GWJ Chess Club/Tourno?

So am I correct in thinking that the person with the highest point total in each bracket is the only one to advance to the next round?

Hey look who has the biggest upset of the tournament so far. Woohoo!

Are you guys playing to the bitter end or giving up when you know you have lost?

I should probably have given up quite a bit before my last two losses, I admit.

I thought Aries was playing to the bitter end in an unrated Friendly, just turns out he was on an iPhone and couldn't see the resign option

I've been holding out till the end, just so my opponent has the joy of humiliating my pathetic chess skills.

To the bitter end! I always hope I can trick them into a stalemate
Never happened once.

My two losses so far came unexpectedly fast, so I have not had the luxury of playing to the bitter end.

Hey guys, I wouldn't mind getting in on this action if there's still room!

This is my MO too. I'll resign if it's early and I get really outplayed, just to get a reset. I'll play the endgame out if I think I can play for a draw. If nothing else for the mechanical exercise. I know that my personal endgame is weak because it's seen less often. I like the practice.

I just made Datin play out to the painful end hoping for a chance at redemption. I don't know that seeing a player's "rating" is good for me; it seems to affect my gameplay.

So you're not bitter I'm making you go through the motions? Good, I'll keep on then

Hey I've got a question that maybe you folks can answer. What's the better DS game to learn chess with? Chessmaster or Learn Chess? Any recommendations?

I played Prozac and Minarchist last night and got handily outplayed by both. Good games guys!

I'm thoroughly disappointed with the puny amount of trash-talking going on in this thread. You all are far too civil.

Also, what are everyone's feelings on rated vs. unrated games? I've been sending out invitations here and there, and basically randomly deciding whether or not they're ranked, because I don't know who likes what. Do you prefer everything to be rated? Nothing but tournaments rated? Discuss!

Rating doesn't matter to me since I don't play on that site outside of the GWJ tournament. Heck, I don't play at all outside of this tourney.

The tournament itself is already underway, so latecomers can't be added (brackets are already set). You can, however, hit me up for a non-tournament game. Several others have said the same earlier in this thread.

Regarding playing to the bitter end: If the game is pretty much over because the material difference is overwhelming, I'll resign and hope to do better next time around.

Same here. Maybe in meatspace, I'll play it out just to see the theory, but in an area where an 8-move forced mate can take 10 days to play out, it isn't as much fun.

Speaking of...fogrob, your next move will end in mate, so go ahead and make it already.

I tend to go to the bitter end. However, I might change since this is pbem. I tried for a stalemate in the last game I lost, but that didn't go so well.

Elysium just took me in a game I looked to be dominating... Unfortunately I suffered from tunnel vision

I'm a filthy skimmer. What site are you guys playing on and is it too late to get in on the action?

www.chess.com, too late to get in on the tournaments but I'm (and a lot of others are) playing random games with Goodjers. So come join us.

I was just on the site and I got a banner ad for Nuvaring. I'm...perplexed. It seems that the chess.com demographic is not exactly the target audience for such a thing. But who knows?

And any goodjer who wants a game, hit me up. The people I'm playing with right now are all too slow.

...I just signed up for my first tournament. This one. If anyone else wants to join me, feel free. I'm a little nervous, since it's my first time. Hopefully they'll be gentle. Anyway, if you see my rating drop by several hundred points over the next week or so, you'll know why.

Sounds like the right tournament for you! Maybe it will compensate the snail games you're playing with us
First tourno is indeed a bit nerve-wracking... even worse are team matches where you're playing for the honour of your contry! BTW, we should totally challenge Drunken Gamers or some other community to play a team match!

Nah, you taking longer is probably the reason you seem to have me in this slow crushing death grip.

I think a team challenge would be really cool. It seems like we should be able to find a few more people in the woodwork to sign up — surely on a site with more than 10,000 registered users we can dig up more than...21? Yeah, 21 chess players.

I don't know if I'd call it a "slow crushing death grip"... more like a slippery bear hug.

I agree that we are far fewer than one would expect for such a big community... I even sent an email to the CC, hoping they'd help us "advertise" the chess group to anybody who might have missed this thread, but they haven't read it yet (and probably won't ever).

Hey guys, i just signed up for the chess.com group as well.

Does anyone have an iPhone and the free Chess with Friends game? That's great for basically email chess. Let me know if anyone wants to get a game in.

Hey! We totally read that in the March 2 episode.

Just signed up as well and requested access to the Gamers With Jobs group. It's been ages since I've played.

Huzzah! It seems to have worked, as we've increased membership by 50% just this week. We should coerce Drunken Gamers into starting a chess team and go head-to-head against them.

The tournament I joined has been fun so far. I met a guy who has over 60 simultaneous games going, which I thought was crazy. At least, I thought so until I played another guy who has over 400 games going at one time. :O I can't even comprehend that.

Weird you should write this today, I just listened to it on my way home! Nice, especially since it's working! Now let's challenge Drunken Gamers. Elysium, GO!
Thanks for calling me "thorough" btw. That was the gentlemanly way to put it. My excuse is that I have at least five other games going at the same time!

Brain melted.
