The Witcher 2 Catch-All

I really like those books and that world.

I really hate PC games.

Sad me.

Did one of the developers children write that? I give it a C.

My computer being sh*tty, I was really looking forward to the console port of the first one. Alas.

How can you hate PC games?

1. I have a really hard time getting them to work properly.

2. Even when I've upgraded PCs in the past, performance never seems to be where it should (the original Witcher is actually a good example of this).

3. Once I do get them working properly, I tend not to play them anyway. My Steam games beaten to owned ratio is 1:28 or something. The one was Portal. I was raised on consoles and that's what I'm comfortable with.

4. I have a really hard time getting them to work properly

So basically, it's me, not them.

I believe The Witcher's engine is to blame in this case.

Well, if you ever want to get into PC gaming the tech forum will give you lots of help getting stuff to work.

Well, just reinstalled The Witcher again last night (going to try with the Polish voices this time around).
I'll get through it all the way this time if it kills me.

Was pleasantly suprised to find that my recent PC upgrade now runs it at a fair blistering pace at max detail, which is nice.

I dunno. The misogyny was so extreme in the first one. Sometime in a swamp area, I just finally shuddered and gave up. I don't remember what the specific issue was anymore, but maybe it was the collectible cards for women you'd diddled that finally convinced me to uninstall.

Guess that means you didn't install the Director's Cut, huh?

That highlights the way CDPR approached their RPG, where it's most common in RPGs for your character to be your avatar, to represent you, in The Witcher you are playing Geralt, a character that already exists and has his own actions. Although sex is undeniably in the game, I'm struggling to think of one off the top of my head one that's compulsory to progress, I'd say it's there as a background element to set the tone of the game and the character, but isn't core to the game.

If anything I think that given CDPR wanted sex in their game, they did it to the right amount as well. Very few of the encounters are significant enough to get a short cut scene, most are just a card and a bit of audio, which just signifies "this happened", and the game moves on.

Lookin' a little less sickly there, Geralt.

I'm slowly working my way through The Witcher; just finished the swamp area with the tower (Chapter 2, I think?). Hopefully I'll finish in time for this to come out. Looking forward to it~

The bullet point of state-of-the-art visuals is getting a little worn out, I think. But it does look good.

Spoiler:

Pretty sure the Triss v. Shani stuff is compulsory since it revolves around who gets Alvin.

To be fair. This one got under my skin for a bit:

Spoiler:

The part where you have to get Dandelion's lute back. Unless I missed something, there's no way through that without beating up the father of the girl he was banging. And she comes on to you directly afterwards.

A W2 cut scene, parts of which were in the trailer: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xco...

Go, go, go Polish devs!
Sinatar, are you going to rename it to Catch-All later or can I make one when we're done talking about trailer?

Wow, I'd really like to hear more about your experience and feeling about the series.

I'm pretty used to RPG fans complaining about not being able to talk your wait out of combat, but this is something new ;]
And like it's been noted a thousand time: erotic themes aren't something limited to video game rendition of Witcher.

I hope they include the option for Polish dialogue with English subtitles. It made the previous game a really interesting, foreign-film experience.

I think they will, from what I've heard they've noticed that many people were playing that way.

HOT! I so want this game! I hope they don't mess it up by trying to port it to the consoles.

They've been hiring people with experience in 360 dev ever since first one came out.

Few snippets of info I've found somewhere else in Polish (this probably coming from one of devs):

# Game takes place right after first one. Plot is divided into chapters.
# Mini-games are still in there, QTEs (in combat) too.
# Vast improvements in design of enviroment - most detailed environments in cRPG ever, probably bigger interactivity with it (ability to wander on roofs)
# More NPC models
# Havok (we've seen that already in 'leaked' alpha vid last year)
# No loading screens when entering buildings.

I'll let you know if I find something more.

This, to me, is the most important piece of information. I would dread entering buildings.

Yeah, I think that at this point they're almost religious about it: in Witcher the loading times were real dross and they've put a lot of energy to fix that in post-release patches. It probably had to do with engine which wasn't designed to load so much data during transitions. When they've started building their own technology for second game I can imagine that it was critical feature for them to get rid of loading screens.

Interesting. Would definitely buy it if it does get ported to 360. Don't see why not, really, judging by the first game; it would have been simple enough to port it without having to revamp the whole thing.

They are getting rid of the collectable cards in the sequel. From Gamespot (link: http://www.gamespot.com/pc/rpg/thewitcher2/news.html?sid=6254071&tag=topslot%3Bthumb%3B2&mode=previews&page=1

This scene set up the game's overhauled romance gameplay, which will be completely different from that of the previous game. In fact, the previous game's romance system, which rewarded you with collectible girlie cards for every woman you came to know intimately, has been scrapped. Instead, throughout The Witcher 2, Geralt can pursue relationships with various female characters through dialogue options and the occasional gift to unlock an ongoing cinematic sequence. In this case, with the two adventurers trapped in a buried elven ruin, Triss started a conversation by asking what should be done next--whether the pair should try to escape or wait to be found by their companions. Naturally, Geralt chose the option to wait.

With the extra time on their hands, one thing led to another, which led to Triss making the most unusual use of her magical powers yet--dissolving her clothes into nothing before diving into the pool. Geralt soon followed her into the water, at which point, our demonstration faded to black for reasons we hope are obvious and then faded back in sometime later.

Seems more ME2/DAO-esque to me.

Edit: Can't wait. And for those of you looking to finish the first one, trust me, the ending (whichever one you get) is worth it.

There is nothing short of this being Wii Exclusive that would keep me from paying an ungodly sum for a stupid collector edition. A Witcher Sword letter opener would be appreciated, however.

Also, Woo naked Triss Merigold. I would stand her with Alyx as one of my favorite NPCs.

I just saw this new video with some gameplay, and I can see that some of the context buttons that appear on screen are "X" and "RB", so I guess this is coming out for the 360 as well.

That'd be awesome. Gnawsome even.

Geralt still doesn't strike me in the games as the crazy badass he seems in the books.

An interview: http://games.on.net/article/10516/De...

Do we have a catch all for this yet? There's the E3 thread by Certis, and a few for TW1

Mmmmm. The Witcher 2.

We now have a catch-all.

I have such high hopes for second one that I'm actually trying to avoid all videos, screenshots, previews and interviews to enjoy the game itself more.

Just tell me it looks good.

Having played the first one, I don't thing they've spoiled anything much with the second. They're mostly talking about things they've changed, such as taking inspiration from Batman:AA for the combat, or the dialogue system, but not giving in depth examples.

Good doesn't do it justice.

I played the first game right up to the end. Then played it again a second time immediately. Loved it to bits. Can't wait for the second one (and for the next translated novel...)
