I know there's a ton of threads around here about space type games, and I've ready many/most of them. I haven't found what I'm looking for though and hope someone can make a recommendation. I'm looking for a space based game, sort of like a 4x game, but focusing mostly on the expansion/research/building side of things and less on the conflict side. Ideally something that has some persistence to it, but that's likely a tall order.
By way of example, I've been playing OGame lately. It's been perfect for what I've been looking for as the world is persistent and I could focus on mining/building/researching. Unfortunately I've run up against what I consider a design flaw in the game, in that some high ranked players with a certain type of setup are able to completely freeze a mid-lower ranked players progress through use of unavoidable and effectively undefeatable attacks. That adds a level of frustration that removes the fun from the game IMO.
I've also played Gal Civ and enjoy it, but am looking for something with more building and expansion and less focus on the conflict against the AI enemy. I'm in the midst of the demo for Sins, but it also seems more based on the conflict side of things so far as I can tell.
