Epic Mickey Catch-All

I can't believe that it's just about painting. The painting mechanic's got to be like star Female Doggoes in Super Mario Galaxy.

The Epic gameplay supposedly involves "[painting] your way through levels using the Wii Remote" by "drawing, etching and erasing whole or parts of levels as you go."

Disney has so far been tight-lipped on details of the game, saying only that it is "very encouraged" by Junction Point's work.

Ok, now I'm not so excited anymore. It sounds kinda boring. Why would they take something this cool looking and turn it into a gimmicky Wii exclusive title? Ugh.

Sounds like Okami to me. Why is it Wii exclusive? It's the market leader.

This sh*t's about to get real.

All I can say is thank goodness it's a Wii exclusive. With all the titles filling up my backlog, it's good to know that this upcoming one can be safely dismissed entirely.

I'm glad I'm not the only one thinking that.

Quick question for Podunk and kuddles: What is about this game that makes you not want to play it? Is it just because it's on the Wii and you don't like the console period, or is it that you do not already own the console it's going to be released on?

I'm confused because sometimes people say they wish they had games they want to play on the Wii, one is announced (or pre-announced in this case) and then say, they wish it was on another platform because they really want to play it.

*Certisisawesome*I'm not trying to turn this into a consoel war or anything at all.

I'm not a 360 or PS3 owner so I'm excited to check this out whenever it does release.

To me, the whole painting thing sounds really lame. Of course we don't really know anything much about it yet, but I'm already imagining where they might go with it, and none of it seems terribly interesting. I wanna play something along the lines of American McGee's Alice, but made by Warren Spector using Disney characters. Not some little kiddie game where it's like walking around inside a giant coloring book.

I'm sorry, it's just so hard to have faith in games not sucking nowadays

Ya that idea turn me off too. But I think Warren Spector deserves our faith with his past projects.

did Okami turn you off?

Kind of the first one, but not quite. I like my Wii, but I've also come to terms with what it is: a "casual" system. EA Sports Active has served as a nice compliment for days I don't go to the gym, and pulling out Boom Blox, Wii Play, Excite Truck once in a while is a fun diversion. But quite frankly, I'm tired of the "can hardcore games succeed on the Wii?" navel gazing that has been going on for years now, most recently with The Conduit, because the answer has been a strong "No" for quite some time and I wish we just moved on and accepted that.

You're making a great comparison with Okami because it sums up the two possibilities that I see this game achieving. Chances are it's going to be far more simplistic, essentially a painting game where you just frantically rub everything on the screen and being a wasteful experience - a childish minigame in the disguise of something more. Or it will be just like Okami, in which case I will tire of having to play an epic adventure squeezed into a limited graphical machine and shoehorned into a control scheme that - at best - will be somewhat awkward and annoying and will not be appealing if you try to play it for more than half an hour at a time. It's just not the type of game the machine was made for. Even something like Super Mario Galaxy, which is a rare exception to begin with, succeeded despite the Wii controls, not because of them, and would have worked just as well if not better with a Gamecube controller. Okami is another one where a clumsy pointing system, a confinement to one analog stick, and the annoyance that comes from trying to get the game to properly register the straight line I just drew is not conductive to a 40-hour gaming experience, and made me wish I had purchased it on the PS2, although I readily admit I probably never would have finished it there either.

At the risk of coming off as boastful, I have a PS3, a 360 and a gaming PC. The amount of amazing full fledged games available to me is already overwhelming, so I have no desire to settle for one that is "great, for a Wii game." I'll stick to Wii Sports Resort.

I'm being cautious about this one. As awesome as that art is, I don't think any of the systems would be able to properly convey those images without some cutbacks here and there. If they play it smart they probably could get the game to look great, but it won't be easy to pull off. It's one of those wait and see moments.

The gameplay they describe also sounds like it could be fun, but again that would depend on how they handle it. I think it's too early to dismiss it as gimmicky, but it's also too early to call it jaw dropping awesome as well

I dunno, I always really loved the sinister feel of that game. I thought he really nailed the perfect dark interpretation of the whole Alice in Wonderland thing. Plus, I'd give a testicle to have a voice just like the Cheshire Cat in that game Best voice EVAR.

The Wii has a surprising amount of muscle. We're used to seeing junky crap on it, but it's quite a capable little unit. Don't dismiss this game because it's designed for that platform first -- it could still be amazing.

Oh, and, edit to add:

Consider your face slapped with a white glove, sir. Okami was wonderful, one of the best games I've ever played. Choose the weapon, and we shall meet at dawn.

After criticizing Okami that way, I don't think you're seeing the games as they are, I think you're seeing them through a lens of preconception. You expect Wii games to suck, so that's what you experience, regardless of the merits of the actual game.

One point where I would agree with you: they made the drawing of straight lines too hard on the Wii. They needed to modify the algorithm a little, because it wasn't on the PS2's thumbsticks anymore. But in every other respect, it was superior to the PS2 original.

That also means you're really criticizing a PS2 game, not a Wii game.

Seeing as how my entire point was the exact opposite of that, I don't see how you made that conclusion.

Officially announced.

Should we give the game a proper thread or mutate this one?

If Sinitar will edit his post I think it'd be nice to keep it here.

I know it was talked about previously likely being a Wii game, do we know if it is a Wii exclusive?

This could make me buy a Wii. Honestly. And I've had no interest in a Wii recently.

That Stratocaster he plays at about 2:40 in the video? DO WANT.

demonbox wrote:

The original GI online "cover" only listed it as a Wii exclusive, but they've edited those details off of the current image on the site, so who knows.

Either way, Warren Spector's involvement turns this into an easy pick-up for me, Wii-exclusive or not. I'm interested in good games, no matter where they're at, and the absolutely insane art we've seen so far (as well as Spector's reputation) makes Epic Mickey seem very promising.

I dunno, with Sony working on their motion-controller and Microsoft preparing Natal I could easily see Disney saying to themselves at some point: Let's port this and upgrade the graphics.

I don't mean this in any offensive sort of way but I just can't stand the Wii. I admit to having not alot of experience playing games on it but for the most part I find the whole motion control contrived, sloppy, and irritating. I prefer the sixaxis on the PS3 to the crap that alot of wii games do. The only game I've had a moderate amount of fun playing on the Wii was Punch Out and that was because it didn't use the motion control very much.

My buddies were all bragging about Wii play or Wii sports or both and they are having these pitched boxing matches and whatnot. When it is my turn I literally just waggle the remote around like I'm having a seizure and I have a decent chance of winning.

I see the gimmick in the wii and I know alot of people enjoy it but it just doesn't do it for me. The wii is just not on my radar. I have no desire to own one and I probably wouldn't buy one for $100 because I know I'd never use it.

So when I hear "wii exclusive" my brain sort of shuts off. Could it be a good game? Sure! It could be wonderful but it still isn't going to sell me on a platform that I fundamentally don't enjoy.

It isn't that I think the wii sucks so much that it doesn't do it for me personally. So I won't be surprised when the game gets hyped but the reverse is also true. Don't be surprised if I'm NOT hyped because it is a wii game.

Or maybe I just hate fun.

We expressed surprise and amazement at how someone could make a licensed Disney game about horrific robot monsters and other abominations made worse by their relation to beloved childhood icons.

Apparently, they can't.

On the plus side, at least Spector wants to make this a trilogy (I love it when they announce a trilogy before the first game's even close to done).

Worked for Square, I guess.

Sad panda.

Yet another argument for a severe reduction of copyright term limits (or better yet, abolition). I want to see the game Warren Specter actually wants to make.

He still could make that game if he'd just abandon the Disney part of it.

Oh please oh please...

When I see concept art I don't automatically assume everything will be used. It's hardly news or surprising.

It's still a game from Mr. Spector, the art design still looks to be a big part of the game, and I'll still kick ass with the mouse.

Some of the back tracking seems to stem from the capabilities of the Wii. Those new screenshots look like they came from a Wii game, while the earlier concept stuff looked like it was beyond the Wii's capability. So that doesn't matter as much to me.

The real key is in how compelling the story and gameplay will be. I have a Wii, and will give Spector the benefit of the doubt. But the Wii is far from my platform of choice, and it may have a hard time getting past that. I even picked up the Gamecube version of Twilight Princess, just to play the game with a controller instead of the Wiimote.

I was thinking, time to borrow my mom's Wii for a bit.
