Borderlands (catch all)

Two DLC packs have already been confirmed to be released some time "shortly" after game release.

Personally I'm not even brining HGL in to draw the connection that both suck, rather I would love to see a game which did some of the same as HGL did, just without the sucky parts

DLC, if done right, is a great, and certainly much better than subscriptions, model for A-RPGs imo.
New classes/areas/bosses/items etc. Fits the gameplay well (so Flagship kinda got that part right, subscriptions just brings it into a competition with the MMOs where it certainly wont stand a chance).

Watching the gameplay videos I'm still not totally sold on the gun play. Enemies seem especially stupid, running directly at you, being slow to shoot and generally not being very interesting in their behaviors. Combine that with a lack of reaction to being shot and I really wonder how "grindy" the combat is going to feel.

I'm mostly just waiting for some more people to have hands-on before I pre-order. I love Gearbox and it sounds like they're banking a lot on this one.

Maybe that's why it has the nickname "Diablo with guns"?

I'm pretty sure I'll be picking up Borderlands but I'll wait until I read final hands-on from the press when they get their gold copies. The skeptic in me says the content might not hold up for 30 hours.
PC user here.
I'll be playing Mordecai, Rogue tree, and Bloodwing spec. The Gunslinger tree is also attractive to me but I like the idea of my crow pecking things to death a wee bit more.

I fully expect targets to not react to every shot. Kinda like Gears of War where it takes a couple of rounds from a lancer before a locus reacts to it. Another better example would be thrown weapons & arrows in Diablo. They might pause and grunt with each hit, but doesn't slow their movement or charge towards you until they finally drop.

In early stages, going to assume lots of melee wielders that try to blind rush you. yeah stupid, but very common in a shooter. The videos hints at other types of enemy behavio: grenade users, suicide bombers & snipers.

Guess it all comes down to "feel"; will to be more shooter-like with a weight to firing, movement and bullet impact or a more rpg-lite-like, with numbers being more key.

I've already pre-ordered so I'll throw up my impressions first thing when the game lands.

EDIT: just remembered that I'm getting the PC version, which comes out after the consoles. So any impressions from me will be late. Best to let those picking up the console version lay down the baseline.

I've pre-ordered 360 version on faith.

Sigh...

In my dream last night I wanted to play Borderlands on my Wii. But I didn't get a physical copy because you had to download the game via different packs, like Fable 2 episodes only they were all available at once. I tried downloading two but my speed was crushingly low. I started to get frustrated at my connection in the middle of nowhere and the fact that I couldn't play a game I wanted to. I woke up.
Perhaps a nightmare?

I watched some gameplay videos last night after watching the cussing robot videos linked earlier. I think it actually cooled my enthusiasm for this game. It looked like they were just spraying the screen with a thousand bullets and then back pedaling whenever something came close to them. It honestly reminded me more of a Halo deathmatch. This one may not be for me. I'll be waiting on some goodjer impressions.

Well then you can ignore my reviews of it when they happen; because I like that style of play hence my motto: "Accuracy by Volume!!!"

I pre ordered for 360.

360 Borderlands whores unite and friend up!

My main concern is this type of game is highly dependent on community support. With L4D2 and MW2 right around the corner, how many folks can honestly say that they'll be playing this over those heavy hitters?

I'm not sure how I'm going to find time to play this with everyone that wants to play. I have 3 friends that want to play, Goodjers that want to play, plus I want to experience it on my own at my own pace. Too bad I need the job to pay for rent and stuff, other words this wouldn't be a problem.

I decided my first time through will be Soldier, not sure how I will spec him though.

When playing online do you guys burn through cut scenes or watch them? My friends and I decided that we can watch them on our own time, we like killing stuff together more that the story. On my own I will watch every cut scene/movie there is.

Besides DLC it's up in the air concerning their post-launch support.

If I pick this up I'll definitely be playing it over the AAA games because I have no intention of buying any.
I already have my zombie co-op game and I want something other than zombies right now.
I'll only being playing MW2's campaign.
I don't have a PS3 so Uncharted and Demon Souls are out of reach.
I'm barely interested in AC2 and they delayed the PC version.

That's funny, and I like the character, but damn if I don't wish they'd picked a different name than "Clap Trap." I don't know why. Just turns me off.

I can.

There is about a 2 week gap between BL and L4D2, so that should be enough time to focus on running it through some paces.

As for MW2, it's sort of a different genre of shooter: BL and L4D2 are focusing alot on actual Co-op while MW2 is like a normal shooter with a single-player campaign while the multiplayer is more like TF2 or the first COD4:MW.

It should be "Clap f*ckin' Trap."

Holy sh*t that's hilarious! Even better than the first. Hayoohhh!

I completely missed Switchbreak's post linking to it. I need to pay more attention to this thread for if/when they make more of these.

I can as well.

I will be playing this hardcore up until MW2 comes out, then play that hardcore for awhile. Hopefully after the new year I can find a balance to play them both, as I plan on playing through Borderlands multiple times like I did with Fallout 3; MW2 will be mostly for the online multiplayer after I beat the story once.

Yeah, I said it. Shoot me.

I got your back man. /soldier's turret
While I don't think L4D sucks, I just don't think the competitive multiplayer would grab me, granted I only played through the coop-campaign and that's all I plan on doing for L4D2 (that will take like one night maybe two).

This in reverse.

I'm with Fedora. I'll be playing plenty of L4D2, but if Borderlands grabs me, it will get at least equal playtime.

Yeah, what they said.

Yeah, I said it. Shoot me. To clarify, I've given plenty of Valve games shots, bought The Orange Box day one, and I just don't like their shooting physics. And HL2, for as much acclaim as it got, really didn't sit well with me. The stupid-long boat sequence shortly followed by the pain-in-the-ass dune buggy bit was too much for me to slog through.

My playtime with Borderlands is actually more dependent on whether or not I finish Brutal Legend in the week between releases, and how hard Dragon Age grips me. MW2 is a whole 3 weeks from BLs.

I've got it purchased on Steam, waiting for the pre-load. If nothing else, I'm really interested in seeing what AI-generated loot is like. I'm guessing it's going to be kind of ass, but I already have a team set up for regular play sessions.

So, ass or not, it should be worth exploring.

That's right ... I think it might be worth exploring ass later this month.

Why would AI-generated loot work for something like Diablo but not a shooter? There'll probably be a fair amount of useless BS, but you never can get enough vendor trash.

Off topic~

Also, this is one of the game's main components. It's been marketed, as far as I know, since they've shown the game. I don't see a reason why I should doubt the quality of something they've been working on, and for so long.

So, my reservation with it actually stems from some of their marketing. In one of their demos, they actually got kind of flustered and weirded out because the AI had come up with some sort of ridiculously overpowered rocket-shooting machinegun. Loot in Diablo is created via formulas, to be sure, but each item's budget is carefully balanced. They do the same thing in WoW, obviously, to great effect and lots of happy squirrel times.

I worry that the AI for Borderlands may not be quite so careful with its 'budget' for each weapon. I know they're hyping this as a major part of the game, but I'm not 100% they've got control of their beastie. To me, "we've got like 2 million weapons in the game" sounds more like a strike against than for.

Yes, a long time ago on a server far far away. I had a BM/WM that I got way, waaaay up there with a static party in a linkshell. I stopped playing FFXI regularly about a year after it launched in the states, and that was the period when SQueenix would happily delete your character if you let your account lie fallow for 3 months or more.

So ... my little iconic taru has long since passed into the great digital beyond. I've actually started using a new image for my interwebs avatar, which I really should bring over here.
