FFXIV: catch all

I app'd as well. I don't hold much hope for getting in, but I would love to.

Yea my luck getting into these was used up all last decade... maybe the new one will be a bit more kind.

I got an email telling me about the Beta. I have also applied, but I'm not holding my breath. To be honest, I'm more excited about FFXIII than FFXIV.

Has anybody gotten a beta email yet ? I know they said they wanted an extended beta for this one so I am hoping it starts soon

I had no idea, I need to apply if I can.

You can apply now, but i'm still not sure when they're starting. Any time now i'd guess.

Vanafest this Sunday, hopefully an announcement will happen then.

Yup lot of anxious people. There's been rumours that they're shutting down XI when XIV starts up.

Not gonna happen, Wata already said that XI will go on until player pop can't support the game anymore.. The jump in hardware between the two is massive and there are still a lot of people that play on the PS2. With 4 mil subscribers they won't just turn the money faucet off. I expect that there will be another full expansion pack as well as XIV this year.

I personally still play XI with level 75 jobs PLD/NIN/SAM/DRG/COR. The game is so easy compared to how it used to be in 2003, in fact I'm really enjoying it that way too.

Did anybody get an email today ? according to this the keys will be sent out some time today.

I never win at lottery or beta invites. Not sure it'd be a good thing with all of the awesome console releases this month.

They're just doing the lottery today. Probably emails out later this week.

Ugh. How do you put up with that interface? I hope they have improved it over the years.

I really wanted to put the job system through its paces more but man, I could just never get passed level 6 or 7.

I loved the game, I just had no friends to play with in it. All my friends went to WoW...so I followed. Damn Them.

Let's not let that happen with XIV. We should definitely start a GWJ Linkshell (or w/e they call it).

I couldn't get into XI at launch , I tried a friend account maybe a year ago found the game enjoyable. I think there second attempt will be an improvement.

I got up to around 55 on my main job and started on my second and just got fed up with it. The interface, players, grind just got to be too damn annoying. Have friends that still play it now and have all jobs maxed out like Dev.

Have there been any screen shots of the UI?

I'm moderately intrigued by this game but I am actually really excited for TERA (supposedly Lineage 3). Its not because I liked Lineage 2 but because the combat is much more action oriented. You have to move and aim constantly.

I don't think I'll ever like a Lineage game. But, my wife had 3 characters max level on Lineage 2. She was hardcore.

That is a keeper if I ever saw one!

Cheeto1016, its not a sequal in the true sense. Its a new MMORPG, by Square Enix and will have the same races. Think of it as FFXI with updated graphics and game mechanics. And most importantly, you can solo.

If FFXI allowed you to solo beyond level 20 I would have gone back to it.

You can and I have many times as i still play FFXI to this day.

The interface? never had a problem with it. Or at least nothing Windower + and Xbox360 controller on the PC doesn't fix.

Eh? It's a link to a forum post.

Here's the info if you can't access it where you are:

FFXIVCore.com wrote:

Battle

•Gladiators and pugilists have aggro raising abilities
•Monsters also form parties
•Not as much camping, you fight on the move
•MP does not refresh normally, but there are ways to restore it
•It will be important to control MP use
•Position will be important in battle
•There is something called "battle maneuvers" (the word "maneuver" here is the same word used in the beginning of the Japanese Gundam title, and starts with the symbol for “machine.” I’ll let you guys have fun thinking about that.)

Job specifics
Gladiator

•Moves like phalanx and shield bash from FFXI are useable, but they are different from XI. In 14, phalanx is an ability where you guard with your shield and attack at the same time

Pugilist

•whistle (FF11's taunt) and steal abilities
•Pugilist is made for people who don't sweat the small stuff

Marauder

•Axe accuracy is low
•"Boost" ability
•Marauder is for people who want the most glorious parts of the battle

Lancer

•Can pull sneak attacks on enemies not in battle stance

Archer

•Has a back-up plan when they run out of arrows
•Has an ability to make enemies flee
•Made for players who like to be alone
•Archers use bows, not crossbows, but other classes might
•Arrows are not labeled by materials like XI, but by enemy types, numbers, and landscapes

Miner

•a miner’s mining can bring in extra income for the party
•The more miners in a party, the more this effect increases
•Mining places will be made visible to miners only

Blacksmith

•can repair weapons and armor another player is holding

Thaumaturge

•can take MP from defeated enemies (defeated enemies my not immediately disappear)

More game info

•Everything done in battle in FFXIV increases TP, including casting
•Defense can happen both automatically and at the will of the user
•The PC version will be able to run on PCs from a few years ago, but the alpha version will only run on high-end PCs
•Can be run on 512MB of VRAM and above
•Alpha test starts soon
•Square wants to make it possible to play with your friends from FFXI
•Character customization won’t be fully available in beta (can’t change facial features)
•There’s a mode for restoring HP while moving
•The plan is the make the maximum number of members in a party between 6 and 8, and there will also be alliances
•The important things in battle are distance, range, and direction
•There will be magic you can use while moving
•There are screenshots in the magazine of the alpha version, and it looks like there have been a lot of small changes
•“Aggro/hate” has a different name in 14 (Translates to something like how much the enemy views you as a threat)
•Enemies will not be set in one area in order for people to pull them to camps; places that enemies will appear will be scattered around

Hmm sounds really interesting, but short. Not a whole lot of infromation.

Not sure if anybody else had to re-register their square account but as of 3/1/2010 they changed the site format and I had to recreate my account.

Did anybody receive any emails stating that their bete registration was received ?

There's some new information out on the disciplines, including a peek at abilities and weapon skills.

One thing I'm noticing is that abilities of FFXI's jobs are being spread out and re-arranged into the new disciplines. Specifically, I'm noticing that Thief may not exist in FFXIV (at least as it was in XI), as its abilities have been spread out among the Lancer (eg. Sneak Attack, Feint), Pugilist (eg. Steal) and Archer (eg. Hide, Shadowstitch) and Miner (Treasure Hunter). I hope a Thief-like discipline is added to the game, but it looks like all its abilities have been diffused throughout the new disciplines. I'm also interested in having crafting be a discipline itself; wonder how that'll play out.

I'm expecting a lot more disciplines to be added/revealed later, since XI had such a wide range of weaponry and jobs.

Oh, and I'm noticing a distinct lack of White Mage. That'll probably be revealed later, I imagine. Hopefully along with a few other classes. I hope Ninja and Corsair have spiritual successors.

With all the concessions FFXI has done because of American MMO design, i'm sad that this will be not as hard as FFXI was in the early days. That sense of accomplishment was more fun than a "fun" game can be.
