Lost Planet 2

So I downloaded the Lost Planet 2 demo, thinking it'd be much like Lost Planet 1, and saw that there was co-op. "Cool," I thought to myself, assuming it would be much like Lost Planet 1 but with one other person doing all the same things I was doing. Then as it was downloading I read that it's actually 4-player co-op. Now that piqued my interest, since it seemed difficult to balance a gameplay experience for 1 to 4 players.

Finished downloading, got into the game and... what's this? Three AI players, battling a gigantic monster? And they need ME to help!? :O

Even though they got clobbered out of existence pretty quickly and didn't respawn, it was actually quite an impressive battle and gave me some definite vibes of Monster Hunter. Just, y'know, without all that "hunting" crap. So Monster Killer.

There are some things I still don't understand, like how when I blew the monster's leg off a bunch of cubes fell out, and I got some sort of recognition for picking up these cubes. I guess in Lost Planet 1, monsters were made out of heat, and in Lost Planet 2, they're made of cubes. Maybe we need to kill them for building materials?

Either way, it wasn't what I was expecting and was actually rather fresh and interesting. Anyone want to try it co-op?

Stylez and I played it coop last night. At one point he got in a mech that had room for two other dudes to strap in and fire turrets on either side. Vaguely ridiculous looking, but also very satisfying ... like Lobster's mom. I love how that giant monster seems to free roam all over the map, rather than be on a fixed route every time. After failing a couple times, we finally took him down. He leaves a rather impressive looking corpse, I must say.

We had fun playing, I think it will be a blast to play through with four people. Good direction for the series!

Tried the demo with a friend. Really cool looking but what the hell are you supposed to do? The demo just throws you into a boss battle and doesn't really tell you anything. After we would raise some posts and blow some legs up it would tell us to go inside the beast. After getting eaten a couple times trying to go through its mouth we gave up. Although the game could be cool this demo was awful.

I have a feeling this demo was made for people who played the first game and are familiar with the mechanics.

It's mostly just "shoot the glowy bits until it dies" as a general rule. In this case you blow out its knees until it falls, then you have a shot at getting into its gaping maw.

I think that's how it works, anyways. I never got in, but Stylez did.

Raising those posts give you T-Energy, which is basically health. I think.

T-Energy being naturally superior to S-Energy..

4 Player Co-Op sounds awesome.. does it support System Link for co-op?

I never managed to get "inside" the thing either. I just kept shooting it in the mouth whenever it gave me the opportunity.

Raising the posts gives you T-Energy but they also act as spawn points. Also note that you can walk up to those big sign things and press "B" to get some info. It isn't very "newbie friendly," though.

Anyone else notice that the explosions are extremely red, compared to the first game's? I liked the more yellow explosions better.

Also easy to get inside, but it moves very mechanically.

...Hey, wait... Aww, I made myself sad.

I got inside it. He fires out one of his tentacle thingies and it grabs you. You then go on a splash mountain ride of doom with a variety of innards lashing out at you as you ride the slide of bile. Eventually you reach its pooper which has a variety of serrated edge blades spinning about, and then it kills you and fires you 300 feet in the air.

Best to stay on the outside I think.

The game definitely has potential, and the bosses certainly seem geared towards co-op play. I wish they made the grapple a little less cumbersome, that was a complaint I had from the first game that they haven't seemed to resolve here. Definitely looking forward to renting it!

Nah, it doesn't always kill you. There is a "heart" type node inside you can hit to do heavy damage to the beast. I was pooped out about 3 times and lived through each one. There's also explody critters inside that will kill you if you don't kill them first. I did damage on the inside every time I went in the belly though.

Can your friends outside attack it in a way that effects what you do inside? Because that would be awesome.

That... is a big bug.

FYI, the PS3 demo is now out. It includes two campaign maps that involve trudging through the woods, killing bugs, etc. The third area is similar to that of the X360 demo, with the same boss monster but much fewer instructional signs and only two or three VSs. Like the X360 demo, it's all co-op but is very doable solo.

It's good if you want to get a better taste for the game but the boss is definitely the best part, and it takes about 30 minutes to get there.

Some new info on the customization options.

They say there's something like 60 "outfits," each consisting of a head, body, legs, and backpack. You can also customize your emotes and your "title," which seems to be unlocked like an achievement.

The most interesting part is the weapon customization. It's not the usual add-on attachments or fancy stickers, but rather you can pick which weapons you'll find. The game doesn't spawn specific weapons, it spawns weapon types, so if you have a shotgun selected as your short-range weapon and pick up a short-range weapon spawn, you'll have a shotgun. If you switch that weapon out for something else, someone can pick it up but for them, it's a flamethrower (even though it was just a shotgun a second ago). It's a pretty unique system that doesn't make a ton of narrative sense, but sounds fun. I can imagine well-coordinated teams swapping out weapons because maybe one guy's long-range weapon is more useful in a particular situation than anyone else's. They also mentioned that there were be some special versions of each weapon that you can unlock. I'm guessing they'll be more "niche" rather than super-powered.

Characters also get "abilities," which seem like the normal minor tweaks that change how your character handles and lets you be better at the kinds of things you like to do. The example given was an ability that lets you capture data posts faster.

So, anyone else interested at all or am I talking to myself here?

I think it's going to be a fun coop game. I'm still interested!

Same here. Enjoyed the demo, looking forward to coop.

I'm already preparing my dissertation on what a terribly offensive and cavalier game LP2 will be, so obviously I'll have no time to play it.

Thanks for the self-indulgent reference, I'll show myself out!

GameStop's pre-order bonuses have been announced and they are... well... see for yourself.

You... You are no robot.

I do hope it does come to the PC and that we get a decent number of players there. I know it's my platform of choice.

Release date is now in May, which sucks even harder since it seemed to be a marketing decision.

I'm lonely. And I had to find this stupid thread with Google. Our on-site search didn't work.

Anyway! New details about character customization. Looks pretty sweet.

Still lonely.

They're bumping the console release to May 11 and the PC release back to Fall. Also if you sign up at the Lost Planet 2 site you can get early access to the new multiplayer demo. Details here.

Should I stop posting stuff? No one seems interested.

I appreciate the post even if the news is a day late. I think I'm more interested in the title because it was pushed back on PC. Now I might not have to choose between multiple titles as is the case for the majority of this Spring.

I may not be posting much but I do have the game preordered. I'm just not sure there's much conversation to really be had about it. It's Lost Planet 2. It'll be hours and hours of shoot the things in their glowy orange bits until they stop scrabbling around and trying to kill you.

It's just got co-op this time.

Played a few games with the new demo.

Let me say this first. I don't expect to be great the very first time I play a competitive multiplayer shooter. In fact, I rarely expect to be even half-decent after years of practice. So I'm not ready to abandon competitive multiplayer Lost Planet 2 entirely.

With a disclaimer like that, you can probably see where this is going.

This game has absolutely everything I hate about competitive multiplayer shooters. Easily spammable "dodge" move? Check. Starting weapon so weak it takes two full magazines to kill anyone? Check. Unique one-shot-kill weapons that always spawn in the same spots? Oh, triple check: there's a cannon, a missile launcher, and a sniper rifle, and if you get one you can camp that spot for ammo and completely dominate (someone with a sniper rifle got 6,000 points to my 300). There's also a GIANT FLYING ROBOT WITH CANNON ARMS, though that's not an instant win since you need to hop out to fix it and can't get fresh ammo so easily.

The multiplayer monster hunting demo was great but right now I'm feeling that the game was balanced for that mode. As in, not balanced for competitive multiplayer. I'll definitely be willing to give it a shot once the full game comes out and I can get a mouse and keyboard in my hands. After all, I felt just as powerless when I first started Modern Warfare 2 and now that I learned how to be a cheap bastard too I feel a little better.

Whatevers. I'm looking forward to this game because it's a shooter with coop, big weapons, and huge monsters.

.

We going 360 or PS3 on this one?

360 for me. If it's multiplayer, it's 360.
