Mid-Atlantic and Southern Storm

9" in southside Richmond. The {ableist slur}s were out in full force last night. My normal 20 minute trip from the west end to home took 75 minutes.

This is why I left work at 3. Well that and I had to do some Christmas shopping. I beat the flakes all the way until I got off the interstate and by then, it was only 5 min including the lights to my house.

I did get delayed by some random accident at 295 and the route 1/95 on ramps to 295. Some person managed to put rubber down across both lanes and smack the tree back up the other side of the grass ditch off the side of the road. People really couldn't figure out how to merge there. Still it was only a short 5-10min delay, and it was pre-precipitation when I passed it by about 10 mins. I feel sorry for those people b/c the snow was rolling in.

Why did someone "park" their chair in the lot?

Keeps people out of the spot. Residents only in front of the houses.

The snow is now 2-4mm, as before but with needles and columns and some aggregate forms.

14" west of Asheville, NC.

Very pretty this morning, but boy is this stuff deep.

The interstates in western NC were a disaster last night. Multiple trucks jack-knifed on both I-26 and I-40 turning both roads to parking lots. Folks were abandoing their cars and walking for miles to hotels, before emergency crews started rounding folks up.

Our power went out for an hour around 3:00am, but we are lucky, 70K people without power in the Asheville metro area.

Hopefully the roads will clear up by tomorrow.

I'm stuck in the house with an OCD wife. She has me washing the baseboards and furniture polishing the bannisters. Somebody help me.

looking at about 18" and its still snowing heavily

grill in there somewhere

Here in Saskatchewan we were having -35 Celsius temperatures with a wind chill of like -45 - 50

It was pretty crazy but not we are getting around -10 Celsius and it's awesome, I really hope it stays like it is but I suspect it won't

In Herndon, the snow started last night before nine-thirty, and there is now well over a foot on the ground in my apt. complex parking lot.

Looks like it's gonna be 2 days of eggnog w/ spiced rum, beer, and chili in between sessions of Dragon Age, Torchlight and Arkham Asylum. Life is good.

I apologize for laughing at your misfortune.

Yeah dude, that's just brutal.

Things have been really picking up here in Falls Church. From what it seems like, it's easily past the 1 foot mark.

We walked over to our local Giant just for kicks, and while the store was pretty slow, the shelves were freakin' empty.

People are walking down the middle of the major roads 'cause there's no cars out.

We are at 9.5" minimum. I'm not sure my measuring table is the best spot, but it's a good amount.

Ya woke up this morning excpecting to see that it had came down... Didnt happen. It in fact warmed up to around 40. O.o They say we may get some tonight, but it looks like we missed the storm.

My Cooper S still has Summer tires on it. I think I'm stuck for a while.

I went to the Safeway last night on King St. in Alexandria and it was pandemonium. All I wanted was a case of beer and some ground beef to make chili but the lines to checkout went all they way to the back of the store. It was gridlock in there, I've never seen anything like it. People were stocking up on the weirdest stuff - I saw two ladies walking out with a shopping cart literally full of cereal.

I may brave it today. My Jeep shouldn't have any trouble with it, but I'm worried about the other drivers out there. I drove in this stuff regularly in Michigan. I went to college about 30 minutes from Lake Michigan, and I think in the four years I was there class was never canceled (and it was mostly a commuter school, too). This sort of snow was a few times a year event. Then again, most people who live in that area have four-wheel drive cars or trucks, and they don't freak out when it snows like folks do here. It's wall-to-wall coverage on the local news stations.

WNC might be getting another inch or two with wrap around snow.

Our road. A few trucks are making it out, but I don't think our cars are going anywhere.

There is no booze in the house.

Wait... does your wife and mine subscribe to the same newsletter or something?

Modern Slavemaster? It's mostly an online publication, but yeah.

This will not end well.

It's cool to see so many people from the area posting. It's a little late to schedule Blizzard-Con DC - 2009, but a slap & tickle may be worth putting together after the holidays.

I agree -- though, on these forums, a "Blizzard-Con" would should have a different context, no?

Can't be worse than my Focus. Both my front tires are bald, and I was out in this sh*t this morning. Still had to go into work at 0630. I can't say I was driving, because it was more of a 14-mile long controlled slide.

Thankfully our manager decided it wasn't safe to have us head out to people's homes today, so we just had to call our customers, then I got to head back home.

My guess would be we're up around 10" now. Snow's still coming down though.

I used to drive an 06 Focus and have test driven a mini(not an S). The combination of far more torque and HP plus summer tires is not good for this kind of weather; it's pretty close to the difference between FWD and AWD, for a point of comparison.

I could be down for a post holiday S&T.

Seriously, I saw that and my first thought was a DC-area retelling of "The Shining".

OOof! That really sucks!

I went to the store TWICE last night to make sure we had supplies before the storm of the century set in. By the time I got home it was coming down pretty nicely, I slid into my parking space and the ABS kicked in.

My heart goes out to you poor bastards who don't have snowblowers. Shoveling 20" of the heavy wet snow is NASTY!

I'm about to run out of beer but I have a half liter of vodka, about a half dozen or so shots of rum, and other assorted liquors.

My dog doesn't need to drink to have fun, though:

The trick to shoveling is WD40 on the blade. Apply liberally and often.
