Welcome to Gamers With Jobs Radio, the beginning of what we hope to be a long running extension to the Gamers With Jobs experience. Fletcher and Sanjuro host this entertaining take on all the latest gaming news, some views on the big topics of the moment and even a look at what's happening in the GWJ forums. I'd like to point out that the guys are recording from opposite sides of the US so we still have some work to do on cleaning up the audio quality in the next broadcast, but we'll perfect it in time! The first episode runs at 26:60 minutes and weighs in at 5.97 megs, look for a new show every two weeks at the very least. Big thanks to Gameguru for hosting the show file and Elysia for whipping up the super awesome Radio Stan logo. Enjoy!

I transferred the show to my mp3 player this morning so I could listen to it during the commute. I think I did something wrong, however, because everyone is talking slow with a satan-like tone to their voice.

I can't wait to listen to it full speed when I get home, though:)

I think for the 1st try this end up pretty good... good job guys. Definitely something to look forward to.

Yoink!

needs more cowbell!

A suggested addendum to the bet: if Fletcher loses, he has to shave it off on the radio.

Great job guys, especially for being the first edition. Good pacing, voice work, etc.

So is this going to be a regular kind of thing now? How often do you think you're going to be doing these?

edit: doh, thats what I get for waiting several hours to make a post. "Every two weeks at the very least" sounds doable.

I can definitely see the radio relationship maturing. It actually got markedly better during the course of the broadcast. There were bumps that got much smoother as Im sure you both got more comfortable with not being in the same room. (cross country no less) The infrequent and minimal dead space was nearly gone by the last 1/3 of the show. Sanjuro has got the voice and vocal inflections to be a great straight man to Fletch.

I think this will be a great success because let's be honest, this is how most of us think/talk about our favorite passtime, whether we agree with whats said or not.

It's insane!
Fletcher! and SANJURO! On my STEREO!

That's how it sounded on my computer. After I finished listening my computer blue screened and wiped the project I'd been working on for the last two weeks off the hard drive. Now when Windows logs in it laughs at me instead of making that peaceful chiming sound.

Awesome!

A suggestion: bringing in a "special guests" each time for a short live appearance! This could replace the bygone Employee Profiles in a much more lively format.

I just finished listening to it, 'twas great work, guys, I laughed out loud several times.

A thought, though: We need to start a collection to buy Sanjuro a microphone that doesn't suck ass. I could barely hear him the whole time.

Fantastic all around. The 'musical interludes' were a really nice touch, all professional-like.

Am I the only one that thinks that Certis sounds a lot like Joss Whedon?

You could always mirror it on BT or https://yousendit.com/ YouSendIt if need ever be.

Demos, man, you're such a good sport. We loves ya. Well, not love in any kind of way you should feel compelled to post about. Maybe we would just like to have a nice platonic handshake with you. We're already seeing someone, you understand ....

That was really cool guys. How much of Sanjuro's low-fi problem is the microphone vs compressing and sending it over the internet to Fletchtopia? What you could do is in addition to sending the mic input via skype or whatever voice conf. software you're using, also record it locally in an uncompressed form. Once your broadcast is done, send the hi-fi vocal track over to Fletcher for assembly. I'm not sure what steps Fletch is taking when he assembles things (which BTW was very well done, the whole show was very tight and well put together), but that extra step may be more time involved than either of you is willing to be for a free web broadcast. Anyway, just throwing that out there as an idea.

I think you're right, JB, what I hear is compression artifacts from the internet transmission. With the right gear, it wouldn't be difficult to pull off what you are suggesting, but at the very least it would require a decent mic and audio interface on Sanj's end.

I think Sanjuro's on a modem. Thats why the lag and the poor audio quality. Either that or you guys need to find a better voice program.

he reason I only mention technical issues is because these technical issues prevent me from understanding about 35% of the show and make my ears bleed.

I do not want to hear about Sanjuro surrendering his "vessel" to Fletcher.

The rest of it was good entertaining stuff though

You mean his wessel, don't you?

This made me laugh hard enough that I almost chocked on my cranberry juice and pizza. Yay for college food.

Solid starting effort. Very entertaining. Looking forward to the next, I expect it to be an hour and have "guests". And maybe a musical act.

You are correct sir.

I don't know what any of that means, but it sounds.. professional. I'll point this out to Fletch; better audio quality is definitely a priority.

Glad to hear everyone likes it so far.

Awesome job guys. I like how you lifted the audio tracks from your porn collections for the transition music at one point there

Seriously though, amazing job. I found it hard to believe that this was your first go at it and that it can only get better from here on in.

awsome guys... this could be big

It's like a G4 show that doesn't suck!

Good job, it was entertaining.
I third the guests idea that would be fun.

How ironic

First, thank you all for the kind words and encouragement. This is a labor of love and I'm enjoying every minute, or rather, hour of it. We plan to do many more so stay tuned. They can only get better and better.

A thought, though: We need to start a collection to buy Sanjuro a microphone that doesn't suck ass. I could barely hear him the whole time.

The diminished quality of Sanjuro's vocals was actually due to a hardware issue on my end that Certis and I just (hopefully) tracked down and are in the process of correcting. We have several options for how to correct the problem, and it will hopefully not be an issue in the future.

For the technical minded: Sanjuro's signal had a wicked reverb in the raw recording. We had assumed that this was caused by transmission errors or (as some of you also surmised) Sanjuro's mic, but after running a few tests with Certis yesterday, we've narrowed it down to something on my end. We're pretty sure it's the on-board audio on my machine.

I'm recording and editing on my Inspiron 600m (PentiumM 1.6, 512 MB, etc, etc) with a lame-ass no-name onboard audio chip. This machine has all the oomph I need to do the editing, etc, but apparently we're getting a signal bleed with Skype, which is introducing reverb to whomever's voice I'm recording with. The quality is great initially - it's just reverbed. We're looking at hardware solutions right now. It may also be a driver or configuration problem, but upgrading to an external, studio quality capable, sound card can only make things better, so that's the solution we're leaning towards now.

To suppress the reverb, I had to EQ/Compress around the frequency of his voice, in Soundforge, so that the signal of his voice was still audible, but the slightly weaker signal of his reverb was not. Needless to say, this was fairly tedious, and diminished his voice considerably. It also did funky stuff to mine. I then had to process the hell out of everything to make it sound anywhere near smooth, and then boost the bits where Sanjuro is speaking solo so that his voice would be audible at all.

After all of that, and then encoding the show for MP3, it's no wonder that some of you are hearing artifacting. You'll also notice that I utterly drown him out when we're talking at the same time. In those instances, boosting his signal also boosts mine. Nothing I can do about it. Again, we're on it. It'll be better next time.

For the rest of you: We're still tweaking the set-up. I had to work some mojo that made it sound weird. It'll be better next time.

Awesome stuff, keep it coming.
