Hellgate London catch all

There is something to be said for learning from your mistakes and becoming a better person. There's also something to be said for suffering the consequences of your failures instead of sacrificing your workers for a second chance. Not saying that's what happened here, I just don't think we should be so quick to talk about lessons learned without examining the cost. After all, capitalism is a meritocracy, right? If the high-paid executive screws up and some low-paid designer doesn't, why is it the executive who immediately deserves another chance?

That's getting a bit into P&C, though, and I've never been an executive.

Because nobles are better people than peasants. It is the natural order of things.

Too many assumptions built into this discussion to go over it here -- suffice it to say, a lot of people were out of work, and while hopefully management did what they could to help everyone, I'm not going to blame anyone for then proceeding to try and get another job.

One benefit for the lower level workers is that they likely *won't* be tarred with the high-profile mistakes that management made, and so it's less likely to make them unemployable.

Yeah, becoming a game developer took care of the whole "unemployable" thing already.

More great news for Hellgate fans if you live in Korea.

Hellgate: Tokyo

Guess what game got raised from the dead!!

http://kotaku.com/5450862/hellgate-t...

I guess that's nice but at this point in time, I think I'ld rather prefer to play it single-player with that upgraded patch instead of online again except with a bunch of Korean 13-year-olds who have been playing it for 2 years straight and game changes that probably cater to that audience (like Microtransactions for extra hats and extra grinding).

I'm curious to know if they're including any new content (including the subscriber-only stuff from the US version) or if this is a bare-bones cash grab. Either way, I'll fire it up again.

My dad will be moderately happy to find out about this.

Your MOM will be... never mind.

The company who now owns the rights to this seriously screwed over Flagship big time and led to the end of the game that Torchlight replaced. I forget the name...maybe Myth?

There is a bunch of interviews and backround about it in various places on the internes. I personally won't be giving them a dime so they use their fat microtransaction profits to screw other people out of their IPs.

This should be interesting to see how it plays out.

Patches aside, I wonder if the new version may not be compatible with the old version. Do you think they'd make folks buy a new client?

And though its a different owner, I'm also curious if they'll make any goodwill concessions toward the original lifetime subscription folks.

Mythos - and I'm with you on not going near it.
Better to support Torchlight's developers instead.

Yeah, I'm kind of thinking "fool me once..." on this one. The game was fun for a while, but I'm done with it.

I got this for $5 at a pawn shop and think it was pretty much worth that. For all the marketing hype this thing got, it was a pretty dang standard, uncreative game.

If it can be played for free, I'll give it some hours again.
Thought the game has some good aspects, but tried to do too much, ending up doing too little of what really mattered.

It's hard to argue with that.

I know my dad spent some time on the game. But I also think he felt obliged, considering the lifetime membership and all.

This was probably mentioned earlier, but there is a mod that will bring most of the MP stuff to SP. The latest version of this mod is 1.2 and can be found here: http://hellgateaus.net/forum/viewtop...

Wait - are you THE ONE?

Are you.... LobsterMobster's love child?

Not that I know of.

So the game is going to come out again in the US, though it might be a different game or it might be an expansion.... so many questions for what I have to assume is little interest. I wonder if they will honor those who made the lifetime purchase.

I hope they've fixed the net code. Coop was so unplayable with more than 2 people and it wasn't really a picnic with just 2.

I paid for the lifetime sub as well. I actually kind of enjoyed the game even though it got a lot of hate, had problems, I liked the core game. I liked the setting and I was hoping it would continue to improve and get better.

It's interesting that the expansion (or whatever) will open up Hellgate Tokyo.

Hearing this news I fired up the singleplayer game. And had the same crushing realization: I want to like this game so much more than I do. Great graphics, cool-as-hell setting (so to speak), but nothing to draw me in without great multiplayer (which I never found enough steady people to really test out). I've been playing Dragon Age for 2 weeks, and the difference in the siren call of that game's story and the general malaise of HG:L's reminder that I paid a lifetime sub, I really should TRY AGAIN to love it, is astonishing.

Good luck to all involved. Great potential there (still).

The company that bought Hellgate are having a closed beta event from June 3rd to June 5th. MMORPG.com has some keys for those interested. Once you have yours, click on the "Gates of Hell" image here.

I'm with Jakobedlam. I'd love to love Hellgate, but I don't. I'd like to know what they've changed because if the answer is, "nothing," it doesn't matter how free it is.

I'd also like to know if my lifetime subscription - which I bought because I am legitimately an idiot - will mean anything.
