Brutal Legend Catch All

Seriously, the only thing that'd keep me from picking up the game day one is waiting for a PC version.

Demo made this a day 1 purchase for me. No doubt.

360.

Love the humor. Wasn't impressed with the gameplay at all.

I'll get it from Gamefly.

People like you make Manny, Raz and Eddie cry. Except Eddie. He's too F*CKING HARDCORE.

I just finished the demo. Now I'm angry.

Here I am, toiling away at a thankless job, dealing with all manner of social life ills, and through it all, I get to hear Future Me gloat. "That Female Doggo is long gone, bro," he says. "Even better, where I'm at both Brutal Legend AND Uncharted are out! And I have both of them! Plus, I've racked up mad vacation time, so I decided to take a few days, ya know. Anyway, I'm trying to decide which to play first, bro, but I can't make up my mind. Any suggestions?"

I hate that prick, Future Me. I think I'll give him a hangover.

Finally got to play the demo. I loved it, but it was sadly just as short as I was expecting it to be. It also doesn't touch upon any of the later-game RTS stuff that I've read about in previews, which I'm really excited to try (and which the multiplayer is based around).

Whoever said the game's graphics aren't very good is flat-out wrong. The technology behind the graphics might not be CryEngine 3 or anything, but it's a pretty sweet looking game.

My only real complaint is that the camera felt a little off. Other than that, for everything I was and am still expecting, feels like it's all going to come together.

Fun demo! Love the way the settings choices are presented to you (language and gore).

I thought the graphics were fine. It reminds me of when WoW and Eq2 came out; there seemed to be a lot of hatred for WoW's graphics. We all know how that played out.

As for the game itself, I just don't see myself purchasing it on day one. I'm in the same camp as ThinJ. The perception I got was that it was a button masher with amusing dialogue and good voice acting.

Like MechaSlinky, I had some beef with the camera. The view is rather narrow. I found myself in the beginning fighting in a tight cluster with those robed dudes, and next thing I know, I get lunged at and stabbed from offscreen by a robed dude who was next to me. I couldn't block because the view is so narrow I never saw the attack coming. I'm very curious what resolution this game is forcing and whether or not it's specific to the PS3. When the opening movie was playing and on the pause screen, my friends indicators would pop up and be super-sized as if the game was running @ a much lower resolution than anything else.

Finished the demo last night. Want more. The combat felt pretty good, as a start. I'm assuming the combo system will get more depth to it in the full game. The driving felt decent too, which is a bit of a shock considering that games that try to do multiple genres tend to fall on their arses. And if you're going to have a QTE system, you might as well make it a Rock Band/Guitar Hero themed one.

I'm not sure how the "command an army" thing is going to play out. I don't really like RTS games that much, and I hated, hated HATED Overlord (though, to be fair, that had more to do with the crummy map design lack of a decent minimap than anything else).

This one is definitely one to keep my eye on, but it's not a "must buy" as of yet. As I mentioned, games that try to do a lot of different things tend not to do any of them well. But from what I've seen so far, I'm optimistic.

I'm going to get it on the PS3, because my 360 is a launch unit, and could go belly-up at any time. Plus, the PS3 doesn't sound like a jet engine while in use. I can't even hear it, and the 360 is typically the loudest sound in the room.

It was running at 720p I believe. Its fairly standard to have your game's demo run at a lower resolution than the actual release though.

Demo was awesome. I played through it three times, and watched the cut scenes every time because I found them so amusing / badass.

The part where you're heading down the mountain of skulls on that walker-thing is pretty great.

I can see why people might be unimpressed with the hack&slash gameplay, because it's nothing especially new, but I thought it was executed stylishly.

There are very few console games out their that support more then 720p. Even GT5 prologue's "1080p" is 1280x1080.

Edit: Also PS3 & 360 games usually run at different resolutions (PS3 usually getting the shaft b/c of the port) so you can't compare between the two consoles.

I wouldn't hold out too much hope. They haven't said that it won't come out for PC, but they have confirmed that they aren't working on a PC version.

If I were marketing the game I wouldn't announce a PC version either. You'd get more opening day sales on your console versions that way, and you may get double sales down the line as people buy both console and pc version (e.g. Mass Effect).

Damn. I'll have to pick it up on 360 and sell that if/when the pc version comes out. It'll sort of make up for me not buying Psychonauts til it was in the bargain bin.

Tim Schafer was on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon getting interviewed about the game.

And he is awesome. Reason enough to buy this game ASAP, as DF needs all the support they can get. You have to keep the company alive that I might get a job there after my next portfolio update!

Cool interview. Thanks for the link. My favorite part: "People ask me, did you just make this game to meet your heavy metal heroes? Yeah! And it totally worked."

So I played through the demo the other day with my girlfriend watching. She said she wants me to get the game but I'm not allowed to play it unless she's there with me to watch.

So, I remember hearing that you could use a guitar peripheral alongside your gamepad, but I couldn't get it to work in the demo. Did that get cut?

I had only ever heard that was a rumor, but maybe it wasn't and did get cut from the game. I had thought about trying that as well-- did you play on 360 or PS3? Maybe it's in one version but not the other for some reason...

I'm convinced that the hands in the selection screen belong to Tim Schafer.

No guitar controllers for Brütal Legend:

The Escapist[/url]]Asked if he might include guitar controller support in Legend, Schafer revealed he'd been thinking about it. "I was trying to figure out how you would throw down the controller and pick up the guitar," he recalled. Yeah, it does sound a bit cumbersome when you put it that way. Schafer then remarked that are "no plans" for guitar controller functionality in Brutal Legend.

Nope, Giant Bomb confirmed it was Jack Black's hands.

Also, the idea of using a guitar peripheral was only speculation and rumours, and even if it was true, I'm sure with this game's terrible history with Activision, that idea was dead in the water a long time ago.

I'm convinced that that is one of the best menu screens ever. My opinion may be skewed, though. But seriously, it is one of the coolest menu screens I've seen in a long time. Other "best" menus (of games I've played)? DiRT, Shadow Of The Colossus, God of War (1 & 2). This one ranks right up there for it's simplicity and the fact that they managed to fit the entire menu system into one album. And that it was live-action.

Agreed.

I guess I also fall into the "meh" camp on this one-- loved the humor, liked the graphic style, thought the gameplay was a bit off.

This was a straight-up porting of the first chunk of the game, which makes sense for a demo, but really doesn't do a good job of showing all of the other aspects of the game... like the free roaming stuff, or the RTS aspects I'm just hearing about here in this thread.

Was that really the first part of the game? and if so, can the rest of the game keep up that kind of pace?

That is my concerns as well. Judging from Psychonauts, there should be plenty of interesting and diverse characters and settings. I haven't played the demo, but I watched about half of the Giant Bomb video. I think the cursing sensor makes it quite a bit funnier. My doubts about the combat seem to be eased as well. I can't really stand Jack Black anymore, but I think he does a good job with the character and it definitely seems like a character and not Jack Black being Jack Black.

I think that having the protagonist be this big, super-burly, surly character rather than good ol' marshmallow-gut Jack Black helps to separate the two. And he obviously put a little bit of effort into making the voice not send exactly like he does in his movies.. Unlike, say, Nathan Fillion in ODST, who almost literally is a carbon-copy of his character from Firefly, even down to some of the slang terms he uses in the game.

I played the demo and then totally pre-ordered it through Amazon. I had planned on renting Brutal Legend, but, more so than most games, this one really deserve the support of people buying it.

And if you pre-order now on Amazon and request Release Date shipping you can get Brutal Legend for $52.

So... apparently this is what you get when you mix EA's marketing department and metal:
