JRPG Catch-All

That boy is a woman, actually. Here she is in another of the screenshots:

Something about this is just plain wrong.

Especially when I thought she was a molested little boy earlier...

Yeah, a bit of a jarring juxtaposition there.

You would have been one surprised Priest, when you went for that alter boy.

If I was a priest, I'd be serenading that hearty-looking nun with the aid of a tiny ukulele.

"What if God was one of us?

Just a stranger on a bus..."

What's weird to me is that they specify in the contest rules that they "won't be able to pick comics with mature language or subject matter as winners" and yet include that image and this one:

This one is less racy, but they're sort of asking for more sexual comics with these selections.

I'm guessing that that rule is just there for their own protection in case something comes up.

First off, Adam, your subtitles made me actually laugh outloud.

I watched those walkthroughs, and I guess I'm still a bit shaky on how the combat works. It looks like when you do a charge, you pick an enemy on the field and target that enemy throughout the charge, accumulating one attack for each time the circle gauge fills up. Is that your impression, as well? My question is: do you automatically aim at the selected enemy, or do you have to aim the reticle yourself? It's much too steady in the videos for me to think they're aiming with thumbsticks, but I don't know for sure.

Okay, I just went through the combat tutorials, so I can answer these questions.

First, in videos the fighting seems very jerky between actions, but when you're actually playing it feels more fluid as you are actually controlling when the actions take place. Also, the longer it takes you to charge an attack the more running/jumping occurs, which doesn't make it seem like you are flipping this way and that. I was actually surprised how much more fluid it seemed when actually playing the game. Pleasantly surprised, I might add.

Before you move, you select an enemy. You use the d-pad for this and all other "aiming". There's no actual aiming, just enemy selection. If you kill the enemy you selected, it does indeed automatically choose another enemy. I'm still not 100% sure, but I believe it's the closest enemy (in this way the game helps you because the closer you are to an enemy, the faster you charge your shot(s)).

Here's the new bit I learned: When you are moving, you can choose a different enemy by pressing right or left on the d-pad.

And for those who are interested, Lobster created a thread for Resonance of Fate.

I'm so stupid. I'm not splitting time between RoF and Infinite Space. Two rather long games. And I passed on ME2 and FFXIII. I guess I'm just craving new, somewhat fringe, experiences.

Just started Infinite Space. Yesss, I think I'm going to enjoy it.

Also anyone getting into Shin Megami Tensei Strange Journey?

Me, me, me! As soon as March 23rd comes! Given it's been several years since the last main series SMT game (Nocturne was it), I kinda figure I feel like the Star Wars fans must have felt when they knew Episode 1 was coming.

I just hope this turns out a heck of a lot better than THAT did.

Yes, but I'm making myself finish games right now, and that means The World Ends With You has got to get beat first. Not that it's a chore, mind you. Great game.

Quick Look for Infinite Space. Rather positive considering Jeff kept dying.

Very yes~ I've got it pre-ordered so it will make its way to me as fast as it can. I've just gotten to the end of Etrian Odyssey II, so it comes at perfect timing.

Long time no see, Mr. SMT.

That's was a funny video! (and good at the same time)

I'm getting into Infinite Space but I keep having the feeling that I missed something. Like when I went up against the first boss and got clobbered again and again. I thought "maybe I should be grinding?" so I wandered back and forth between planets waiting for pirates to appear, which doesn't really happen often enough to make grinding effective. Finally, in desperation, I fought the boss again and decided to just try something different. This kicked off a cutscene and seemed to advance the battle to stage two, and suddenly I was not just beating my head against a wall.

Now I'm in zone two and there's a random encounter battleship that handily destroys me every time I see it. I've visited all the planets, I've hired all the crew, I don't have enough money to buy another ship for my fleet. So what now? Is it grind time? Am I just clueless again? I like the game, but if it continues to be such a maze of objectives, I may just call it quits.

EDIT: Grammar.

Could you give us a rundown on where you are and what your fleet is like? You mention buying another ship, and if you are running a ship or two short then that is probably really crippling you. The only time I went with less than my full complement was when I went from two of those crummy starting destroyers to one cruiser that was a significant power increase. Since then I have always had a full load. In general I also think that having more basic ships is better than one ship fully decked out with modules, just because the extra guns involved are so important. When I traded one fully decked out Bomboradino for two new Pallas ships I saw a marked improvement.

In the early game there were a few times were I felt like I really had to grind to get more money (mainly when I went from 2 to 3 ships) but since then there hasn't been too much grinding. Although I admit that I just hit another wall that I've been having a hard time getting over. My two Pallas's have fairly outmoded modules and I think that I may need to overhaul them. I have 25k or so saved up, but I was hoping on upgrading them to Ianthe's soon so I don't want to soup them up too much more if I can avoid it.

Put in some time with Resonance of Fate. It has most traditional jrpg elements but executes them in non-traditional ways. The battle system is complex enough that there is an arena where you can run the tutorial missions repeatedly. There are towns with a job board and NPC quests. Emo mysterious characters. A plot where everyone knows what's going on but the player. A world map with a unique means of progression. Random encounters. Crafting, customizable weapons and clothing. That's all in the first hour.

My only hangup is the poor execution of subtitles since you only see them during cutscenes. There is no 'exit to main menu' option so you have to reboot the game to change the voiceover language. Seems very last minute and tacked on but they get credit for trying.

Well I've put in around 26 hours now and I finally unlocked my fourth ship, woohoo! The plot thickens too. Stupid work, why aren't you letting me fight spaceships?

Atlus has announced they're "starting work" on Persona 5

http://www.siliconera.com/2010/03/24...

Resonance of Fate is on its way to me now. Thanks to a generous birthday gift from my in-laws, this game, a book, and another game for my wife cost me a grand total of $3. I love it when things work out like that.

Also, thanks, Lard, for the link to Siliconera. I hadn't come across that site before, but it looks like a good resource for upcoming games.

There was a problem with the soundtrack CD bundled in with this game. To replace it, go to Atlus' site (www.atlus.com/strangejourneycd). The instructions from their mailing list are below:

I tried to find a Half Minute Hero thread but could not. Do you know if there is one so that i don't start a new one?

I don't recall seeing one.

I tried last night and it already says out of stock.

I think people are gaming the system.

Edit - it's back in stock

New gameplay video for Hexyz Force. It looks like a really good PS1 game, which stirs deep currents of nostalgia for me. A prize, though, to whoever can figure out how the hell you're supposed to pronounce the title.

"Hexes Force"?

Hmmmm, I'm going to go with hex-EEZ.

That sounds like a laxative for strategy gamers.

Finally - a cure for turtling!

Bah, I've gotten stuck again, 45 hours into Infinite Space, hopefully someone can give me some direction.

Spoiler:

The Lugos have invaded the LMC now. The guy that designed that superweapon was trying to surrender to the Lugovs and I was told to go capture/kill him before he reached the enemy. I did so, but was then trapped by a handful of fleets as I tried to get back to base. The Desmond Gate popped in randomly and in the confusion I got away. We charted a previously unknown course towards the sun, hoping to lose the pursuers in the plasma jets. We got through them but found Ursula waiting for us with her battleship and four shield ships out in front of us. "Luckily" (I totally could have taken her, I think) a reinforcement fleet showed up to rescue us.

I went back to the forward base at Oz and talked to everyone there, but I don't remember getting any sort of mission. I went back to Federation headquarters and handed over the plans to the superweapon. I found out that Lennox was investigating some sort of accident in the next system, so I went there to meet him. He told me that a ship vanished through the gate, but I don't think that he told me to do anything about it, but I think that he is my lead. When I go back to the federation headquarters and go to the third floor someone reminds me in yellow text that Lennox in at Luzir or something like that, but since we talked he has moved on, and I have no idea where he is now.

I have been wondering around for some time now, there aren't any walkthroughs on this yet, so I'm hoping the goodjer collective can help me out.

Bah, once again I figure it out 30 minutes after posting here. Turns out I needed to go to the

Spoiler:

LMC Observatory

Annoyances like this aside, I really am having a great time with this game, it's pretty sweet and I highly recommend it.
