Snowgorok: The Fourpeat!

The reason for panic is that the Mid Atlantic states are halfway between the sun belt and the snow belt. The result is that we rarely get much snow and have never gotten this much snow. We don't have the snow removal budgets, snow removal equipment, and emergency vehicles properly equipped to deal with it. On a private level, nearly no one has a snowblower (it is economically unwise) and some folks don't even have snow shovels.

Imagine if you Canadians had to deal with 30 centigrade weather for three straight months in one summer. I imagine you'd panic.

Just for the record, Bear said he was from Syracuse and DT from Buffalo. Leave us Canadians out of this!

Yup. Us Ottawanians, while me may be used to getting massive dumps of snow, are quite well aware of karma and how closely it is tied to the weather. Maybe not this year, but it always comes back to haunt you. Mother Nature is cruel and vindictive like that. From us, you get nothing but sympathy. (Well, maybe some glee that it is "not us", but not much.)

Took an hour to get to work driving along 295 (Richmond's 2/3 beltway of stupidity) today and it usually takes just over 20 mins. While yes conditions were slippery with ice under snow, the complete stoppage of cars in the right hand lane 1 mile from my exit, so people could exit 2 miles after that was the most annoying thing possible. Did I mention it was quite slick this morning? Also, I think I control my camry better and with more control over grip than my wife's Xterra in 4WD.

Do you work in a vital industry that requires your attendance on a day like today?

Nope, sure don't.
But it wasn't really that hard to get to work, just annoying and slow. Remember, I'm in Richmond, so the snow is a lot less down here. We only have about 2"-3" of snow on the roads. My wife's a teacher, so she's off today. I'm an architect, and I came in to get something out the door so the contractor can finish off something for pricing by Friday. Only a couple people aren't here today in my office, and they work less than 40hrs/week anyways.

EDIT: Also, I spent 5 years in Blacksburg where it typically snows more often/heavily than the rest of VA, and made a point of going out for a drive every time it snowed so I could get used to it.

More f*cking snow pics.

I just shoveled this walkway!

Not quite sure when I'll be able to walk in my back yard again.

We are at ten inches on the snowstick on Robear's deck. Snow coming down hard and heavy. This is the wettest snow yet, quite heavy. It's funny how quickly people's attitudes have started to resemble those of New Englanders. "Ten inches? Meh. We've had worse."

Snownorok in Delaware. Pics 1 and 2 are out the back door, 3 is out the front door.

My brother drove his Chevy 1500 pickup into a ditch in Fairfax because he wanted to go to the gym. Dumbass.

Is this a bad time to mention that it is supposed to be 71 here on Saturday.

Yep. I'm in central North Carolina (Greensboro), where the second of two measurable snows has just about melted. (We're getting 50 mph winds today, but that's a whole 'nother thread.)

Our city's snow removal plan is equal parts salt and brine, plowing of major streets and waiting for the sun to come out and push the temperature above freezing.

Good luck to all of you with multiple feet of snow on the ground.

That is just about as dumbass as dumbass gets. Virginia (and Fairfax in particular) has really poorly laid out roads. He'll be lucky to get dug out by Spring.

He also picked one of the worst cars in the world for snow.

Pure... Where are you going lol? You're not gonna make it to the chinese buffet for a few days, I think.

I do suggest you pitch Pookie out into the backyard for our amusement. Pics or it didn't happen.

No. This is why I love Miami during the winter. Sunny and 61F today. Yesterday we were in the 70's. Bliss. I can even turn off the AC and open the windows!

I bet I've put on 5 lbs during the storm thusfar. Something about being housebound makes me want to cook, bake and snack constantly.

If anyone is feeling generous and adventurous, see if you can fill up a truck with snow and head for Canada. I hear they are trucking in snow as they set up for the Winter Olympics. Last I heard, they were working on the moguls course, so lumpy snow should be fine...

I have to work in this tomorrow. Yesterday was bad enough. I spent 30 minutes trying to figure out where I was losing an extra 7dBmV in a woman's cable because a 4-way splitter was buried in the snow where I couldn't see it.

I tried getting Pookie to go out the front. He gave me dagger eyes, then ran back in to Crystal.

It seems to be lightening up a tad. It was coming down in white out conditions. Now, at least, I can see down the block.

Perhaps we should consult Pat Robertson why God is punishing us with this snow. My guess is because we helped the Haitians.

Meh, I'd rather have the cold and snow and then the rebirth of spring, warmness of summer and awesome colors of fall than warm all the time. The way I see it, that warm weather just means you are missing out. To each their own, I guess.

Oh did I mention I can look out my window the the building next door and see a 6' icicle?

Time to break out the crampons and ice axes!

If you see something like this, hide...

We get snow in the MidAtlantic. We will get several feet over the course of a winter. We almost never get it all at the same time. A snowfall of 6 to 8 inches is a huge storm down here, and usually it is a combination of snow, sleet and rain. Ice storms are much more common that multiple feet of snow at a time. People may have big 4x4 and suvs, but they have no idea how to drive them in the snow. I needed new snow boots as mine finally gave up the ghost. There are almost none to be found at our local mall. That is how unprepared many folks down here are.

Yup. My point is that folks who live in London or Guelph (OT) would be idiots not to own snow boots, tire chains, and a snowblower with a 24" capacity, but rarely own air conditioners and never have central air. This is because they get multiple feet of snow, but never have to deal with the crippling summer heat that induced the British consulate to consider DC a "hardship post" until the invention of air conditioning.

Oh, and it really coming down now.

Change that to three months of 35c weather and you may have a point. I can live with 30c and no A/C. Most people I know in the London/Guelph area have central air though. Summer tends to get hot and humid, but admittedly not what you deal with.

That said, I'd like to thank you all for taking our snow for us. It has been an unusually warm/mild winter for us in Montreal. I haven't had to bundle up with the long underwear and scarf wrapped around my head very often. Also, no snow piles to trudge through on my walk to work. It's been great.

The snow is over my hubcaps now. Considering it started at around 7pm last night and stopped for about 5 hours, the rate seems pretty impressive to me. It is alternating between white out and just heavy snow. I shoveled the walk, but with 30-40mph winds, it hardly seems worthwhile.

Paleocon - the end is in sight. The snow has stopped here. The sun actually came out for about 5 minutes. The wind seems to have picked up even more than it was before, though. More constant, less gusty.

Looks like we have more coming on Monday.

Forecast here was upped at 1604 to 20-30", blizzard conditions until 10pm. That's 50% over the initial prediction this morning...

I'm jealous. I would love to have a snow day(week) right now.

Oh well, at least it is raining here again. It isn't supposed to be all sunshiny in Oregon during the winter.

I'm proud to see those to the south of the border finally get to experience winter. You can complain all you want, that's what winter is supposed to be like.

Now if enough Canadians cared, RIGHT NOW is the time we should be taking over Alaska.

Stay strong, and yeah, BC and Alberta wouldn't mind getting our winter back. We are actually trucking in snow this week to Vancouver for the games.

Gov is closed for a 4th day in a row.

I have cabin fever. A lot of it. I want to get outside but I can't. The plows haven't even been near my apartment complex.

Ugh, and I just got the word that work is cancelled for tomorrow. I'm glad that I'm getting paid to sit at home in my PJ's but I'd rather actually be doing something to be paid for.
