Mount & Blade Mod Recommendations

Whoops, it looks like I borked my install somehow. I was editing text files to tweak the game, went to start it back up and it crashed whenever it got to the "loading settings" part. The faulting module is ntdll.dll and I get a warning from WinDefender about "runme.exe". Isn't that a little helper program that lets third party games integrate into Steam? The Steam release of Mass Effect has it too.

Argh, redownloading now. This time I will have to verify each tweak one by one.

You could just verify the cache in steam, and that will fix it all up. Furthermore, backup, backup, backup...

That is the odd thing. I verified the cache, it went from 0-100% in a heartbeat and nothing happened. I was like huh? So my next reaction was to delete local game content. Which did nothing... All of the files were still there untouched.

I don't know what went wrong but I couldn't get Steam to do anything. So I just deleted the whole M&B folder in steamapps and am currently downloading it again. If THIS install crashes then I have a bigger problem.

Tamren I had to do that the other day, I posted about it in the other M&B thread.

I've been enjoying Chronicles of Talera lately. I got a little tired of mods that didn't do much besides buff up pikemen or archers. This one does a good job of really shaking up the units, and establishing factions which each have a very unique feel. Some of the factions also have unique questlines which have nice rewards, and one has a faction shop where you can purchase items based on how far along you are in their quests.

This sounds interesting...Do other mods (like texture packs, etc.) tend to work OK with these total conversions?

runme.exe? Sounds trojany.

I know, but my scanners have never twinged over it. As I said Mass Effect also has runme.exe. It uses up about 25mbs of ram and supposedly helps Mass Effect run through Steam. That or it helps implement the Steam form of DRM.

I suppose it does the same thing for M&B.

I think I found what crashed my modding last time. Instead of changing a -1 to 0 I changed it to -0. Would that have borked things?

Yes

Anyone played the 100 years war mod? I was wondering how it handles companions. Are the original set still there? Do they still bicker?

They have a tweak out now that turns companion arguments off, so you can have the full set. Running around with a giant custom equipped posse is a great experience. You just have to bump the experience by about 2000% so everyone levels at a decent pace.

EDIT: I'm beginning to loathe RAR files.

Install WinRAR and its' shell extension. Right click rar file, extract to /filename, done.

Not being able to open them isn't the point. I don't understand why people use RAR, when ZIP will work jsut as well, and is much easier to get uncompressed cause it's built into windows.

Well, WinRAR compresses better, so if we're talking about gigs of stuff, it's worth using. I believe 7zip has surpassed it's compression abilities. Anyway, you can also browse iso files with it, so that's a plus on its side too.

Yeah, I use 7zip. It's like WinRAR but one better. Takes care of all of my compression needs.

100 years war is pretty awesome. I struck banner for the English and theres a lot of cool arms and armour to wear.

Only 2 bugs have cropped up so far. Some of the english crested helmets lack textures. It doesn't cause a bug but they appear blacked out as if someone painted them with tar. That and the game popped up an error message once in a merchant shop. One of the english horses apparently has a missing texture. This pauses the game but if you tab out and hit okay on the error message you can continue as normal.

Plate armoured cavalry and crossbows are MUCH more powerful now. Annoyingly though you have to own a castle to recruit any knights. Im not that far yet.

Small update. If you plan to use the mod I recommend playing without the anachronism mod. What it does is add advanced plate armours to the game and buff horses to make them stronger. This turns any mounted knight into a supertank and heavily armoured infantry are almost impossible to handle solo since shields are extremely common. Its not as much a problem when you have advanced troops, but every army you come across will always have at least 10% knights. Until you get some of your own you will have problems taking them down.

Amusingly that missing texture I mentioned earlier does appear in battles. English knights sometimes appear riding invisible horses.

I didn't really buy mount and blade I used a crack to make the steam demo into the full version of 1.010 and I cant figure out how to use the mods...... I got the Age of Machinery and Fury of Odin mods and I want to use them......... I wouldn't mind some help how to get them to work or how to find the file/folder for m&b to put the mods in...

You're probably not going to find a ton of help here. We're generally fond supporting the people who make badass games like Mount & Blade rather than cracking the demo they give you.

Good point but I asked my dad to buy it for me because I had no money and he cracked it so I was still pretty happy because I wanted this game for a while after looking at youtube video's of it.....

Looking it up though saying that you did pirate a game isn't breaching the CoC, so he probably won't get banned.

My advice, wait until it goes on one sale again (it gets down to $5 or $10 pretty frequently) and have your dad buy the game. It ought to work fine after that.

Yeah, seriously, this is the sort of game that deserves your limited funds, it's on a shoestring budget and the price I've paid buying it twice, the first time when it was version 0.621 I've got more hours of fun out of it than most marquis titles. M&B really harkens back to the olden days when PC gaming was great... oh, and get off my lawn.

MBsSerinalv42, if you see the game come back on sale, PM me, we'll work something out. Pirating the game isn't helping anything.

I would love to pick up some mods for this game, but I'm completely new at mods and don't really know what I'm doing. I'd love to hear an update on this to know which mods are working for the modern version of the game. I don't even know what version I have. How do you see that on steam?

There's 3 versions of the game, and the name in your steam library should either say Mount and Blade, Mount and Blade: Warband, or Mount and Blade: With Fire and Sword.

The version I'd recommend is Warband, then for mod recommendations:

For a tough game similar to vanilla with a fantasy setting and more structure
•the latest versions of Prophesy of Pendor

For vanilla warband but brought forward a few hundred years technology wise and guns that are more balanced and fun than fire and sword
•The Eagle and the Radiant Cross

And for something very different and challenging, 5th Century Britain
•Brytenwalda

Tagging for when I feel the itch setting in again.

haha oh no, I know which game I have. Actually I have all three thanks to a good sale for the two new ones, but I hear fire and sword isn't all that great. Right now I am playing warband. By version I meant the current patch. Like 1.43 or whatever. Cause when I went to download the Diplomacy mod it said I didn't have the same version it was made for and that it would most likely not work. I'm not sure if that much has really changed that it wouldn't work, but who knows.

Thanks for answering though and not thinking I'm a complete moron for not knowing the subtitle of the game i've been playing and just pass me up.

How is this? I think I've played about four similar era mods in the .9xx eras and the teams always dropped the development. That said, I really loved a couple of those. Warband is still installed, so I might give it a go.

If you can get over the difficulty of combat* it is a really solid, well developed mod with more to it than vanilla.

*The difficulty stems from it being set in a period where the weapons are short, there is no real armour, ranged weaponry is limited mostly to javelins or really crappy bows and there are no real cavalry or cavalry weapons. If you find vanilla too easy this could be an interesting shake up for you.
