Yeah, I'm not about to get a gmail account anytime soon, but think this is a cool idea.

Can someone add me to Calgary, Alberta Canada? I'll name drop others from town here if they don't add. I refuse to believe there are more goodjers in Edmonton.

I know of 6 off the top of my head.

I really don't know what you guys think "Midwest" means. Would it help if I told you it's roughly a triangle between St. Louis, Minneapolis and Cleveland?

I prefer Great Lakes over Midwest. But Officially neither is correct.

By the way, the number of markers now spans 2 pages, so if you don't see your newly-added marker by clicking the link in the OP, go to the next page.

First South Dakotan who tells me he's a Midwesterner gets a punch in the neck.

So what is he? Canadian?

I wouldn't argue with that, but I tend to refer to that area as The Plains (or The Wasteland).

No thats North Dakota.

I never understood how a section geographically on the east half could be called midwest.

From Wikipedia:

Wikipedia wrote:

As this region lies mostly in the eastern half of the United States, the term "Midwest" can be misleading if one does not understand American history.

The term West was applied to the region in the early years of the country. In 1789, the Northwest Ordinance was enacted, creating the Northwest Territory, which was bounded by the Great Lakes and the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers. Because the Northwest Territory lay between the East Coast and the then-far-West, the states carved out of it were called the "Northwest". In the early 19th century, anything west of the Mississippi River was considered the West, and the Midwest was the region east of the Mississippi and west of the Appalachians. In time, some users began to include Minnesota, Iowa and Missouri in the Midwest. With the settlement of the western prairie, the new term Great Plains States was used for the row of states from North Dakota to Kansas. Later, these states also came to be considered Midwest by some.

The states of the "old Northwest" are now called the "East North Central States" by the United States Census Bureau and the "Great Lakes" region by some of its inhabitants, whereas the states just west of the Mississippi and the Great Plains states are called the "West North Central States" by the Census Bureau. Today people as far west as the prairie sections of Colorado, Wyoming, and Montana sometimes identify themselves with the term Midwest.[7] Some parts of the Midwest are still referred to as "Northwest" for historical reasons – for example, Minnesota-based Northwest Airlines and Northwestern University in Illinois – so the Northwest region of the country is called the "Pacific Northwest" to make a clear distinction.

That's right, Yellek, Wikipedia is totally calling you out for not understanding American history.

That's fine, I hated History class.

I did know this came about from history, but I still don't like it.

I dont understand why people still use other email clients than gmail. I used to be in the old hotmail system, but once I converted, I will never go back.

we need a poll!

This is why I mentioned the second page of markers. That's like, the 4th Calgary, AB marker for Zablocki19 that's been added.

I apologize, I thought it would be showing all the markers at once.

The same goes for anyone in D.C. who says they live in the South. WTF?

Geography FAIL.

Some of the markers are not able to be edited (Cleveland, OH). Please check that you've followed the directions if you were the first person in a city and no one has joined you.

I don't even see a marker for Cleveland, OH.

Regardless, your issue may be that you're on the second page of markers and trying to edit a marker listed on the first page. Go back to the first page and try to edit again.

Yeah. I don't see a marker for Cleveland, either. Could it be coming from another map of yours, RedJen?

I feel sorry for anyone living in Cleveland. Also I would like to thank the OP for this idea. Now I can plot my revenge on a map!

Hey champ, the South starts at the Mason-Dixon line, which is Maryland's northern border.

Hmmm. This thread has taught me (as a European) that the mid-west must indeed be placed somewhere else than the geographical mid-west of the U.S...

Woohoo, I learned something new today!

Though to be fair, it was not a member of the Confederacy so some people consider it The South, others do not.

Their neutrality sickens me...

Tell that to someone in Northern VA and Maryland. Having grown up in Northern VA, I certainly didn't consider myself Southern. You can't even get sweet tea in a restaurant in Northern VA!

The Sweet Tea Line governs North and South for me. Mason & Dixon was a great book, but their line predates this country.

I'm in. Go Bay Area crowd!

There's a massive mistake in that Richmond, VA is not included in the South and any native would strike that man dead for it. I'd say that line would should pass somewhere just south of Fredericksburg, VA (maybe through it) based on my experience.

Also, see my post just above yours.

Well, Richmond did lose the war, after all.

As for never considering yourself Southern: Vancouver, Montreal, Toronto and Saskatoon may all be culturally distinct, but they're all Canada to me.

It may have been an easier decision if the Union army wasn't already there.

No, I think they made the decision much easier.
