DDO: Khyber Roll Call

Are there any European players on P&P? There's no F2P option over here, so I'd have to play on a ddo.com Server - however GMT+1 puts me on a -9 hours difference to PDT.

Yep, I can't say how many per se, but I do know there are occasional french, italian, or german dialogs in general chat, so you wouldn't be the only EU player.

Anyway, since its free no harm in checking it out to see.

The Turbine Launcher will run in your system tray after you try to close it in the traditional manner. It's entirely possible that you missed it moving to the tray and it "borked" your internet by sitting down there hogging all your available bandwidth with the download.

I dont think that was the issue. The game wasnt downloading either it kept making the connection itself drop even though it showed my modem was connected. Once I removed everything it all seemed to work again.

Here you go.

Odd, I see some members all the time. Then again, I'm on at an odd time, usually pretty late.

I didn't see many (any?) guild members on either. However I didn't find the game that engaging - I'm back to WoW for now. Good luck!

Hey Frolic, if you read this sorry I dropped on you. I got disconnected just before we hit the sarcophagus and my internet is currently borked really badly.

Here you go.

Also visit ddo.enterwiki.net , it's the 'definitive' wiki, but as wikis are want to do, its not caught up to the very latest update yet.

@ tamren - k, I killed your hireling.

Turns out my wireless switch died. So my internet is totalled until I can get a new one.

Well I've found myself playing this and not Lotro, which I'm paying for. I've got a dwarf cleric x/fighter 1 going named Khorem, and some rogue whose name I forget.

Can someone either point me to an overview or give the 3 second version of what you get if you pay for a month, then go back to free? Do you unlock 4 slots on every server forever? I mean, is it worth it to pay $15 for 1 month to get a bunch of stuff you'd end up paying $20+ for if you piecemealed it through the store? Everything unlocks except the special classes and races?

ALso, it is mentioned in a couple places that "premium" F2P accounts get access to some modules for free, but which are these?

Khoram, your pic/avatar is from the old SSI Gold Box Pool Of Radiance, right? That's sweet.

just adding that the character I've actually been playing is Piriel .. to add to the list. now a lvl 8 sorc.. they were right about it taking awhile for casters to come into their own. starting to love the sorc more and more. fully fire specced fireballs/walls of fire/scorching ray .. is deadly. and the group buffs always get me tons of group <3

Why, yes, yes it is

Once you drop back to a Premium Account (this is Turbine's name for an ex-VIP) you maintain the 4 slots on each server, as well as the removal of restrictions on chat, mail, auction house usage, and gold storage. You lose access to the Drow and Warforged races, the Monk class, the shared bank slot, and all "premium" adventure content that you don't then purchase from the DDO store.

It's not necessary to subscribe for a month to get the Premium account. Buying any amount of points to use in the DDO store provides you with the exact same unlocks.

Yeah I need to group with Piriel. I love arcanes, tons of fun to play. My main raiding characters are a wiz and a sorc. (Although I like to raid with the wiz a tiny hair more due to spell selection, the sorc is the most destructive and fun 6-man guy). Your next big life changing spell will be Finger of Death.

As soon as we get a handful of dudes to level 8 we'll start hitting the Tempest Spine raid. I havent seen a Tempest Spine guest pass so I'm thinking that it is free.

yeah certainly.. id love to check out tempest spine. I'm a free player. but have prob unlocked most adv packs and account access things anyways.
and would love any sorc tips you have!

I'm sure down the line i would prob like a more refined wiz. but first time playing through, this sorc is def doing the trick.

The DDO site itself does a fairly good job describing each of the account types.
http://www.ddo.com/vip
There's also a thread in the forums detailing which content is free and which is paid along with a little "mini-review" describing the cost-benefit of each.

If you are on f2p and you buy character slots/classes/races/adventure packs, do you ever lose access to them like you do when downgrading from VIP/Premium?

Also, thanks to Frolic for helping me complete Waterworks last night! Though after words, I turned in the quest to the harbor master, and I believe you were right, I don't think it was required to gain entrance to the market.

Btw, what is optimal build for a fighter? I am level 3, 2500 exp away from level 4 dwarven fighter. I have put my action points in to dwarven con, str, dwarven axe specialization, some others that I don't remember. The one feat I have gotten to choose, I chose power attack. Any suggestions or should I start over?

That was you, Stormy? I didn't know that!

Yup, that was me in my alter ego, Kannen Fauder.....yah, didn't you read my post Yo Duckman! to the party? Now who else has ever said that to you in online games....

Btw, does anyone know if you can buy points off DDO's website, or can you only buy them while logged into the game?

Note, you can still unlock Drow the natural way by getting 400 total favor.

Updated. Like a boss!

Thanks for the clarification, folks! Just bought a couple points to upgrade to premier.

Yeah, it's definitely not. I've not completed the Waterworks area yet, but I've already ventured into the Market. There's a lot more red (pay only?) quest stuff in the Market!

One thing I did encounter was that I've taken a red quest (not knowing it was something I'd have to purchase to play), and the game won't let me abandon it. I think it says something about it being a one time quest, so you can't restart it.

There is a minor difference between the two - 400 Favor unlocks it for that server only.
Buying from the DDOStore unlocks it across all servers.

Do warforged make good wizards? They can then self-heal like a cleric I suppose. Do people seem to like warforged? Any experiences from folks playing wizards and sorcs? Which is better overall in your opinion?

from what i hear. they make great wizards. I personally hate how they look. and look nothing like a caster should look.. If visuals aren't a problem.. then they are a great race for almost any class.

Khoram wrote:

WF Wizards and WF Sorcs feature heavily in many crazy powerful solo builds. Usually, but not always, this involves multi-classing with melee for good BAB. If you take enough arcane magic to get you able to self healf with wands and more importantly cast displacement (which is 50% miss chance-and is effectively the best AC in game) then you can be a beast.

As a pure caster, they are okay. Self-healing is neat but not a requirement for really any group content. When you start making money you'll have a stack of cure serious pots on you at all times anyway.

For a caster destined to perform very well at elite difficulty end-game only three things truly matter (besides gear of course):
1. the ability to reach 250 hp or so, 2. a primary casting stat of 34 at the very minimum, 3. spell penetration, as much as you can possibly get.

Wizards perform excellently when you know the quest inside and out and can load up exactly the spells which make it go the easiest. Sorcs do alot better when you don't really know whats coming.

Examples:

In the Stormreaver raid you must fly around, swim skill affects fly speed. Wizards can have merfolk's blessing loaded and ready to go. There's no way a sorc would carry that in his/her default list. Not a big deal in this reaid but its a nice perk. There are times when the Stormreaver casts anti-gravity and flings the entire raid up to the ceiling spikes then back down after a few seconds, feather fall doesn't help when you slam into the floor, but tumble does and a wizard can have this ready.

In the Hound of Xoriat raid you need to drop globes of invulnerability in the event that the dog spits bees at someone (yes, not a joke). Wizzies will load this as well as mass bull's and mass bear's. Sorcs are very unlikely to choose these since they have little purpose beyond this raid.

In the Shroud you will ideally debuff the frak out of the pit fiend, sorcs will not necessarily carry the full debuff complement. Shroud also benefits from fire shield, break enchantment, and knock...which sorcs may not have. Shroud raids usually run with one or at the most two arcane casters, so sorcs may have a tiny bit harder time PUGging as you are mostly there for debuffs in the final phase.

I prefer raiding with my wizard by a hair, but I prefer 6-manning or loot farming with my sorc by alot since he casts tons faster and has a massive mana pool.

For a new player, its a tough call. Wizard you will get to see all the spells and will know what you'd want as a sorc. But wizard is very costly for a new account: tons of scrolls and inscription materials to buy. Sorcs are fun and mana-rich but you will probably feel like there's this whole world of arcane spells you'll never get to see or play with.

I'm up to 8 now on my sorc and I feel this completely. I have my small list of spells that I use.. and i feel like i do great with them.. huge mana pool.. fast casts.. etc. but i feel like theres 2/3 of the spell list, that I've never played with. I have no idea how my sonic, ice, or acid spells would play.

I just hope I'm not going to wish i had a wiz at high lvls instead of a sorc. I do love the 6 man stuff (havent done any raid content.. or even know if i will).. so we'll see. your post leaves me feeling good about leveling the sorc atm though!
