Country music icon Willie Nelson has written a Christmas song with an edge -- a protest against the war in Iraq that he hopes will stir passions in those who hear it.
Of course a boycott of Willie Nelson may be redundant at this point.
If a protestor protests in the wilderness, will anyone hear him?

Oh goodness! Someone spoke out against the war! Boycott! Boycott!

Artists make their living by connecting to audiences. If artists choose to use their medium to alienate said audience, they may find that they will have to make their living some other way.
This is one of the many beauties of capitalism.
Reagan understood that the key to peace was never arms control. Security had nothing to do with the number of weapons, it had everything to do with the intention and power of those who possessed them. - Charles Krauthammer
Quite so. But I find such a reaction pretty damn ridiculous in this case. It''s not like he''s proclaiming the supremacy of the white race or anything.
Do you read Sutter Cane?
Hey, the issue is important enough for him to make a public stand on it... I think people who agree with Willie that this is an important issue should let him know where they stand too.

Then perhaps writing the chap a letter stating that he''s a bit off his rocker on this one would be a bit more appropriate? And rational. I just don''t see why you should start boycotting an artist you''ve previously enjoyed over an issue like this one.
Do you read Sutter Cane?
It seems that you agree with the idea of boycotting someone over issues, just not over this one. I think this issue is more important than if heweredeclaring the supremacy of the white race - given that he would be dismissed as a kook if that were his stand.

I would boycott someone over certain issues, yes. All those issues are ''kooky'' ones though, the aforemented white supremacy, and the crazy misogynism Dave Sim exhibits being prime examples. (And regarding Dave Sim, I''ll still buy the Cerebus comics he wrote before he went insane someday. Albeit a bit reluctantly.) If it isn''t a mad opinion, why the hell bould I boycott the artist in question? Personally, I hve a bit of an aversion to suppressing political statements, even when I don''t agree with them.

Huh? I haven''t followed Dave Sim in some time now; what happened?

His wife left him, which caused him to spout nonsense about the entirety of life on Earth as a war against the evil of women and gems like ""if you learn to leave your penis alone, it will learn to leave you alone"", apparently.
Look here, here and here for more details than you probably want.

Jesus H Christ. These boycotts are so STUPID it''s incredible. Typically North American (I''m from there too before you insult me)
""Wow I don''t agree with some artist''s opinion even though their ideas are well developped, so I gotta ban them!!!"" What happened to free speech. It''s free speech to take photos of naked Barbies about to get chopped up by sharp knives but it''s not to actually have an opinion on a very important political subject.
That''s the worst thing ever. Disagree with your government and all those TV-worshippers (who think Oprah and Dr Phil are their savior) get after you. (I''m not including people that agree with the war WITH A REASON, I respect you.) Some people eat everything they are fed and they never try to analyze the situation and the facts. I''m always questioning every claim a government makes. What are their real goals? Why do they really make those actions -- what could make them lie?
Some people ate Bush''s claim that there were WOMD in Iraq, but now that''s it''s clear there aren''t any, they are not pissed off? Way to go! North Korea CLAIMED they had WOMDs but Bush doesn''t care. Oops, NK doesn''t have oil. Lots of other government have dictators similar to Saddam. Oops, they don''t have as much resources, so it''s not interesting to get them to the occidental side. If it''s OK to let people say they agree with the war, why is it OK to ban those that disagree with the government?
The people eating anything that TV feed them are the same guys with low-IQ mindset suing Rockstar for GTA''s ""Kill the Haitians"".
This is making very afraid of the future. All the muppets behind Bush, Blair or almost any government know these facts and are laughing very hard right now.
Edit: grammar.

AFAIK, a boycott has nothing to do with a ban. Since you''re so big on free speech, I''m surprised you don''t recognize a boycott for what it is - a form of expression. Voting with your dollars, so to speak, by not buying a product. In no way is a boycott associated with legislation or the government.
Um, you obviously haven''t read the song lyrics.

I don''t think anybody in Willie Nelson''s audience is surprised or alienated by this song... he''s a pot-smoking, tax-evading Space Cowboy and that''s what his audience wants. Now if Lee Greenwood had recorded this song, then you''d see a boycott
The people who hate Bush aren''t going to be Toby Keith fans.

Having the right to say anything you want means also having to deal with the repercusions of saying it. He''s free to say whatever he wants, and I''m free to not buy any of his music.

All I''m trying to point out is that you can be a jingoistic flag waver all you want, but criticise anything St. Bush does, and you are un-american, un-partiotic, and a damned Liberal. Sad times.

Did anyone actually call you un-American or unpatriotic, mateo, or are you speaking rhetorically?
I see this bandied about a lot as a criticism of the administration from the left, but as far as I can tell, the left made it up - no one from the Bush camp has ever called anyone un-American or un-patriotic for criticizing the administration.

No, the un-patriotic comments came out of the Republicans in Congress, and was picked up by morons like Ann Coulter.
Fortunately, I live in a Liberal state, so I''ve only been called unamerican to my face once, and that was by a Bush Cheny support, so consider the source.

Can we just issue a blanket protest of country music in general? if that works, we''ll go after top-40 pop.
