorial. Killed in the first round (I did take one of his guys out, but just one.) Yikes.
