Don't really know if this has been in another thread. Just making sure everyone know about it.

No way! Thats fantastic. I hope you will all forgive my heresy for playing it without a joystick though.

How is it downloaded and installed?

There has been discussion about this in the other Mechwarrior thread, but it probably deserves it's own. May deserve a mention in the video game deals thread as well. Hard to find a better deal than free.

It's not... yet. I don't think they've announced a date when it will be available, just that it will be at some point in the future.

Still, I'm very excited about this, since I never played MW4. I don't recall why, probably because my system couldn't handle it back then, but I played the crap out of MW3.

Anyone know if that fan made, massive multiplayer mod for mercenaries is still running? I always wanted to try it but could never get a copy of Mercs. Now might be the perfect time.

Yeah, no date yet. The major announcement has been something along the lines of "We will release it, soon."

Soon can't come soon enough. As a Gamer Between Jobs I'm in love with free games.

Also the "new" mechwarrior thread has brought up the fact MechCommander games are available for free as well. I've been playing MC2 for the last couple of days and loving it. A quick note though, It's not as simple as downloading an .exe and installing. You'll have to find a way to mount the ISO.

MC2 was great. I beat the whole thing twice. But afterwards I had trouble playing the first one. It just seemed to ackward and sloggy without the improvements of the second. Though I mist have replayed the very first mission about 5 times just so I could loot the mad cat

You might find that site's installation instructions to be helpful with this.

Update on this. A countdown appeared at MekTek and everyone assumed they were finally releasing Mechwarrior 4, but it was actually for an unofficial remake of Mechwarrior 2. In other words, they still haven't released the goddamn game, even though they solicited donations to upgrade their servers for it. I hope it's not too dramatic to say they've held this "free" game hostage for about 4 months now, demanding a tribute in new computer hardware.

I love you Lobster: your rage warms my cold cold soul.

God damn them! GIVE ME EVERYTHING FOR FREE AND RIGHT NOW YOU JERKS!

This thread is always such a d*ck tease when it pops up on the front page!

I'd take the remake of MW2 over MW4.

I admit that I'm nerd raging, and furthermore nerd raging over nothing since I have the game on disc. But I enjoy my nerd rage and so does Nightmare!

That said, I don't think it's being unreasonably impatient when I think 4 months is enough time for them to get their stuff in order. They don't owe me anything but they don't have to tease, you know?

I'm actually relieved that it isn't out yet. I've just moved, and don't have broadband for another week (at my mother-in-law's at the moment, for no reason other than bandwidth thievery). Furthermore, there are too many games to play at the moment, and I would probably not devote the time that MW4 deserves as a result of "new and shiny" syndrome.

Both are very subjective problems, but, y'know, screw everyone else

Damn, another "Rat Boy's in my head" post.

Yeah, I saw that "everyone assumed they were finally releasing Mechwarrior 4, but it was actually for an unofficial remake of Mechwarrior 2" line and thought, "hey, even better".

It's not cool, though, to promise something, whore for donations to help make it happen, and then go completely dark on the subject. I understand the nerd rage.

I would rather have a Mechwarrior 2 remake as well, because everyone here seems to like that one a lot better than 4.

Also I broke and got a copy of 4 a couple weeks ago. Stuck on the last level of Vengeance so far. I got through the first half of the mission with a very long range Atlas build, but then the final enemy has a long range build-out as well, so now I'm going to try to go completely short-range and see if that does me any better.

Technically, they asked for donations to help their servers. Considering some of the odd donation drives I've seen on the internet (fly Gabe Newell to Australia so he can play a mod made by some guy we've never heard of!) I have a little trouble getting mad at them over that.

If it never comes out, then yeah, they were dicks for saying it would. If they need a year or three to patch it up for modern systems and get the last of the legal issues worked out - which is what they claim is holding up the process - then well, at least someone put it out eventually. Which is more than you can say for the people that are holding onto the rights of most other games. Of course, I may be biased because I wasn't dumb enough to donate to their server (or to the Fly Gabe Newell fund.)

I would take a MW2 remake over 4 as well, though the "hardcore" or "NetMech" mods pretty much put that simulation aspect into MW4.

Pretty much, it's whatever the leagues choose as their battle resolution game is what I'm going for.

Or maybe I'll just hurry up, become a working man, and buy/make a bunch of these: http://media.photobucket.com/image/t...

Dammit, you're all in my head! Get out of here, there's no room left for the voices!

Yea, sucks that they're pushing off MW4 for a remake of MW2, but I'm not so worried about that. I have much fonder memories of the latter, and a good, high res remake would be outstanding. Plus, I too have a copy of MW4 around here.. somewhere.. I think.

Sweet googly-moogly!

As it often does this thread drew my attention to MekTek.net. Last week they posted that they'll soon be meeting with some of the major rights holders in the franchise. They also posted this little tidbit.

MekTek.net wrote:

Pending success with Smith and Tinker Inc., MekTek will be releasing the free version of Mechwarrior4 shortly there after. Not only has time been a factor in preparing the free release, but monetary resources as well. Studio MekTek Inc. was required to purchase hefty software distribution insurance @ $4500 for the royalty free distribution. Our partners from Catalyst Game Labs and Virtual World Entertainment are helping Studio MekTek Inc. pay for about half of the insurance bill. The trip to Seattle will also exceed $1500, all of which is being paid for by staff out of our own pockets.

Software distribution insurance? I'd never heard of such a thing. What would a software distributor have to insure against?

No idea, all of these complications are making me more and more curious as to why they didn't torrent this. Even if you are trying to tie this together with some sort of client you should be able to include the client install in the torrent file, have the Mechwarrior install also install this client, you could even require the client to run when you run Mechwarrior, like Steam.

Then buy a DSL connection to devote to continuously uploading the package to keep the torrent alive. Then watch as the magic of peer-to-peer downloading gets your data through your DSL pipeline, to millions of users, within a day or two.

Or better yet, maybe they shouldn't have told everyone they were going to give the game out for free if they couldn't afford the paperwork.

This sounds like fraud to me. I'm not talking about nerd rage at this point, I'm talking about soliciting donations under false pretenses.

That's the software equivalent to automotive undercoating.

With a higher resolution intro. God did I love that intro back in the day...

Most recent update from MekTek... Hopefully by Thanksgiving...

Regarding Mechwarrior4 FREE Release Status

Regarding Mechwarrior4 FREE Release Status

The Mechwarrior4 FREE release is still currently to be announced. MekTek had hoped to gain permission for the release while visiting Smith and Tinker, Inc. in Seattle this week. However, we have learned that Microsoft has endured several administrative changes which currently impede the release. The good news, however, is that a meeting to finalize the release is scheduled near the American Thanks Giving Holiday. Smith and Tinker said that it will only take 1-2 more days before permission is granted. From MekTek, we are happy to report that the release is ready and awaiting permission to push that big shiny green release button at MekTek headquarters.

Mechwarrior 2 was one of the first games I upgraded my system to play (I believe it was the video card. Prior to this, I had only really upgraded for a game to get the most out of Wing Commander - that is, the WC1).

I am among the "feeling burned" camp - but there's no question that an updated Mechwarrior 2 would be something I (try to) download on day 1!

Mechwarrior 2 had the first intro I remember being completely floored by, just open-mouthed at the awesome. I played that movie so many times. I had an early "computer sound system", not knowing how bad they were, and my wimpy little subwoofer got a real workout from that thing.

I remember observing to my friends that someday, we'd be able to play with graphics that good in a real game.

I don't remember the game itself very well anymore, though, just the intro.

I would think you'd have that "feeling burned" sensation almost all of the time Burnt Toast.

MW2 intro nostalgia.

It ran faster if you copied all the movies to the HD. But it took like 100mb, a pretty sizable chunk of my 750 mb drive.

edit: youtube link contains hyphen, which apparently doesn't like the youtube tag.

You really do get used to the smell after a while, though.
