JRPG Catch-All

Kat Bailey put up a new preview for Resonance of Fate. It scares me a little in the humor department, and I'm sure it might terrify others, but otherwise my interest in this game continues to increase.

I thought Kat lived in Japan. This has been out, as End of Eternity, since the Jan 28 over there.

Regardless, I got my pre-order in. The fight mechanics seem to start simple and then challenge you to use them in smart ways with different battlefield environs. Plus it just seems to do it all with a lot of style.

She moved back to the States over a year ago now, I believe.

I came through tax season with way more flexible money than I'd anticipated, so RoF might be a near-release purchase, if Final Fantasy and Dragon Age Awakening don't team up and murder my ability to stand RPGs for a while.

Thanks for reminding me that there's a Dragon Age expansion this month. March 2010 might be one of the best months in gaming history.

My bank account is hiding from me lately. I suspect this is why.

For those who are interested, if you haven't already noticed, reviews started coming in for FFXIII. Ign, Gamespot, 1up and Gametrailers all have their video reviews up also.

I was interested in what they'd do with a female protagonist but then I found out she's just one of several (doing a split storyline kind of thing, which I normally don't like) and that her design document was essentially, "make Cloud but with boobs."

Now I believe you.

.....why?

The original post is now up-to-date with released games moved into the proper section. All the links are now Amazon affiliate links for GWJ (where possible). I added a release date for Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love (3/31/10), the alternate title for Xenoblade (Monado: Beginning of the World), and an entry for Final Fantasy XIII. I also added a new game: Mimana: Iyar Chronicle for the PSP.

I was going to buy a new laptop but I think I'll hold off and get Resonance of Fate and FFXIII instead.

I picked up Yakuza 3 today. I powered through Yakuza 2 last weekend, and loved all sixteen hours of it. I can't wait for the game to finish installing.

Anyone else playing it?

I will be after FF13.

IGN has a gameplay video for Resonance of Fate, and GameTrailers has a preview.

The combat looks incredibly stylish, but I'm a bit underwhelmed by the overworld exploration and what I could see of the dungeon design. It looks like a game with a lot of nice touches, but I'm concerned that the combat system alone wouldn't be enough to sustain my interest for 50+ hours.

Thanks for the heads up on RoF. Seems like most major sites have a bunch of new previews. GT also has two walkthroughs of the combat system and it finally makes sense to me. I'm very much interested as the battle system in Valkyria Chronicles carried me through that game ... though it did offer more characters.

I watched those walkthroughs, and I guess I'm still a bit shaky on how the combat works. It looks like when you do a charge, you pick an enemy on the field and target that enemy throughout the charge, accumulating one attack for each time the circle gauge fills up. Is that your impression, as well? My question is: do you automatically aim at the selected enemy, or do you have to aim the reticle yourself? It's much too steady in the videos for me to think they're aiming with thumbsticks, but I don't know for sure.

It looks like you choose the first enemy you want to aim at, but if it dies then it automatically targets a different enemy (closest perhaps?). I keep watching the same part over and over again and I can't see any sort of aiming by the player while the character is moving.

Like garion, hadn't heard about Resonance of Fate and don't honestly understand it yet, but JRPGy excited. Love this thread, keep it up Clockwork

I am super excited that Infinite Space is hitting the market. I'm giddy with anticipation. Especially since I'm about to finish the first season of Yamato and the game is very clearly inspired by the series. The battles especially seem reminiscent as Yamato is more akin to naval than space battle in many ways, one of which is speed. That sentence probably doesn't make any sense unless you've seen the series, so ...

Since I have IS preordered, I'm going to be holding off on RoF as much as I like what I'm seeing. I'd rather pay $40 than $60, so this works in my favor.

Clocky, are you picking up RoF?

Not at release. My gaming budget is spent for this month, so I won't be picking anything up until payday (the 31st). It's down to Final Fantasy XIII versus Resonance of Fate. I'm pretty interested in both, regardless of their reviews, so it maybe a decision I make in the store.

Are you picking it up?

Not immediately. I rarely pay $60 for a game. Doesn't seem worth it most of the time.

I don't know when I'll get around to FFXIII either. Probably Christmas. I expect (okay, hope) the used game market for that game to drop it's price down due to the vast amount of copies floating around.

Might I interest you a trade? I've got and am playing FFXIII. Were you to buy RoF, I would happily swap with you once we're both done. I'm reckoning I'm going to be finished with FF in a month, and I don't do multiple playthroughs of JRPGs (and they've not announced any DLC to keep me interested beyond one playthrough).

Same offer to anyone else that wants to take me up on it. PM me if interested.

Which platform? Whatever I get will be on the 360.

Oops - forgot to mention. 360 too.

I'll get Resonance of Fate, then, and if you still have your copy of Final Fantasy XIII when I finish, we'll swap.

Deal!

Garrion, can you give me an idea of what Infinite Space is, exactly? I'm into space combat and ship customization and whatnot (Privateer is one of my favorite games ever), but I'm not sure a Japanese take on this sort of thing would sit well.

I'm not too sure the Japanese take will sit well with me past 10 hours either. The (random) battles and linearity seem very much in line with jrpgs of the past. Don't expect that to blow you away. Well, and the character design too (can't speak about personalities, though, just aesthetics). It's not Privateer, I can tell you that. It's a jrpg from top to bottom.

I recommend reading Kat Bailey's two blog entries at 1up about the game (here and here). If you want more specifics, I recommend any of the major sites as they all have previews for the game. There are a number of video interviews with the director from last year's TGS that you might be interested in (like here).

But you could just watch this very Japanese looking 2 minute video that runs through the basics of battle and ship/crew customization.

So as far as I can tell, it's like Pokemon meets Armored Core with anime narrative? I love the first two and don't mind the last, so if reviews are good, I'll be getting this soon.

Has to compete with an awesome book I'm reading and Pokemon SoulSilver for my out-of-the-house gaming time, though. Dragon Age, MW2, MLB 2k10, and FF13 pretty much guarantee no DS-time in the house.

Oi, speaking of Pokemon...I suppose if there's any other man-children (or women-children) that play it on this board, this'd be the place to root 'em out. The girlfriend I traded with for like five years is out of the picture, so if anyone is in need of a trade buddy for the new games, lemme know.

Without having played the game this sounds like an apt description, yes.

Just read Eurogamer's review of RoF. It seems like a really good game but i am not sure if i read correctly about the battles. Does the game have random battles? That's a serious drawback for me if that is the case.

Also does anyone know if there is a superior version like FFXIII is on the PS3?
