Locked threads: The forbidden fruit

As far as band names go Im going to have to give the nod to "Drowning in Cleveland". It's a bit emo but rolls off the tongue.

"Burning to Death in Cleveland" just doesn't have the same flow.

"I Got Burned in Cleveland" might have some merit though...

Is Certis proclaiming that he himself is a Parisian dandy, or is he infering Clem is¿

Regardless, I'm entertained.

I can't even remember the number of times I've stopped short of hitting the post comment button because I realized it was a thread in Cleveland.

Aside from locks, I'm always dying to know what deleted posts held. :)

I'm always dying to know what Certis does when people impersonate his edits ;)

I think the post was never edited.

Every single time, definitely. I try to pinpoint the exact moment when the thread starts to get 'overexcited' and boards the train to Cleveland.

could someone please explain this Cleveland expression and where it comes from?
I had never heard of it until this week and now it seems I'm hearing it all over the place!

It's in the GWJ Commandments as "Where 'Cleveland' Comes From."

I have to look especially if I skimmed the thread previously. My first thought is usually "What the hell happened? I was just in there an hour ago!"

Ironically enough I went back to the topic list after reading this thread, only to see that the Pixar thread was locked. As I kept reading the new posts in there I couldn't figure how it could have been locked, until I got to the last few. I am still not sure it wasn't locked a little too early. I mean sure, the train was rattling a lot, but it hadn't completely derailed and I was enjoying it

[edit: I thought I should make sure I was talking about enjoying the Pixar-Star Wars-Get off my lawn parts of the thread, not the obstacle that knocked it off the track]

Tell us, oh wise wordsmythe, where does the term "filthy skimmer" come from?

Thanks for the tip. I almost missed that one

Mods here typically take a "better safe than sorry" approach to pruning -- sometimes even cutting threads that had already righted themselves by the time they get to it.

It's a far more acceptable thing than having rampant derails, though, and as a mod on other boards I understand all too well the exhaustion of the unpaid work of forum moderation.

It's hard to do over the internet, but it's more Clevageland than Cleveland. Or Drowning in Oogaba if you like. You guys can't see tshirts or hear the emphasis on Cleeeveland. :p

Aha! That's why you're always trying to keep us on topic!

I'm not a moderator on other forums but I've been known to cause a good deal of trouble in the past. I'm always on my best behavior when I visit GWJ. When I'm angry and want to make 13 year olds cry I post on gamefaqs.

You know, there's alot of Michigan peeps I'm starting to notice. We need to have our own slap 'n tickle one of these days.

Not sure. I think I skimmed that thread.

(That's what I get for opening tabs in the background.)

I haven't laughed this hard since the gaming on the toilet discussion during the GWJ Conference Call.

Oh, that's clever

edit - Concur with Ratboy, because that was also great, but damn this thread moves fast >.>

I wasn't before, but now I'm addicted to reading locked threads. Thanks!

I'm one of those people who needs to check out a locked thread. Sad thing is, half the time a bunch of things have been said that I really, really wish I could respond to. Of course, making a new thread would be out of the question because the initial thread was locked specifically due to the things I want to reply to.

Also, when I've participated in a locked thread, I always feel really bad. Especially that Pixar thread that got locked recently. That was totally my fault and I feel extremely terrible about it. I let my love of extreme hyperbole and my complete lack of finding anything offensive get away from me and stepped way over a line. Thankfully, Certis was nice enough to send me a private message basically outlining the problem and asking me to tone it down, which I'm happy to do, especially since the last thing I want to do is upset anyone here. I think it's awesome that he'd actually do that. Most people at most other places won't do that. This place and all the people here are too awesome, except for Burnt Toast, who is a jerk. Nothing would make me sadder than to show up to find I've been locked out, especially if I can't figure out why or for how long.

Not to get too mushy or personal or any of that garbage, just having this place to waste time at has been helpful in getting through some pretty crappy times. Just wanted to say thanks for everything, sorry for some things, and when I can afford it I'm making a donation whether or not the donation drive is going, and you're going to like it whether you like it or not!

Also, if this ended up derailing the thread until it eventually got locked, I'd laugh. Hard.

Updated list of Forbidden Fruit:
Apples
Bananas
Cherries
Melons
Strawberries (when coated with chocolate)
Out of control GWJ threads

Can this thread be cited as evidence that GWJ is a fruit, not a vegetable?

Melons?

*eats passion fruit*

On topic, yeah I like to sneak a peek at the locked threads. As someone who hasn't been here that long I think I'd agree with other who've said it helps you gauge what will and won't fly...

Mmmm, forbidden donut.

dammit. I wanted to post this exact phrase.

I'm just gonna claim you tannhauser'ed me anyway.

That was classy, MechaSlinky. I'm always impressed when people own up to their mistakes.

I can feel it...

I'm less of a locked thread voyeur, and more of finding out why people became fired. True, the two phenomena often intersect, but its the vicarious "take THAT internet" that tickles my funny bone.

Locked threads are pretty cool. Every time I read them I feel like I'm breaking and entering.

I'll check out a thread that's been locked, if only to see what straw broke the camel's back.

Looks like I just found out

Check out my shiny new tag!

Certis does not take kindly to sass mouths!

Wow, that's worth a picture.
