Sons and daughters of Troy, meet your new head coach: Lane Kiffin. Vols, commence your Female Doggoing.

They can have him. I would take a Chris Petersen though.

No no, if Petersen leaves Boise, he needs to go to a Big 12 school. I need him torturing Boogle's Sooners with hook-and-laterals every year!

I love the USC hiring process:

Day 1: "We want Mike Riley"
Day 2: "OK, Riley's staying put. We want Jeff Fisher or Chris Petersen. We're not so sure about that Del Rio guy"
Day 3: "We'll take Del Rio! Here's a contract offer!"
Day 4: "omfg hire whomever will answer the phone!"

I believe this is how Lane got the Raiders job in the first place.

Pete Carroll was not their first choice in 2000, either. That turned out pretty well for them.

Lane Kiffen is bringing Papa Kiffen and recruiting wiz Ed Orgeron with him to USC. They are going after Norm Chow as OC, too.

As a fan of another team in the Pac 10, I'm not sure how to feel about all of this. Orgeron can recruit big time talent and if Chow comes on board, Matt Barkley could get scary-good. Chow and Kiffen put some pretty good QB's on the field for USC during their stints as OC.

This has the potential to be a home-run hire.

Lane Kiffin: Too douche-y for the SEC. And that's saying a lot. (I'm looking at you, Nick Saban and Bobby Petrino.)

But Kiffin-to-USC makes me despair a bit. USC under Carroll was usually a lot of fun to watch. USC has a great fight song, and you could usually expect them to thump Notre Dame.

Hmmm. Guess USC now goes into the Schools-You-Root-Against-No-Matter-Who's-Playing. Sorry, Trojans. I'll be rooting for the NCAA to kick you in the 'nads.

Good riddance, was a blight on the SEC.

So, USC, facing possible severe NCAA sanctions, brings in a guy whose middle name is "Secondary Violations," and whose prize recruit from his only class at Tennessee, just plead guilty to armed robbery, good job.

I was thinking the exact same thing. That and who will sing Rocky Top all night long when UT finally beats Florida?

Pfft. Like that'll happen.

Sorry, I couldn't help myself. I just dislike Auburn, I hate Tennessee.

Heh.

I also have to point out that Lane Kiffin is a Fresno State graduate. Fresno State grads are now the head coaches of both USC and Cal.

I'm an SC Alum, and this is how I look at it:

Question: How much does it cost to get Norm Chow, Ed Orgeron, and Monte Kiffen on the same staff?

Answer: Lane Kiffin.

If Chow comes, this is a homerun hire. In particular, nobody recruits local talent like Orgeron, and Kiffen, as douchey as he is, connects with players and recruits *very* well nationally. Barkley needs Chow as a mentor. With him, Barkley has the potential to do some very special things. As much as the NCAA is a favorite media topic, my sources are telling me that SC knows it's fate already, and is proceeding accordingly. You don't bring Kiffin into the fold if you're worried about the impact from the NCAA. The basketball program took a major hit because of OJ Mayo's "handlers" and their access to the program. Nobody in the football offices knew how greedy Reggie Bush's family was being over 100 miles away from campus.

We'll see, I guess, but this should be fun.

One more thing, and this is interesting: Kiffin wasn't 4th or 5th choice. He was 2nd. Reliable sources are telling me that this was a "staff building" hire rather than a HC hire. SC approached Jon Gruden with the possibility of taking the reigns with Chow and Orgeron on staff. He wanted to bring his own staff, so no deal. Kiffin was the next option. Other coaches (Petersen, JDR, etc) were being communicated with, but to call them choices above Kiffin is incorrect.

My interpretation is funnier, hence, it shall be recorded into history instead.

Did you really mean to bring that up?

So the word on the street (or tweet) is that Chow is staying put. Still think it was the right hire, Fanatka?

Nobody told Chow the plan ahead of time?

Apparently no one told *Kiffin* the plan ahead of time. If the plan is to let Norm Chow run the offense, Lane Kiffin doesn't need to be telling the world via that the L.A. media that he (Kiffin) is going to call the plays.

Norm Chow is smart to keep a few steps ahead of that train wreck a la Harrison Ford's character in "The Fugitive."

Skip Holtz new USF coach

I know that no one else cares but me.

I think it is a good hire, he is a proven coach and a good recruiter, he will probably stay for quite awhile because he has a lot of family in the area. He is also a quality person.

Kiffin certainly seems like a douche. I found this a confusing hire.

ECU Fan cares. Holtz was the best thing that happened to them in a long time, and ECU fan is (rightfully) concerned that they'll take several steps back.

But because ECU Fan is delusional, here's what popped up on the message boards:

"The fact of the matter is we just missed the Big East ticket again. No way we have a winning record when they come calling again and we will be in another rebuilding phase."

"Wouldn't it be fitting for the Pirates to make the BCS next year"

"Norm Chow, the dude can flat out coach, has wanted to be a HC for a while now, and is well known"

"Personally, I don't think USF is a better gig than ECU."

Some of the (more reasonable) names floated over there are Al Golden (Temple), Jeff Jagodzinski (formerly BC) and Tommy Bowden (formerly Clemson)
