Economy surges yet again, growth now up 8.2%

From Yahoo/AP

That sound you here is the funeral dirge for the Democrat's chances in 2004.

Only if job growth follows, and quickly.

Unemployment is trending down and there''s no reason to think that it won''t continue. I''m not sure that it needs to drop at all for Bush be re-elected. Unemployment is about average, historically-speaking. If the economy is growing and the stock market is up, that will be all most voters care about - although you can bet that the Democrats and media will try to convince them otherwise...

Unemployment also lags behind economic growth, for obvious reasons. Chances are, any major spikes in employment are a quarter or two off. Furthermore, this economic upswing is coming far enough away from the ''04 election so that Average Joe and Bob the Bachelor can notice the effects before they decide to hang the incumbent, like in ''92. Like I said, the Democratic Party is dead in the water next year.

I Majored in Economics.

And what does an Economics major usually end up doing? Being the shift supervisor at a coffee shop, bossing around all the English majors.

Damn straight.

Back to work Elysium!

The Democrats didn''t need a good economy to sink their chances. That group never had a chance.

See, even Sarcasm Boy is relenting!

Ok, so maybe this is a little off topic, but when news stories mention economy growth, what exactly is that? Are they referring to just the GNP, or are there other metrics?
What does the GNP measure? If, for example, a company sends 2000 jobs overseas, and thereby saves 1 million dollars, does that count as an increase in the GNP?

To describe the GNP would be so boring I think I might fall off the planet if I read it...

There''s a link, I couldn''t read it. Maybe someone could summarize it for me.
