Battlefield: Bad Company 2 Catch-All

This sounds like such a douche-y FPS Centric Gamer thing to ask but anyone know if BF: BC 2 will run at 60fps? At least in multiplayer? That was my objection to the first game (well that and the terrible single player) -- felt slow. Slower than Halo even.

It felt like kind of jarring going from Modern Warfare to this beta. It definitely runs less then 30 FPS. A few things to keep in mind though are that it is a beta and that the PS3 may not be the lead platform. We will have to wait for the final version.

On the bright side the image is significantly sharper then modern warfare (especially when up-scaled to 1080p). I imagine that this is due to it actually running at 720p instead of MW's wacky 640p.

Its funny that you mention Halo as an example as I have never had framerate issues with that. The general movement, however, was much slower then MW2.

There are some major framerate hitches. There are times where it gets very choppy when you're running or turning quickly, while other times the framerate is fine. Seems to happen most during the third stage for me, or at least that's when I notice it the most.

Evil, while I think the game looks great, it does seem that some textures are big, or just bad. For example, the shadow textures seem to be HUGE in some cases, with big square jaggies along the edges. The PS3's lack of anti-aliasing is pretty apparent there, and is sometimes apparent in other areas too. I can't put my finger on what it is, but sometimes things just look grainy instead of being sharp. It seems like they are just using some overly large textures for some things. Also, the guns look awful from the third-person perspective.

Hopefully they'll tighten up the graphics on level three before it ships.

At least they have plenty of time. I'm assuming that some of those bad textures are just place holders. As a whole I feel its much sharper then Modern Warfare 2. You can see allot farther making sniping feel more useful.

The specs are pretty high. I will still be able to run it on mid level or something like that, hopefully until March I will have something more powerful, but I doubt it. The game looks amazing, though, I can't wait for the beta.

Played the beta a bunch more tonight, about three hours worth. The jaggies are most noticeable to me when zoomed into ironsights. I had better luck with the framerate issues, but it is definitely 30 FPS or lower. Does anyone have Bad Company 1 on PS3? I wonder what the framerates are on that.

A pretty serious team balancing issue came up tonight when, at the start of a round, it was 7 vs. 12. A bunch of people must have quit our team, and it was badly mismatched. It must not autobalance teams, so things went on like that for about 10 minutes before I finally just quit the server.

I've found it very common for PC games to autobalance and very rare for console games to even attempt it. Modern Warfare 2 even has a "forfeiture" counter that lets one team just win if the ENTIRE other team leaves. Guess it's how the super hardcore gamers would want it. You know, the guys who think the entire purpose of playing is to end the game as quickly as possible.

I just left the game and joined another server, but the bummer about this beta is that it's not uncommon to leave the server and go right back into the same one. This being my first foray into console shooters, I'm not used to it. It's not the other team's fault, either. They couldn't switch teams to rebalance if they wanted to.

Dice never disappoints me. Got this in the email:

You played, and you won, soldier! Congratulations on winning access to the Battlefield Bad Company 2 closed beta on the PlayStation® 3 via the "Battlefield 1943 Play and Win" sweepstakes! For more information on the beta and all Battlefield products, please visit the Battlefield Blog.

This would be nice gesture if I owned a PS3...

Send it my way, I'd love to check it out

I played the PS3 beta for less than 3 minutes. The framerate was simply not acceptable.

I don't doubt the final version will be a different story, though I'll be playing it on the 360 instead. The stuttery beta just wasn't a good use of my precious gaming time.

I submitted this as a bug report in the closed beta forums, and it was acknowledged by the DICE rep who checks the reports.

I agree, it can get very bad at times, but after putting 26 hours into the beta so far, it seems to be hit or miss. Sometimes it runs extremely smoothly, other times I am watching a slideshow. The frustrating thing is that it seems to be completely random -- it can happen when I'm running along by myself without any action going on around me. You might want to give the beta another try based on that, but you might not. It can be headache-inducing when it gets bad.

I really hope they straighten it out for the retail product. It would be worth checking out the demo when it comes out next month to see if they've addressed it at all. The demo should reflect most/all of the changes they have implemented from the beta feedback.

The rest of the gameplay seems rock-solid, though. I'm really looking forward to it when it comes out. I haven't had this much fun with an FPS in quite a while.

I pretty much stopped playing betas years ago. I was never one to really submit bug reports anyway. It was just a free way to play games. But of course, you usually get what you pay for.

Not that I have a PS3, but even if this was on the the 360, I doubt I would mess with this as a beta. Like Legion, I have other games that I paid for, and that are finished products, that I would rather spend my time with. But this game is still high on my list of games I will buy when it comes out. I would just rather wait for the finished product.

They have plenty of time to cleanup the framerate. I'm just hoping that they will surprise us all and unveil a co-op campaign which would shoot this game right up near the top of my 2010 must buy list.

PS3 beta stats from EA/DICE -

- Total kills = 45.42M

- 9.4M kills from Vehicles

- 3.43M Vehicles Destroyed

- 380K Houses Destroyed

- 1.01M Marksman Headshots

- Total number of points awarded = 10 100 094 360

- Total number of Revives = 2.52M

- Total Repair Tool kills = 15.58K

- Total Defibrillator Kills = 12.69k

- Total Knife Kills = 1.69M

- Total C4 Kills = 730.81K

They also announced that the beta closes Dec. 21. That's a bummer because when I downloaded it last month, the file description on PSN said it would be open until Jan. 4. Also, the actual game executable says in its properties that the file won't expire until Feb. 28.

I'll PM you with it.

Got to play some today thanks to funkenpants

Somehow BF manages to feel more casual than COD and not just because the general floatyness that comes with the less responsive gameplay. Overall it looks great despite the framerate/AA issues and the game feels a lot more modern than COD thanks to the updated UI elements. It's no Battlefield 3 but it's definitely a rental on whichever is the lead sku.

Really? I have not had one stutter man.

Last night was the first time since the beta that I really noticed the screen tear issue. I thought it might have been just been the one game I joined but it seemed to follow me to two others.

I also had the honor of being killed by a dude standing atop the helicopter's blades from a few hundred feet in the air.

Jayke said: unfair to compare it to MW2, these developers finished their game.

I found that quite funny in an over exaggerated kind of way.

It's hard to be 100% sure without trying it out, but I'm pretty sure this means I won't want to play this game.

20% of the kills from vehicles sounds like standard BF gameplay. I wouldn't be surprised if an even higher percentage of kills in BF2/2142 came from vehicles. Tanks, aircraft, APCs, jeeps- all killin' machines.

If it is indeed less than previous BF games then I might be more inclined to enjoy the game.

It was getting constantly bombared by tank shells and bombs from airplanes that killed the joy for me in all the previous games.

You won't have to play with vehicles if you don't want to. There will be infantry type modes and even if there weren't, with dedicated servers you'd have lots of them to chose where vehicles are completely disabled.

Plus, I don't mind crushing your squishy little body with my tank.

True, but is it worth paying $50-$60 for a game in which half the weapons have to be disabled before the player thinks its worth playing?

So - um - this might be the game that opens up my Xbox to the wild and wooly world of MP action. The problem is, as it always is, that I don't play often enough to remain competent with the legion of gamers out there fighting in the trenches night after night. I very rarely play anything MP that isn't a board game, or L4D1/2 on PC with my step father, and the occasional GWJer.

Are folks going 360 on this one?

I really, really hope people go PC like I am. MW2 has been a lot more frustrating without a regular group to play with.
