NCAA College Football 2009 *Catch All*

Seems like I remember Alabama added last weeks opponent really late in the schedule. Not sure why they did it, but I thought it was done even after they announced moving the Iron bowl to Friday for TV.

Given this, it's not surprising that when CBS and the Southeastern Conference got together in April and opted to move the Iron Bowl up one day on Thanksgiving weekend for the next two years, Saban "really wasn't for moving the game." That was especially true after Alabama had already scheduled UT-Chattanooga for the previous weekend.

Not that it matters; just setting the record straight since I'd just read the article.

So, anyone else thing that both Bama and Florida should lose a spot for scheduled non-conference cupcakes this late in the season?

Everyone plays cupcakes. It's the way of D-1 football.

But the Gators and the Tide get +10K points for playing each other, even if it's not by choice.

Say what you will about last Saturday's opponent, but Alabama has already beaten four teams that were top 25 (two of which were top 10) when they played. By comparison, Florida has only beaten then-#4 LSU and Texas beat #20 OU and #14 OSU. Don't forget it was only two weeks prior that UT played that powerhouse from Orlando, UCF, on the same day that the Tide was beating #9 LSU. Find any strength of schedule list and I've little doubt that, of those three teams, Alabama will be on top of the list.

Or perhaps you're rooting for TCU...

Well, I do think it would be interesting to see how TCU stacks up, but mostly I don't like teams putting teams that are normally "tune up" games for the start of the year at the end. Yeah, their schedule is solid playing in the SEC and with Va Tech to start for BAMA and Florida's is definitely no slouch. Just seems a little slimy to toss in a team like Chatanooga in November. Why not grab a team from the WAC or Mountain West at least. More of those cross-conference games would give some clarity to this muddied BCS situation. How bout New Mexico, then we could have a direct comparision between Bama and TCU?

That's all I am saying

**Edit** and yes I realize that that New Mexico may be worse that Chatanooga, but I am just thinking that would at least serve a scheduling purpose.

C'mon FSU isn't that bad.

HaHa, very funny.....we shall return from the dead and give Gator fans a reason to hate us again soon enough.

Don't worry Gator fans that were paying attention in the 90's will never stop hating FSU.

Well, it's good to know someone remembers far enough back to know the Noles were once a good team

Big football weekend, the team I grew up liking, FSU, plays UF, and my current school, USF plays Miami.

Ugh, both FSU and USF get beat down.

Two more games until Saint Tebow ascends to heaven to be a fullback and wildcat QB, of course if the Gators reach the title game, I'm sure there will be a month and half of nothing but his holiness coming out of Bristol.

Oh, and take that Engineers!

If it's any condolence, the last itme ESPN gave a College team/player a gigantic, slavering BJ was USC in 2006, and we all remember how that ended.

When I dreamed of this season, I pictured us beating OSU for bowl eligibility.

An irrelevent team fired their coach today http://deadspin.com/5415437/.

Now where will I go to watch a fat turd fail at coaching? NBC just lost a viewer on Saturdays.

Just heard on the radio that Bobby Bowden will retire tomorrow.

I distinctly remember kneeling at the Bobby shrine at my buddy's apartment on Call Street before humping down to Doak Campbell. 'Tis a sad end to a distinguished career.

There are three head coaching jobs in football that no self-respecting person should want: the Oakland Raiders, the Dallas Cowboys, and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Sad. He built that program and dadgummit he's a legend.

I hope he's going because he wants to, and not because of any other reason.

Dadgummit he hasn't fielded a dominant team in a decade.

FSU has lost 44 games this decade. That's 44 losses in 10 seasons. That's pretty decent for most programs. Not for FSU, especially when the Gainesville Gators are eating everyone's lunch.

Before the 2000 season, it took Bowden's Boys 22 seasons (1978 to 1999) to rack up 45 losses.

Florida State used to be terrifying. Now, beating the Noles is like beating your 8-year-old cousin in Horse at Thanksgiving.

A decent writethru on Whither Notre Dame now that the Golden Domers kicked Weis to the curb.

The part about the AD talking about the brand really jumped out at me. The Yankees and Celtics spent boatloads to win their recent titles. Notre Dame doesn't have that advantage. I frankly see Notre Dame as more like Army or Duke -- once mighty football programs that now have a 6-6 season every so often.

The story, sadly, doesn't mention Notre Dame's sorry schedule. The 91-68 record in the post-Holtz era against the service academies, the Big Ten and other random suckers is an embarrassment and goes much, much deeper than Weis' inability to coach a college football team.

Wow, and how is football in North Carolina these days?

How are you going to take a shot at Bowden when he is retiring? Classy.

College football is better for him having coached at FSU, and he his career numbers show the quality of his coaching.

Enjoy your retirement Bobby, you earned it.

Whoa, there, hoss.

I'm not disputing Bowden's legacy. His FSU teams of the late 80s and during the 1990s were truly terrifying. Fourteen straight years of 10+ wins is an awesome accomplishment. They were the gold standard of the ACC. I still remember when Virginia stopped Warrick Dunn at the goal line to hand the Noles their first ACC loss. That was huge because FSU appeared invincible.

Now? Meh. FSU has won 10 games just once in the past nine seasons. Florida is absolutely killing them. Miami is showing signs of life again. Throw USF into the mix, and all of a sudden Florida State is the fourth-best football team in the state.

Maybe even worse, beating Florida State isn't the big deal it once was. Even losing by 3 is seen as a loss and not as a oh-we-came-so-close.

Rightly or wrongly, the past decade falls squarely on Bowden's shoulders, too. And the numbers just aren't that great.

Yeah, that's kind of why the whole retirement conversation.

Noone can argue that they have fallen off. It has pretty much forced his retirement, but Bobby built a monster that has eaten him alive.

Not the news I want to be reading a few days before the biggest game of the season. UF junior DE Carlos Dunlap charged for DUI.

Dunlap, a 6-foot-6, 290-pound defensive end who is considered a potential first-round draft choice if he leaves Florida after this season, has 35 tackles, including 8½ tackles for loss, and is tied for the team lead with seven sacks. He was named MVP of the 2009 FedEx BCS National Championship Game

Ducks heading to the Rose Bowl!
I had to sit here studying for finals instead of going to the game, but it looked like a close game all the way.
Now to find tickets to the Rose Bowl somehow...

Scaphism, you a Eugenian? I'm across the river in Springtucky.

Crazy game, but so sweet to beat the rodents to lock up the Rose Bowl berth. This is how rivalry games are supposed to be. Go Ducks!

Law student at UO. The Ducks kept a lot of games close and interesting, this was no exception. Are your neighbors setting off fireworks too?

So Mangino is finally out.

Of the names that have been proposed to replace him, the one I think has the most upside would be Phil Fulmer. I thought he got a raw deal when Tennessee fired him. Is there something else to his story that would make him a risky hire. He seems like hte big name Kansas needs to continue to grow their program. My suspicion is the money will not be an issue.

Jayhawker wrote:

Wither Baby Mangino?

That was an exciting Civil War but frustrating as I'm not used to Oregon State being the better team that then loses. In almost all aspects of the game Oregon State was better but Oregon could stretch to the sidelines and just kill OR ST. As I was watching I realized I didn't have a good solution to scream at the television for how to stop the sideline to sideline game. Perhaps somebody with more football knowledge could explain how you stop that?

A raw deal? LOL did you see his last years at UT? I did and it wasn't pretty. His coaching methods are old, tired, and entirely too predictable. They let him stay on about 2 years longer than they needed to because he's a legend around here. I'm so thankful they finally did give him the boot though.
