GWJ Ventrilo Server FAQ

Sounds like it's time to change the password.

Are we still having capacity issues? I kind of assumed (with absolutely no basis ) that having all the Battlefield players on other Vent servers had relieved a good deal of the problem.

I haven't noticed capacity issues while I'm online.

The couple of times a week I use the server, I've never seen any problems.

I've added a few named accounts per request for the the whole "reserved" issue and just loaded the General User or whatever it is profile.

Right. So I finally figured out about those templates, hopefully without causing any issues while learning. The only deficiency I noticed was that the Generic User template doesn't check the "reserved user" (or whatever that's called) checkbox. I've also been giving admin rights to create, move and kick users to some of the long time goodjers.

So did the password change? I can't seem to get on.

Also, is the BC2 vent server gone now? I can't even ping it

Regular works for me, can't connect to Wired's BFBC2 Server.

It doesn't exist anymore. See this thread for details on the BC2 Vent server and the 2 BC2 game servers: http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/node/3...

EDIT: As far as the GWJ Vent server that this thread is about, passwords haven't changed. The most typical cause of someone being unable to log on is that they have a specific account, and forgot that, or forgot their individual password for that account. But I didn't see a DrJonez username when I checked just now.

I haven't had any connection issues.

Also, can an admin please add more rooms under Starcraft Heathens? We've got a lot more beta people and it's 2v2 max right now.

Channelized.

Can we have a channel added for Bloodline Champions (and maybe a couple subchannels). We can probably remove the Demigod channels now as nobody plays it anymore.

It also might be easier to give me admin rights so I can create these channels instead of asking all the time. I use the vent server a lot. Other admins (Gaald, Multra and MoonDragon) can vouch for me. I already have a user on the vent server with some priviledges.

Done.

A note to other admins: Please don't put game channels underneath the publisher/dev's name. It makes it hard to find the game (I didn't know Demigod wasn't going to be under "D"; I thought at first it was already deleted) and makes the list vertically longer than it needs to be. It's easiest to just have games alphabetically.

I may go in and fix the ones that are like that in the near future.

Speaking of games no one plays anymore, if anyone sees any games that they know aren't played anymore, please let us know. I suspect that no one is playing Operation Flashpoint, for example, but I would hate to rain on anyone's parade.

This is a good tip for those fed up with having to keep raising or lowering volume for each person

Bah, I lost my password (or rather, it's saved in Vent but I forgot what it is). Anyone know if I can just copy the program data to a new computer and have it work? If not, who is handling password resets?

User Editor doesn't indicate that you have a personal account; is it under a weird name?

If you don't, then you should just use the generic password in the OP.

Oh, I'm probably using the generic password, I don't see any other account info in my settings.

I'm not sure if that means your problem is resolved, so I'll assume it is unless I hear otherwise...?

Can an Alien Swarm channel (and sub game channels?) be added for the release of the game and the initial huge surge or people looking to get into groups for it?

Won't it have the usual built-in voice chat?

I added an Alien Swarm channel. I don't want to add a bunch of sub-channels, though, unless we're sure we need them. The server has so many channels that it's a bit cluttered, imho. If Alien Swarm really needs a bunch of channels, then folks can just hijack an empty room for the evening and post here asking for more.

Speaking of which, has the League of Legends craze died down yet? Do they still need a zillion channels?

I can't speak to confidently on this since I haven't been getting in as often as I would like to play LoL. Season One just started so there may be some folks coming back, but I bet you might be able to remove 1 or 2 channels and be ok. If need be we'll just take another empty channel for the night.

LoL now has the root channel and 2 sub-channels. Thanks for answering!

That may be too few... but we'll manage and have a couple admins so if necessary they can make another one as needed.

Did that just happen?

How are we doing on funding for the server? Is it time for another donation round yet?

I also wonder if some of the channels can be removed or reduced...

IL2?
DDO?
Lead & Gold?
Alien Swarm?
Arma II?
Burnout?
Red Faction?
Shattered Horizon
Bloodline Champs? Does it need two sub channels?
Unreal Tourny?
Does Sins need the Stardock header when Elimental is not in there with it? Does it still need 3 channels?
CoH?
Warhammer?
Operation Flashpoint?
Mount & Blade?
LOTRO?
L4D?

I am not saying these have to go but just listing some that I haven't seen much action in lately. I would also not be opposed to creating a couple miscellaneous channels to account for these smaller games and folks can just put what they are playing in a comment.

I am just thinking it would be nice to have a shorter list of empty rooms...

I would leave bloodline champions there (maybe keep one subchannel). The game isn't out yet but I expect more action when it releases.

Don't touch the Sins channels, they might not get much use yet but I expect that we will be starting up the saturday Sins again at some point.

These are good questions.

When I think about it I think it is nice to have channels so you can at a glance see what people are playing (provided they are in the right channels) But it can also be annoying to have to scroll through a bunch of empty channels in vent.

There is defiantly value to having channels for the established and active communities like WoW, LoL, SC2, etc. I also see the value for the less active but still kickin' communities like DOW2, MTG, Boardgames, GWJRPG, etc that need their channels. But the others (and this is where community communication and admin participation counts) need to be monitored and removed when participation drops.

I also think a catch-all channel with a couple sub channels could also make it so we don't have to make channels for every little new game that comes out. It would be good for people to identify what games they were playing with a comment but not totally necessary. Then when a game seems to be reaching a critical mass one of the admins could then make a channel for it. The less channels that are made the less that need to be cleaned up but then also the less clear it would be what people are playing if they don't make a comment in vent. So trade offs.

Well, it looks like you can't move channels. I was hoping to make a "Pending deletion" channel then we could start moving suspected dead channels to that and see if there were any complaints. I'm going to throw out a list of channels for a first round clean up pass.

Arma II
Borderlands -> Team 1 (meaning delete the sub-channel)
DDO: Unlimited
GWJRPG
IL2
Lead & Gold
Monster Hunter
Operation Flashpoint
Red Faction: Guerrilla
Rise of Nations -> Two if not all three sub-channels
Stardock -> SoaSE -> Two if not all three sub-channels (And I don't personally think we should put games as a sub of the dev/publisher)
Unreal Tournament

Comments? I'll wait until the weekend and if there is no dissention I'll go ahead and nuke those or whatever cull list we narrow down to by then.

Do the GWJRPGers no longer meet? That's the only one of those that seems to me like it might be missed.
