White Knight Chronicles - Catch All

Another JRPG experience is finally about to hit our shores. Real time-ish battle mechanics. Online gameplay (build your own town, go on adventures with up to 3 people).

I've been waiting for this title since the initial screens and videos that came out during the PS3's launch (!). It hasn't done exceptionally well in Japan, and reviews were somewhat tepid. In particular, the online component seemed to garner a lot of complaints. Nonetheless, it seems like it might have some promise. I'd have preferred a demo, but giftcards from a recent birthday = free, so it doesn't get much cheaper than that!

Anyone else looking forward to it?

Developer: Level-5
Release Date: 02/02/2010
Platform: PS3 (exclusive, published by Sony)

I'm interested - but not convinced about the online component.

Waiting for reviews.

How long have we been hearing about this game? Until I saw your release date, I would have sworn it had already been released.

Waiting to see if the changes to the game for the NA release make it a better game. The Japanese reviews didn't enthuse me much.

Level5 has yet to let me down. Looking forward to this more than FFXIII.

Yeah, I'm a huge fan of Level 5, more than willing to give them the benefit of the doubt on this one. Plus the online stuff looks like it could be quite a bit of fun. The US version is pretty much everything that has been released for the Japanese version so far so there's much more online content than when the game came out there and it looks like the interface is much improved. They even added stuff like voice chat for the western release.

I dunno. I never played the Dark Clouds, but I really got burned out and angry with Rogue Galaxy--it just became so tedious. Someone want to tell me my worries are unfounded?

Hey! Boredom is the #1 thing I'm worried about because I kept hearing how boring this game was when it released in Japan (mentioned most recently here, next to last paragraph).

According to wikipedia, there have been gripes amongst the Japanese players in regards to the online component. I'm cautiously looking forward to this.

Or maybe I'll just wait for the sequel, which has already been announced.

I'm looking forward to this, but it's definitely a rental for me.

I was interested in this early on, but once I learned it was a PS3 exclusive, I stopped listening, simply because I don't have (and can't justify the price of) a PS3.

I have a feeling that a lot of people are in wait-and-see mode on this title, especially with FF13 on the horizon. I'm not sure why I'm interested in it, but I'm a sucker for JPRGs.

For me, even FF13 isn't that high on my radar. It's also going on my wait-to-play list.

I'm still having a blast with Demon Souls... ME2 launched today... Bioshock 2 and Star Ocean also hit early Feb... Heavy Rain and Last Rebellion late Feb... then in March the Dragon Age expansion, Yakuza 3 and Sakura Wars hit. All of those will be bought and played prior to picking up White Knight Chronicles or FF13.

Yeah, I'm sure there are plenty of people that are looking forward to at least 2-3 titles on that list. It's a crowded release season, and WKC is definitely a niche product.

If anyone is in canada and interested in White knight Chronicles, EB games is offering a 50% extra trade in value for games traded in towards White knight Chronicles, I traded in tekken 6 and got 55.50 towards it.

I am now really looking forward to playing White Knight Chronicles but it's gonna be crazy to try to get to it because of so many games that I have to pick up with Heavy rain and FFXIII.

I'll be picking it up. I'm not really interested in FFXIII and this looks like it could be a lot of fun until Yakuza 3 releases in March.

This is the week! Always a decent chance that a JRPG Famitsu isn't super hot on is right up my alley. Really don't know much anything about it though.

I'm screwed.

I'm interested in the game, although I know almost nothing about it other than it's an RPG. However, I know that if I buy it this week, I'll probably never get around to playing it, with BioShock 2 next week and Heavy Rain following soon after that.

We'll see, though. If I find myself at Best Buy later this week, I might come home with the game anyway.

Might be worth looking at this combat tutorial video. Actually looks kind of complicated and grindy, maybe I'll wait for some North American reviews.

Probably going to pass. I can only handle about 1, maybe 2 JRPGs a year (even without the surprisingly robust amount of WRPGs coming out recently) and even the Japanese thought this one was kind of dull so I'm pretty skeptical, especially since FFXIII, Yakuza 3, Resonance of Fate, and The Last Story all look more interesting to me at this point.

Regardless of the improvements since the original release, the consensus still is that the single-player is underwhelming since the focus is on the online portion, which would turn me off in general but more so since I could see the online portion never properly getting off the ground here in the west.

I think I'm going to skip this one and get Heavy Rain instead.

Yakuza 3 is the biggest reason I'll probably skip this one. I still have to crack the shrink wrap on Yakuza 2. Maybe I'll do that tonight....

I'll be getting it so I hope a few of you guys do so we can play online with each other. I will be getthing Yakuza 3 as well, but that's next month. I have lost all interest in FFXIII so I need a couple games to take its place.

I'm still destined to pick this up tomorrow. Theoretically. My schedule is pretty wacky, but I might be able to do some co-op play at some point.

doctre is planning to get this as well, so maybe we can have a foursome.

Uh.

Er, well.

Yeah. You know what I meant.

Is it going to be out tomorrow? Everywhere is showing it being out 02/03.

I'm pretty sure it's shipping today, which means it won't hit the streets until Wednesday. I'll be eagerly anticipating Goodjer impressions.

Ah, my mistake. My preorder slip had a release date of 2/1, so I assumed it might be available today. So I'll get it tomorrow.

Count me as being interested when this was first announced, but the underwhelming lack of buzz and favorable opinions are stopping me from jumping on it.

Basically, this thread will be the last gasp determination if it's worthy of buying.. No pressure Tyrian..

No, of course not.

Guess I'm taking one for the team.

1) I believe voice chat was added for the US/International edition

2) Not sure on this. I am assuming it's got some kind of matchmaking service / lobby system. I hope that it's easy to construct a simple friends list (or use the PSN builtin).

Reviews have basically said that the single player game is standard rote fantasy JRPG. As long the combat system doesn't annoy me too much, I will probably be ok with it.

Still haven't heard about the store getting my copy. I will likely pick it up over lunch, and then give it some playtime this evening.

Not a great review.

I hate the word "predictable" for reviews of story because it's kind of subjective.

And I don't mind a "predictable" story if it's told well, which Level 5 can usually do.

My tolerance for JRPG convention is higher than a lot of people's I think, so I'll wait for RPGFan's review.

Yeah, I like Level-5 titles as well. I've already picked up my copy, so I'll have some first impressions later tonight. Stupid work. It always gets in the way of the important stuff.
