Strom Thurmond: hypocrite?

From CBS News

I can picture Trent Lott showing up on TV tomorrow, saying, "Ha! You all thought I was praising him on segregation when in fact I was praising him on jungle fever! "

Can you imagine living long enough to have a daughter in her 70''s....wow....

Hell, his son is in is sixties last time I checked. I guess he now has an older sister.

Wow.

Doesn''t he have like a 25 year old son too?

Still, this is just plain screwed up...

Interestingly she and Strom are both on the record denying this. I''m not sure why she would automatically be believed if she changes her story, other than people''s petty desires to call Thurmond a hypocrite.

Until there''s a DNA test done, we won''t know for sure.

As an aside, I find it a little odd that half of the story is Dan Rather giving his opinions. I really wish journalists would just present the facts and allow the public to make up their own mind, but that doesn''t happen much any more. Pretty much any news story is laced with conclusions and opinions these days, both liberal and conservative.

""Our {racist slur}s is better off than most anybody''s {racist slur}s, why, they got washing machines and some of''um even got televisions. I can''t understand why they''re complaining.""
-- Strom Thurmond

""[Martin Luther]King demeans his race and {ableist slur}s the advancement
of his people""-- Strom Thurmond

""I want to tell you that there''s not enough
troops in the army to force the southern people to
break down segregation and admit the Negro race
into our theaters, into our swimming pools, into
out homes, and into our churches""
-- Strom Thurmond

""Our {racist slur}s is better off than most anybody''s {racist slur}s, why, they got washing machines and some of''um even got televisions. I can''t understand why they''re complaining.""

I thought that was Robert Byrd, Democrat, current Senator and former KKK member.

I''m no Byrd lover, but I don''t think that was one of his quotes. However... this is one of his better quotes:

Mr. President, the Emperor has no clothes. This entire adventure in Iraq has been based on propaganda and manipulation. Eighty-seven billion dollars is too much to pay for the continuation of a war based on falsehoods

Yeah, it''s nice to see that our US senators can be about as original and vapid as the average internet conspiracy theory blogger in his mom''s basement.

Do you think that our interest in Iraq was governed solely by concerns over human rights violations and weapons of mass destruction?

In the interest of forum consistency, start another thread if you would like that question answered. Of course there are about 50 threads on the subject already, but if you would like to share your views, feel free, and I will happily indulge you. On a positive note, you will be mostly preaching to the choir here, so if you need positive reinforcement, you''ve come to the right place...

Believe it.

Strom had jungle fever, baby!

God I don''t want to be put in the position of defending Strom Thurmond, but he later regretted and in every way he could made up for his segregationist and biggoted past. He held the record of longest filibuster...of the Civil Rights Act. Which does not jive with his philanthropy of the last part of his life, and his repudiation of everything he said like the above quotes. So you can forgive him for reflecting the prevalent attitude of the South at the time or not. I''m of the ""don''t ever forget it, but maybe forgive it"" mindset, personally.

Strom Thurmond''s family accepts that this woman is his daughter, and since his sister knew...not surprising somebody in the family knew this to be true.

No.

Strom Thurmond: Politician.

By the by, he had a daughter my age. I know, cause I was in the fourth grader with her. I would make fun of how she acted, but since she died in a car accident...sorta poor taste. I''m 32. He had a son who''s about 5 years younger if I remember correctly.

He was 100 when he died six months ago and one of his sons is 28?

Yeah, he''s in Guinness Book of World Records as oldest father. Or was. He fathered kids at age 70.

At leas the ones he admitted to...

Well, if you happen to see an Asian or Latino person that bears a striking resemblance to Strom Thurmond (like Ms. Washington-Williams does)...
