Beat Hazard: A Shooter Powered By YOUR Music

I'm spamming everyone in this thread for friending up, anyone else has the game, feel free to add me as well.

I'm really feeling the need for a controller right now.

Okay, I've been playing a bit. Some thoughts:

1) A controller is absolutely mandatory. I can't imagine playing this without one.
2) This, on a huge screen with awesome speakers, could perhaps single-handedly bring back the video game arcade.
3) It really, really sucks that photosensitive folks can't play it. There's just no way it could work.
4) 'Disappoint' by Assemblage 23 is awesome: "Do you believe in the nobility of suicide?" "No." Beat starts.... Awesome!

Master Exploder, by Tenacious D.

'nuff said.

Yes and Yes. 53" Plasma with Surround. At night, my eyes go loopy.
It's great for parties. People get to play a games, listen to music and have party lighting.

Just got this, it's really interesting despite the constant crashing. Enjoying it so far!

I really like the Dare Devil idea, it stops you from shooting during those quiet moments, and makes you unleash during the loud bits, helps to heighten those crescendos! My only real complaint (despite those crashes) is that for all the very pretty effects, the ships sure do look pretty ugly.

Man, I don't know how, but I have not had a SINGLE crash. My MP3s are ripped by Zune at 192k. Maybe we can try to find out why you guys are crashing and I'm not(on my laptop, no less)?

Run to the Hills - Iron Maiden (best of luck to you)

Ooh, I just found my Live After Death CD while going through the drawers for more material. I wonder how Aces High is...

I'm in. Add me to your friend's list if you haven't already. This is exactly the sort of mindless fun I've been looking for.

Link your profile or click my link in my sig.

Get out the Zeppelin. Song Remains the Same is fun. Over the Hills is brutal. Gallow's Pole has not been attempted yet.

Really want to find my Gary Hoey and Joe Satriani, as well as the Steve Vai I have that is the wrong format.

OH! Journey is surprisingly fun. Seriously. Someone get Elysium in here.

In addition to my "Steve Vai - The Audience is Listening" can you survive it challenge above, Black Water by the Doobie Brothers. Ouch. So fun.

This game may single-handedly get me over the hump in Dwarf Fortress. Losing *really* is fun!

Angel of Death by Slayer is brutal. I haven't been able to get past 40%, even on normal.

I have some Steve Vai, I'll try that. I did Satch Boogie last night, that was a hoot.

Also:

Smokin' - Boston

Rock 'n Roll Band - Boston

Train Kept 'a Rollin' - Aerosmith

Beat the ZoSo album. Well, almost. 97% on Stairway....and I don't have the fortitude to try it again, anytime soon.

Pheew, Resistance by Muse is tough on Survival, the second track which the album is named for, Resistance, starts off very quiet for about 30 seconds, so you best have mopped up in the first track, Uprising. I've also discovered that a British band called Enter Shikari are made for this game, if you don't mind a bit of hardcore/electronic music.

Friend me up if you want to compare scores!

Yes I bought. Played some Thrice and the first Pendulum album. Very fun gameplay, surprisingly addictive. I hate all the tearing though, forcing V-Sync is a must for me.

And yeah, sometimes it just gets ridiculous to try and see what's going on.

Combichrist. Especially 'Intruder Alert'. It's almost not fair to the little enemy ships how much crap you can put out on the screen with those songs.

We should make some sort of list of peoples favorite music to play. Of course, I elect I not do it.

Yeah, that would be my problem.

I just wish they would patch in multiple compatibility soon for the audio files. I really don't have the patience to convert M4A files into MP3's.

I'm just reripping stuff I want, like most of my Zeppelin is in the wrong format. And the Vai album I really want to try(Sex & Religion) has some insane fast, loud, pulsing tracks. Passion & Warfare still rocks, but I really want to try stuff like Little Black Hole. /giggle

I cannot express just how fun this thing is.

Well Insane certainly seems to be the way to get big scores, if you can get through an Insane track without getting toasted...

In case you hadn't noticed it does appear that playing through on Survival is like playing on Hardcore ... forever.

I only get crashes when selecting folders. It just hangs. I can't make heads or tails of it because it just seems to do it randomly.

I was thinking the whole cd Reign in Blood would be a beast to play, based on comments regarding other songs. Ok, I'm in - downloading.

Thats exactly what I'm running into. I have a huge music collection but can't "play" most of it. I wonder how hard it would be to patch that into the game?

Someone should have this guy talk with the Audiosurf folks, since Audiosurf can play my M4A files, and thus I don't have to jump through hoops to get my music into the game.

Request it over at the ColdBeam forums. The creator seems pretty involved in getting patches and updates out.

Hmm I'm probably going to have to get this on PC as well.

So has anyone figured out how the game determines when to send out a boss ship? I've got several songs that generate one or even two about 15-20 seconds into the song and I'm so underpowered that I can never catch up. I spend so much time dealing with the homing missiles that I can't even do any damage to the ship itself.

The author seems proud of the "each song generates the same level each time" idea, but for me this means certain songs are forever unplayable.

Other than that a very fun game, but I can see it getting repetitive.

As skeletonframes mentioned, the dev is still actively developing this game. He's already said he's adding OGG, FLAC and AAC into the game, so I would think others will be making it too. He's also looking to add two player local coop back in.

Oh, and there will be a demo.

And pro tip: You can fly into/over the bosses without dying by collision. Their bullets still kill you, clearly, but you can grab powerups that are floating on top of the boss.

I always thought the hit detection was dodgy around bosses, but apparently that's because there is no actual collision involved.

yep....I hate every1 here now....cause you made me buy it and can't stop playing it. feel free to add me as a friend. steam is in the sig

I wish I had more arena and 80s rock - Scorpions, Bon Jovi, Poison, KISS, Cinderella, Motley Crue, etc. I bet that's fun. I wonder where my Bon Jovi is...

Damnit! Now I have to go and get the 360 version of this game!

Can't wait to try Spiral Architect, Liquid Tension Exp., maybe some Death... Arsis' Maddening Disdain and anything by The Haunted should be killer. Anybody up for some of Henry Rollins' spoken word records? lol

Will be back to posting once I've acquired it.

No, no you won't. You'll be doing what all of us are doing: playing obsessively.

Hell, I'm only posting now because I have to leave shortly to go pick up my girlfriend from the airport!

It is, but besides Angel of Death and Raining Blood, which are both nearly 5 minutes, the rest of songs are under 3 minutes. In other words, it's a lot easier to survive a super intense game for 2.5 minutes than almost 5.

Got both versions now, ready to piss me off, and to think, it only cost, what, $12?

On the plus side, I can zap enemies while grooving to the GWJ podcast and Prairie Home Companion. There's nothing like powering up to the sonorous voice of Garrison Keillor.
