GWJ Ventrilo Server FAQ

One suggestion for future registrants (and one that I didn't adhere to, hypocritically - I'm raising my hand and calling my own foul here):

Please register using the exact same handle that you use here on GWJ. This will be the least confusing for all, I think.

True dat!

Hey guys, I like the idea of all tagged Goodjers being given rights to add users, as they do have a vested interest in the community. The Ventrilo software also keeps track of who is the 'Owner' of new users, so it's very easy to track trouble makers, and those who added troublemakers to the list. If you add someone to the registered user list, your name is attached to theirs.

Here's a list of the current Registered Users"

--List removed because it is long...--

I'm not sure how many of these folks are Admins, but I would encourage all of the admins to work on registering as many Goodjers as possible. I've checked the 'In reserved list' box on the network tab of all these users, so that's where they'll boot a Guest account if the server is full.

Can you give admin rights to these guys, or list the current admins so we can know who to request to register with, or should there be a thread created where people can request to be added, or if there is another process (PM, etc) have the original post updated to explain it?

The next step is to go to the 75 or 100 user server, which wouldn't be a problem either, if full servers continue to be a problem. It's good to see activity levels this high though, having to go to a bigger server indicates good gaming community!

I love that there is almost always a least a couple people in vent to play LoL with!

I second that notion then the conversations can flow from forums right to vent and back again.

I'm an admin (and I play one on vent!) so I'll volunteer to help with the task of creating named accounts. I don't think there's a provision for users to change their own password, so PM me for an account and what password you want, obviously don't send me your "life password". If you don't send me a password you're likely to see just how imaginative I can be with my real users who forget passwords and require a reset. Without being able to change it you may spend the rest of your Vent lifetime with the password "iLust4Liquidmantis".

What about requiring a minimum donation (maybe $5?) for all new users who want an account?

I'm not the only one who does this!

I think that defeats the purpose of kicking guests for registrants. I don't have a problem with giving a higher rank for a donation, though. I'm not sure what the software supports, though.

I wasn't really thinking of the guests, I am more concerned with the slots on the server, it could still fill up with registered users.

Now would be a good time to ask for donations to increase the capacity of the server in my opinion. If it could go to at least 75 slots, kicking guests off probably wouldn't be an issue. An account could be looked at like a perk, just like we get the icons for donating to GWJ every year.

Well like I said, I have no problem with having multiple ranks, where the lower ranks get kicked in favor of the higher. Donors > Registrants > Guests. Mind you, I have zero idea whether Vent supports that, or whether TheWalt does.

There's a preferential setting, "In reserved list", that when checked means if needed you will boot non-flagged people. But that's just a two-tier hierarchy.

My understanding is that all the admins on the server can add new users up to the same admin powers as themselves, and it does keep track of who added who, so it's pretty easy to fix a breach in the system if something like that were to occur. So start registering people up!

On the utilization side, are there any GWJ coders out there who could write a script that tracks server utilization (there are both html and image locations that post current information, I don't think that info gets logged tho). Just trying to get some info around how often we're hitting the 50 player ceiling to determine when or if we should go to 75.

Am I registered? I thought I was registered. How do I register?

Taken care of... see your inbox for details.

i could help you solve the immediate problem of users with a 100 or 200 slot server, i play world of warcraft now so i'll be using some slots for my own guild as long as i can get forwarded donations to keep it running.

give me a general idea of where you would want the hosting from or i'll try backtrack a few posts to find a company name.

400 slots for $100 a month if your comfortable with their hosting.

I don't know but this seems excessive... My guess is we may need a 75 slot server. But I also agree that we should watch how full it gets before we waste donations on going to 75 if it is unnecessary.

Has anyone actually seen the server fill up?

Have the Ventrilo capacity issues not abated at all now that all the Battlefield BC2 players are on a dedicated Vent server?

I think this has slowed down vent some for now. Lets keep an eye on it over time and see.

Hi everyone. I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right place. I've flipped through this thread a bit to try to get a handle on the situation, but I'm still a bit confused. Feel free to tell me to take a hike if I'm in the wrong place.

Last night, I was on (what I thought) was the GWJ Ventrilo server, playing BC2 with some friends. DrJonez hooked me up with the connection information. We were all kicked from the server and banned. No one popped their head in to ask who we were or anything like that (that I know of - things were exploding in the game.) We just got disconnected and banned. I'm not complaining - I'm brand new and no one knows me. I just want the opportunity to explain myself.

Is there something that I need to do, someone I need to contact, to register for the server and identify myself as a friendly presence? Or is the server in question not actually the server being discussed in this thread?

Thanks for the help, regardless.

The BC2 server is run by Wired (WiredAsylum on the forums I believe). When he rented a server for the BC2 games it came with a vent server. Were you kicked form the vent server or the BC2 server? If you were kicked from the BC2 server it usually happens because we were trying to make room for a GWJer on the server and the person doing the kicking didn't know you were a GWJer. Just put your clan name as GWJ and nobody will kick you from the game server (unless your hacking ).

Is the GWJ vent server working for anyone else? I can't seem to connect and it's been this way since around noon EST when I first tried. It was fine late last night.

Just gave it a reboot and it's back up now.

No, you can stay on the Ventrilo Server if you hack, we're considering alternative methods to dissuade the use of hacks.

Okay, I had placed a note on the Bad Company 2 channel letting people know that TheWalt's GWJ Vent server was the wrong Vent server for BC2, but someone deleted that channel (which I can understand, since I often think we should clean up unused channels).

However, this has led to confusion on the part of at least one person recently, who apparently logged on and hung out in the general Battlefield channel and wondered where everyone was.

So, I recreated the BC2 channel, along with a note letting people know that it's the wrong Vent server. Please no one delete it unless it is absolutely necessary and/or your name is TheWalt.

Thanks!

Got some goons on the server right now, Neil, and Kailaa and NKrader. Said they found the site and pass on google.

Makes perfect sense. The post has been up a while. GWJ.com gets indexed by Google often. This thread has also been regularly active. All the ingredients for getting a fairly high search score on Google.

TheWalt, if you could find a bit of time to think about how you'd like new users registered. I just looked through the User Editor on Vent and there were some inconsistencies. Anybody that you made a registered user, you also made an admin. There are primarily two other admins that have been registering people and they both used different options (from each other and from you). Perhaps a unified policy is in place. A checklist on how to make a new user and what options to check, uncheck, and not check. That way we can ensure that there are no foul-ups by us that are not so experienced with Vent administration.

--Edit--

Also, what's the policy on freeloaders? Do we kick them whenever we encounter them? Do we ignore them until they are an issue?

Had to ban a couple of guys today for rude behavior. When questioned how they got the vent I was told to F off by one of then. I did noticed that Gaald had already banned one of them before (username = "Urucheee") Please keep an eye out.

I've added a few named accounts per request for the the whole "reserved" issue and just loaded the General User or whatever it is profile. My brother and I did meet someone last night that said he found the server via a Google search. He was polite though and didn't hang around too long.
