There is a special flavor of haterade available only in pub games. You have clearly drunk deep of it.

I am sensing a lot of hate and anger toward so called "pub" players. I have to admit I am a pub player and what really turns me off about playing this game online is when people get so upset about mistakes and decisions that other players are making often in the heat of the moment.

So why can't people just calm down and remember the mantra "losing is fun!"? I have never lashed out at another player or so-called "rage quit" my team just because we lost a match so miserably. Just dust yourself off and try again, or thank everyone for playing and graciously leave. But why yell and curse at other players who themselves are just trying to have fun? I mean is there some kind of prize money at the end of the day if you get the most wins? I have to say from the name of this site "gamers with jobs" I was hoping for a more mature level-headed approach to gaming, but I see a lot of the same angst in this thread that people themselves are accusing so-called "pub" players of having.

Agnst yes, but I have never experienced anyone yelling or curseing anyone out in game, unless it was in jest.

Some people get angry, but in all my time of playing TF2 and L4D (and 2) with people here, I've only seen 2 or 3 ragequits and a handful of people genuinely getting angry at each other. People may get a little peeved on the forums, but in the game, they are usually really friendly. Most of the people (myself included), also don't mind losing. If teams are way unbalanced, we'll often shuffle the teams so that everyone has a better time.

Something seriously needs to be done about that. It had happened to me in Parish and drove me nuts. If your in the finale exit, you should be invulnerable because it was hard enough getting there, especially on expert.

All in all a great run though.

One one more expert map for me. Parish...oh how I hate your finale on expert.

Thanks for the mention Tempest. I can't feel too bad about that ending because aside from that, the whole run went perfectly.

That's karma for stealing my spot, you bastard!

Just kidding. I blame Tempest. I leave to go take the Browns to the Super Bowl, and when I come back, the expert run is on, and I'm on the outside looking in. Don't worry, I put on some Celion Dion and cried myself to sleep. Then spent the rest of the night humping Psych's head.

I totally felt guilty at first, but then I picked up a chainsaw and forgot all about it.

Totally agree with this. Also with Wynd that I’d like to play more scav games.

Well feel friend to befriend me on steam. Also, be sure that you’re maelstrom is funny. For me, that’s the difference between entertaining and douche-y. I try to straddle this line, but far too often have too much of my body in douche.

Actually the stuff you just list is what causes most of the "hate and anger" we have towards pubs. Have you ever played L4D2 with us? If not I recommend it, then you can see there's a difference between us and most public games.

This is the most mature site for gamers I have ever found on the internet. That is why I am only active on this site.

I think everything you are saying here is exactly what we all think. I don't get the impression from this thread, nor have I ever experienced, a GWJ player do any of these things that you just listed. We don't assume just because we're playing with a person that we met through a public server that they must suck. It's the people that don't think losing is fun, the people that rage quit, and the people that curse at others for no reason that we don't like to play with...and there happens to be a correlation with public servers.

The "angst" in the thread is for the people in the pubbies that do everything you describe. We don't like that. We like fun.

I think when we refer to people as "pubs" its usually not because "oh its a pub player they must suck ass". Its more because these are people we don't know. GWJ only-games have rules, etiquette and banter. All of which are balanced by a hilarious lack of mercy. These things are what make the game for me.

When you bring in a friend of a friend its a square peg situation.

I need this game. I yearn to charge someone off a bridge.

I can't wait for this. The only downside we all have to awkwardly accept NathanialG's obsession with Zoey.

Thanks for the responses, I'll let you guys know what my bro and his little friends say after I talk to him.

On the topic of rage, I would like to apologize to Dan and state clearly and calmly that a) I still maintain my position that the lefthand building on Sugar Mill Scavenge is a Grade A Death Trap, b) the problem wasn't that we split ourselves up -- it was right at the start of the round -- it was that we were forced apart by the other team who merely took advantage of the Death Trap nature of the building [see point A]. However, I will cede the point that our team might have reacted to the attack in a way that didn't help us to regroup, and each of us is equally culpable in that regard.

So yes, you will never hear me suggesting to try going into that building as our first gas-can pickup unless we demonstrate a significantly higher skill level than our opponents.

You'll fit in nicely here then. The reason many of us are wary of pub players is because they are usually the ones cursing people out and rage quitting. We play to win, but we play for fun also. In all my time with the community here, I've seen maybe 3 rage-quits, and even in those few situations it was more of a "sorry guys, I'm just not having fun. I'll bow out and let someone else take my place" than a "RARARARGH! YOU ARE TEH SUXORZ!!!1!"

Just played the closest scavenge game yet. Both teams got all 16 cans in the hotel and we lost by half a second. Yeah, .5 seconds. DOH!

Bill_Lewis wrote:

It is so refreshing to hear someone else say it out loud. It's weird, isn't it?

Well, losing is sure fun but there's losing because the other team is better/luckier and losing because one or more of your teammates thinks he's playing with bots. I've been in countless games where I get attacked and no one seems to care - they go on minding their own business. Just a few hours ago I was playing Scavange and there was this Nikolas from my team. Every time we spawned (the park in The Parish) he would run to the section before the siren goes off and starts jumping around if he's infected or just shooting if he's a survivor. That happened 2 or 3 times in a row so the next time I just killed him and he left the game. Everything went OK right after this.
That's why I prefer to play a game with members of some sort of closed communities where it's just fun and no one gets mad for simple mistakes and can laugh them off.

yeah, that was nuts. Then I played another round tonight were our highest score was 2.

For those that wanted in on the vs match between my brother: he said he's game for tonight. I'll post an announcement in the steam group and we will just do a first come first serve deal.

I admit that I posted this after a night of gaming with 2 of my RL friends. We were constantly being harassed, yelled at, etc (I'm sure you all can fill in the rest there) and after reading a bit of this thread and putting two and two together (despite one being square, the other being round) concluded there was no hope of finding a decent group to play with, but after reading the great responses I feel I owe an apology for accusing you all of the same.

At any rate I would like to join your steam group is possible.

No problem. Also, you can't use the tags for quotes until you've been here a bit. It's to make us feel special...erm...to prevent spam.

No hard feelings. I'm more upset that we needed 2 to win and couldn't get them on the round before that. What a clearly infected-favoring map.

Had much fun in scavenge and vs tonight. Seems like I lost more than I won... hope that's just luck and not saying something about my skill level...

Although the last vs round we mainly lost because of the disconnect.

Still some of the most fun I've had losing at this game. Thanks guys.

And quote seems broken? Or can newbies not quote either? I snipped it anyway.

Sent you an invite to the GWJ and L4D groups. Welcome. Steer clear of that Nate guy he will go on and on about Zoey it's kinda creepy.

Had a solid VS game with Prozac, Yonder, Psych and other (apologies, I'm terrible with names) on "The Parish". I think we ended up winning by about 200 points (in your face Prozac :D).

Was a real annoyance at one point, I was owning as a spitter, hadn't died since the start of the level and the game decided I needed to play the tank... And I really suck at tank...

Definitely will be playing more, tho the east coast server was brutal on my ping.

I was on Prozac's team, and my own apology must be expressed for leaving them all to die in the finale. I've just never survived it. I kept thinking they were right behind me, from the moment the Spitter opened up right when the bridge dropped and I darted down the left edge. I could almost feel the wind of those turbine blades as I ran forward on adrenaline...which then turned out to be the Tank blind-siding me and knocking me off the bridge.

It was kind of lame how we got an A.I. tank in the alarm crescendo and no commons for the first half of your run.

Also, Thanks to Tamren, Wired, and Kazar for playing with me in a vs match against my brother. I don't remember what the final score was be the point is we won. Sorry that no formal invite went out, just sort of worked out this way. But apparently the real friends he wanted to play against us with will only play on servers they have admin rights to.

Agreed, tho we got the tank spawning before the crescendo started (before the room locked) so that sucked.

What I liked was the the pure terror experienced when a couple of my team were on next hit dead, and I accidently killed OG_slinger with a stray bullet. We were so paranoid, but we just didn't die

I think that little run was basically the difference between the teams in the end.

You were our MVP of Dead Center last night :)

First, I want to point out that I only did the first charge. I know this because we had long discussions on our team about who had and hadn't saved your asses with a charge. It was unbelievably annoying.

You were leading the team by far, dominating with that spitter. Then I said "I hope they don't make you be the tank...." So you can blame me for that one. But it turned out to be a great match anyway, with nice Australian beating evil Australian.
