I'll start off the thread with my most recent piece. This is a gift I made for hubby:

- Approximately 30,160 Perler beads
- 44 inches by 24.5 inches (111.8 cm X 62.2 cm)

Lastly, a quick question. I bought a Brother sewing machine recently. At first, I was only going to use it to tailor my own clothes but now I'd like to expand my horizons. What I'm looking for right now is a good beginner's guide. I'd like to know more about the many types of fabric, what the different stitches are for, how to take measurements, what fabric to use for any given project and so on. Any assistance would be appreciated!

How long did that take you?

Damn, Mystic. If you weren't already married, I think they'd be lining up ten deep after seeing that.

OMG, you are my new god! I didn't have one before, but you're it now.

That's awesome MV!

My mom made this for me when I was about 15 or so, it's cross-stitched.

I still love that Perler Bead mural, although I did expect to see Kanye blip in and out of it...

Here's a cross-stitch I did for our new house. It's just larger than 8 x 11, and it's pretty simple: Just a simple cross stitch for entire thing, no fancy embroidery or anything.

IMAGE(http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/9846/crossstitch.jpg)

Still have yet to frame it, though. Next project may be a sampler using the Futurama alien alphabets.

Re: Sewing -- I found that the instruction booklet that comes with your machine is actually a pretty good guide to the different stitches and how-to's that go with sewing, but I'm still hunting for a good set of easy patterns. Local craft stores have plenty of patterns and fabric, but it's quite a bit to wade through when you don't know what you're doing!

I picked up Chic and Simple Sewing, and while the patterns looked nice at first, upon further inspection many aren't even close to realistic for my body type (about half are some variation of the 60's mod shift dress, which, for someone with boobs and hips, is a total joke). If you find a better beginner's guide to sewing, please, let me know too!

Ooh, a crafts thread, I can't resist.

Here's a cross-stitch (though only half stitches since the detail was so tiny) of our wedding portrait that I made for my parents. It's funny, this is a photo, scanned, turned into cross-stitch, and then photographed again.

And my most recent jewelry design I was working on until 3am last night:
IMAGE(http://hphotos-snc3.fbcdn.net/hs080.snc3/14743_177618944682_111168939682_2693795_4850390_n.jpg)

That photo looks so photo-ish - the threads must be tiny!
Nice necklace!

If my memory is correct, it's on 32count linen with single thread half-stitches. I'm not insane enough to do anything like that again!

Thanks!

Dear lord, Yellek, that's one hell of a commitment to a cross-stitch pattern. I hope your parents appreciated it.

Also, I want your necklace.

I started sometime in June and finished at the end of September.

On the one hand, your mom is really cool! On the other hand, my immediate thought after seeing the image was this. Now it's stuck in my head!

I have no idea what a simple cross stitch is but I love it. It's perfect for a gamer's home. The subject is obvious to those who recognize it and to those who don't know, it doesn't scream "VIDEO GAMES" from the heavens.

RE: SEWING

Thanks for the advice. RTFM will be first on my agenda! Once of my favorite pasttimes is walking into a book store and searching through the arts and crafts section. I can spend an hour trying to find the perfect book for the subject I'm interested in. It still surprises me how many terrible art books exist in these stores. I'll definitely search for a perfect sewing book when I get the chance.

Do you happen to have a photo of it in-progress or a way to explain the technique? It really does look like a photo!

I saw it first!

I used PCStitch5 to convert the image to a pattern that could tell me what thread colors to use and give me a grid pattern to follow. I don't have an in-progress for that one, but here's the original photo:

Here's one I was doing for my brother and his fiance, that I never finished before they split up, so you can see an in-progress example. I really should finish this one sometime.

It is for sale, and I do custom orders... Any color you want for $60.

Is it listed on your site yet?

That's all pretty amazing.

Nope, I just finished it at 3am! I'm behind on getting my new designs up there.

**edit: Full-service shopping at my first link in my sig. Recent designs are on my facebook link.

Wow. Seeing all of these makes me want to get to work on my own projects.

I just realized that I don't have any photos of stuff I'm made on my wood lathe. Here's a quick photo of the only thing I have on hand, everything else has been gifted away. I just fired off a quick handheld shot so the depth of field is rather shallow.

This reminds me that I need to get crackin'. I think I'm going to make my parents a pepper mill for Christmas this year.

Holy crap, Yellek. That's amazing.
Makes me sad that I left all of my projects back in Idaho.

This stuff is amazing. Kudos guys.

LiquidMantis, that's a gorgeous piece. I find it hard to believe that could be done at home, it looks so professional.

A scarf I'm making for my daughter (in progress):

Thanks! I wish I had taken photos of the other stuff I've made, mostly more pens and some decorative wine stoppers. I haven't yet braved bowl making as I need to get a few new gouges first.

I browsed around on your site and you've got some really nice stuff. It's amazing that you can sell it so inexpensively. Don't be surprised to be shipping some to Golden, CO here shortly.

Don`t you dare, it`s awesome as it is.

I am realizing that my own crafts exploits don't go further than papercraft animals made using Canon's blueprints. But when it comes to my wife... She sews, embroiders, crochets, quilts, and makes artisan cakes and pies. Will select better pics once I am home tonight.

Here's a drawing I made a few years ago.

There's a few other pieces I'm proud of in the same web album.

Indeed. Your hubby is one lucky bastard.

I may have posted these on GWJ before - me, the wife and a buddy did them a couple of years ago.

Heh, it kinda looks like the world is dissolving around them.

Well, some of my wife's work:

Yellek your stuff is fantastic. I am very impressed with your detail, especially your chain mail necklaces.

You could quite easily triple the price you're asking for on those things and they'd still be well worth it.

(but please don't do that till after I get some Christmas stuff :))
