True, but you're also getting a hobbled version of the game that doesn't include any of the cool equipment that was subscriber-only. I take your point, but I think $30 (even in canadian dollars) is a bit much for what you get. Of course, that is Best Buy's problem, not Hanbitsoft or Namco or anyone else, and probably a discussion for another thread anyway.

What was my point again? @_@

The price is especially bad since I bought it for 20$ at an EB games outside Vancouver.

I wonder if any unofficial HGL fan communities will be able to resurrect the unreleased content as a mod or patch for the singleplayer campaign. For subscribers were the paid content additions also available in the singleplayer campaign?

Nope. Subscriber-only content was online-only as well.

No.. the subscriber-only content was online only. It would be cool if someone could somehow get that stuff and release it for singleplayer... I somehow think that Flagship wouldn't be very litigious about protecting the IP.

Hanbitsoft might.

I never knew Namco cared so much about my well being.

Cool. That's all I was hoping for. If I can clear others in my pile, I'll install Hellgate on my PC again sometime. I enjoyed it when it first came out, but school and time constraints prevented me from delving too deep.

Thanks for the heads-up.

I've been playing Borderlands quite a lot these past few days and I saw you were playing Hellgate on Steam today and I felt like re-installing it. I read a bit about this user created patch and it seems really good! Are there any plans of someone releasing a multiplayer patch for it? It's a shame the game never shipped with LAN support...

Honestly, with Borderlands out, I don't see why people would still want to play HGL. While the settings are understandably different, the actual combat is just orders of magnitude more satisfying in Borderlands, and the loot more impactful.

Good to see the fans working on it. I'm one of those idiots that bought Collector's Edition and the Lifetime account, played for a few weeks, and shelved it thinking I'd be able to come back to it whenever I wanted. Still a bit of impotent rage tied to that purchasing decision.

Yeah I'm in the same boat, jumped on board for a lifetime account hopeful for many future patches.

The creators for the SP patch are planning on making a LAN modification but will probably be at least a year till it is out.

The ranged combat is definitely more satisfying in Borderlands, but I like the melee and pets better in Hellgate. I also like the skill tree options in Hellgate more. Borderlands is overall a much better game and I'll probably have fun with it for years to come, but I am glad Hellgate is getting some fan treatment.

I still like HGL, and while Borderlands is definitely the better game, there's still gameplay in HGL you can't quite get in Borderlands, primarily with the magic-users.

And I can't afford Borderlands

Thanks for posting this and reviving the thread - caused me to pull out my Hellgate disc and reinstall to try it out. Between this and Borderlands, I'm having a ball!

All these fixes look really good, and it looks like they did a great, thorough job... but Hellgate just wasn't very fun to me. I don't think these fixes will change that.

And yes, I was a lifetime subscriber. Blind hope makes you do dumb things.

Geez man, waste your blind hope on stuff like dating, not on the important things in life!

I still have high hopes for the universe. And I tend to think that our lifetime subs at least got us some good karma for supporting the devs.

Bill Roper would disagree. He never answered my very polite e-mail.

Hehe, I am sure he didn't even read it, since I am sure he got TONs of "fan" mail over HGL.

Honestly though, I am pissed with the publishers... Actually, not pissed, but frustrated. I am frustrated that somehow the Korean publishers got the rights to the game, and we are left out in the cold.

In my opinion, this is worse than HGL being shut down completely. It feels like we have paid extra to be "made fun" of.

I'm a little frustrated that they pretty much sold everything down to the copper wiring in the walls and made just enough money to keep the executives in the industry, to hell with the rest of the team. In other words, it is offensive to my naive sense of justice that Bill Roper and co. could go on to keep making games while other people lost their jobs due to their decisions.

I guess that's business, though. I'm sure someone will be able to dig up a story about the Hellgate execs doing good by their guys in the last days.

I thought everyone was rehired to work on Torchlight?

lethial wrote:

See, there we go.

Very few folks started Runic. I think the Schaeffers and the few that were already up at Flagship Seattle.

I kind of HGL!

There's something to be said for hiring failed executives, as they understand that failure is possible and what leads to it.

Some say that the reason Silicon Valley happened in California instead of some other country is because in other countries bankruptcy shames you out of ever being a leader again, while in California it was a badge of honor. Many a successful hi-tech company is led by a former failure.

There something to be said for having a strong executive team that has experienced a great deal of ups and downs..
