Star Trek Online Catch-All

Nice ship Shoal!

I had a great time grouping with Breander last night. The great spaceship combat only gets better with more people. Most of the battles we were in we were added to at least 2 others in the open instance. We each had a close call were we got hammered but survived. I hope someone has found a "attack my target button" on the team UI. I think that is the only minor annoyance is trying to find what Breander was targetting. Its easy at the start of the fight but any time after that its hard with a swarm of ships all around you. We each did a decent job but those extra 2 phaser volleys before we focus on one target can make a difference.

Either knowing what quests to do makes a huge difference in leveling time or they have dialed down the xp required to level. I am almost at the same place I was in open beta in what feels like a fraction of the time. Anyways, can't wait for tier 2!

I think it's the quests, by far.

You mean something besides clicking on the other person's ship? I know I heard that somewhere, and I think it has worked for me, but autofire doesn't even always work for me, so I'm not positive.

if you target a teammate and fire your weapons, they will fire at his current target. Likewise if you target an enemy and use a heal it will heal your targets target. This comes in handy for big fleet engagements when you aren't in a group with everyone.

Good to know.

In fact, I think each player in your team is assigned an F-key like in warcraft. Mashing F2, spacebar should immediately start attacking the second person in the team's enemy.

Trying to activate my retail key so I can create my Joined Trill main... and the account/subscription servers fall down go boom. Yup, it's launch day.

I said it in-game ... I really do like your ship's design.

I'm still trying to claim my rewards through Steam. Is there a way to claim them without subscribing to the game? I bought the game now, but my first child is due at the end of February, so I wasn't planning on subscribing until a few months down the road...

Or maybe I'm in the wrong place on their website to put in the key? I'm trying to do it where it says "Redeem Your Key"...

http://www.startrekonline.com/activate

That's the place, but the servers were down earlier. Mine actually took but I couldn't tell until maybe a half-hour later.

You have to redeem the new Steam key at the link you provided. If you get a cartoon, the server's busy

After several hours of trying I was finally able to redeem my key.

For PC games I really did think we'd reached a point where the number of players in the headstart programs would closely match launch day numbers. I mean, who's going to buy it first thing on launch day without bothering with a preorder that would've allowed them to start playing the game days ago?

There's probably alot of people like me, who had a preorder but weren't playing until today because of the way pre-order bonuses were tied to retail keys.

retail shelf sales still dwarf digital, and people, in general, HATE to preorder.

I thought that I had heard that digital was almost even with brick & mortar for PC sales. Of course I have no supporting info so I could've dreamed it.

Not to jinx anything, but I'm shocked at how stable STO has been for me today. I haven't had a single problem logging in!

On the other hand, I've been having graphics card issues on my laptop causing the system to restart...typically right as I'm about to enter the last phase of a mission...and then that away mission won't save from that point, causing me to do it again... Oh well...

Yeah it was really smooth for my friend and myself.

On a side note I would like to thank whoever suggested the Quantum Torps, I found a MkII launcher and so did my friend, (in the same instance even); they now happily live between my Dual Heavy Disruptor and Dual Heavy Phaser Cannons on my Escort, plus I'm rocking the MkII Mine layer on the back. I like to fly the thing like a heavy fighter just and tear through a group dropping mines behind me then circle around a finish em off.

Does anyone know if they changed the Beam Overload skill since beta? What it used to do was fire a super powerful shot but knocked your weapon energy down to 0. This made it nearly useless, except as a finishing move.

Also I think the reason everyone says torpedoes are bad a shields is because shields have some sort of kinetic absorption. IE part of the kinetic damage just disappears. Because if that were not the case then torpedoes would be even better than cannons because of the higher DPS. Regardless torps take down shields pretty well as it is.

Won't be joining you guys just yet. I thought I would be today but a few things cropped up and I'm going to be busy for a while.

It think it still drains energy but definitely not to zero. I found it quite useful tonight. I was using it within a few seconds of when the cooldown was up, just about everytime. It could also be that because I have it maxed out to 9, the energy drain is reduced significantly. The UI a lot of times makes reading mouse over descriptions very difficult. Rather than be off to the side and out of the way, they drop the pop up text right underneath your mouse cursor making it difficult to see what you have selected.

Just hit Commander and got my Tier 3 Cruiser. Thing is a beast with 6 weapons slots. Only thing that sucks (and it sucks a lot) is that you can only have one fore and one aft weapon on autofire so I'm back to slapping my spacebar constantly again. As the Senior most officer of the fleet, I demand cake. Or cookies, cookies will do.

...you will get juice and that is all.

Can I touch your ship?

I'm still LT7 because I've been splitting my time between ME2, work, my wife and child... you know, those sorts of things. Even so, I'm already getting the itch to start an alt that's tactical and goes escorts. What's wrong with me? I haven't even gotten my first cruiser with this guy and I'm already thinking of starting another character?

One thing holding me back from alts, however, is that this game seems extremely linear. At least early on, not sure about later. Unlike other MMO's it doesn't seem like it would be viable for me to just go out and blow up Klingons to level up. I pretty much have to stick to running missions and so far I've had to run every mission and they unlock in a certain order. Not sure there's going to be much replay here.

I have been pvp'ng some. Pretty much did Lt6 to Lt9 all pvp went pretty quick. Now going back and doing missions some of the engagmentsbthe npc's are -4 to me.

I know this is a noob question, but can anyone tell me how to get back to Earth Space?

Pull up your skills list (default button P) and pull out the "Transwarp to Earth Spacedock" ability. It's an instant teleport to earth with a 30-min cooldown.

Thanks!

I haven't been on much because real life has decided to hit me with a nice 1-2 punch. I just started 21 days of expensive radiation therapy for my cat's cancer, and today at work we find out whether we get laid off or undesirable relocation packages. That said, if I can find the time, it would be nice to pop in and take my mind off things.

Also, for other navigation, pull up the map (default M), click on the system list tab that lists the systems in your current sector in alphabetical order, scroll down to Sol and just double click. After that your ship will automatically start heading toward the system with earth dock in it. Of course later on you'll have to start paying attention to which sector a particular system is in though you can easily navigate to those as well.
