Gratuitous Space Battles Catch-all

I just posd a challenge. My nae n the game isKer and I includd Gamers with Jos n the taunt.

I went with an all around fleet. Good luck.

I think someone mentioned that the explosion from a nearby ship can knock out shield but I'm not sure it's true. The manual says that the chunks from an exploded ship will hit other ships at appropriate velocities to like the power rating of the ship. I haven't noticed that being true either (but then again I haven't noticed it not being true!)

I got the demo for this, and it looks like something I should really enjoy, but for some reason I'm just not getting it. My eyes sort of glaze over at all the numbers, and I can't really make sense of anything. Mind you, this is with just the demo parts available. I can't imagine what it'd be like with a whole bunch of ship parts unlocked.

I stare at the post-battle screen trying to make some sense of it, but nothing is really leaping out at me saying "fix this" or "this worked". Is there some kind of very basic introduction to this game or do you just have to get it intuitively? The tutorial teaches the mechanics of the user interface but absolutely nothing about the game itself.

The post battle screen isnt all that helpful really. The most important statistics are % of shots that hit and % of hits absorbed by shields/armor.

Haha!

For some reason it says I attempted 3 times but I only actually did it twice. But I did edit a ship pre-deployment and crash.

I ultimately overwhelmed you with my super-fast fighters. The first time I was really cocky and only used half the honor and got brutally demolished. The second time I gave you the benefit of the doubt and cashed in all my funds.

I go the message!

Do you get honor for beating me?

I think so, but I spent all of it on the battle. So I get nothing!

Nevermind, I'm dumb.

I got the message!

Do you get honor for beating me?

I had about six people attempt my challenge. I don't think they were all Goodjers though.

Has anyone here posted one they want me to try?

I will probably use a variant of the list I posted.

I'm afraid to show my hand too early. Gotta have some secrets you know >:)

But actually I want to "master" federation ships before moving on to others.

I can't get this game out of my head. I have so many damn games on my plate right now, but I find my mind wandering to this game constantly. I have not even really started it yet. I've just been playing around with all sorts of ship combinations on the tutorial mission still.

Sooooooo, is there a Star Wars and Babylon 5 mod out yet?

I believe so, if you check in the forums under "Gratuitous Modding" some people have uploaded models. I believe there's even a complete Macross mod. One guy even made a cruiser version of Serenity from Firefly.

Star Wars

This is what I call a good thing. I too bought a number of games on the Steam sale (and a few others for console) and I'm happy to let them sit. Then I'll have new games to play later and not spend more money. Just obsess. Let it run its course. The pile will wait.

My fleet is getting wrecked.

I am going to try updating it later this weekend.

Unlocked every ship/race/module. Time to work on challenges.

It happens. I've lost two frigates from a cruiser explosion. You have to be close, and it's not that much damage, but both of my frigates were shields-down and on fire. Basically, watch for the shock wave after the explosion - if it hits the ship, the ship'll take damage.

It should be more - it's not nearly enough of a penalty for keeping your ships in tight groups to focus firepower.

Btw, for those of you guys who have a DS, coming out in March is a game called Infinite Space. It's a space opera rpg and the characters and voice acting are all anime inspired (Yamato in particular), so if you can't stand anime, I wouldn't bother with it, but the basic catch of the game is the depth of the ship building. Here's a quote:

This game is all about venturing into the vast universe by captaining your own fleet of customized spaceships. There are a variety of ships to choose from, which you can then build on with a huge selection of available ship parts. As captain, you will also be responsible for assigning roles to your crewmen and keeping them content. As the game progresses, you’ll be able to add up to four additional ships to your fleet and create your own battle formations and strategies.

The game was developed by Platinum Games (ex-Clover people) if that matters to anyone.

I figure that someone here might be interested since we all seem to like that whole customizing thing. It's still a jrpg, so don't quite expect the tactical experience you might want (okay, I want), but I've got my eye on the game regardless.

I'm trying to make a no shields challenge fleet, but I can't get the bloody ships to move in any logical fashion when I test it out. Any tips? I never realized how much I rely on the enemy fleet coming to me rather than vice versa.

You can adjust the engagement ranges through the AI orders for the various ship classes.

The only really good way I know of is a combination of formations, escort and engagement ranges.

What do you guys think of the tribe expansion? I LOVE vanilla GSB, but I figured I would get it when it goes on sale.

I haven't picked up Tribes yet, but this post of the new asteroid belt effect and depth of field changes looks awesome. I'll definitely be picking that up.

I think I missed something. What are these challenges you speak of cause this game has really hooked me.

People create fleets and then post them online for other people to play against. On the main menu there's a button that says "Online" where you enter your registration code. After that you click the button that says "Challenges" to look at online challenges.

You might try reading that manual thing, save you and your bladder some troubles.

My formations traditionally were meant to keep my fleet together as much as possible to maximize my firepower, but that's a lot less fun to play against in a challenge. Guess I'll have to buckle and throw some more engines in there and relax the escort distances.

Oooooh, another expansion. That makes me happy.

If anyone's interested in picking this game up, here's a code that lasts another 6 days that's worth 25% off.. I believe it's a one shot code, so whoever wants it, gets it.

BNXP00099

I believe it works for ordering directly through the positech games website.
