AION: Catch All

You will really like both the healer sub classes: chanter and cleric. They are both distinct. Much more distinct than the differences between a gladiator and templar or sorceror and spirit master.

If they get the lag issues sorted - this game will really shine...

Did we choose the only two servers that have problems? Or are they all going down?

We should do a roll call thread. It took me a while searching this one just to find the right server to roll on.

I didn't set up a roll call yet since this is still beat and who knows if we will get the names we want or change our minds 10 more times before launch on what class we will play as a main lol. If anyone has rolled Asmo on Israphel your welcome to add my sorc on your friends list as well his name is Vold.

PS

I had this bookmarked and thought I would share since the servers are going up and down like crazy compaired to closed beta. The link is to a server status for Aion.

Fileplanet is giving away beta codes to everyone not just subscribers now. So it's a real open beta now I guess. Don't use Fileplanet to download it though. Just log into your PlayNC account and add the key you can download it directly from them at a pretty good pace.

I wanted to share with you some of the creations made by the Goons: http://mordiceius.com/creations/

Some of my favorites:

Someone sell me on this game. From what I have seen, heard and played this will have me killing boars until I get my wings.

Thanks!

It doesnt look like its pure grind, from the open beta experience I've had so far. It seems, well, exactly like every other game out there. Go pick up a bunch of quests, kill to do them, and level up. Don't let anyone try to tell you that's NOT grinding, because it so very much is, but it's disguised the same way it is in every other game out there.

It takes all of 3 hours to get to level 10 (when you ascend and get wings).

Is there more grinding after you get wings?

It is an MMO. All MMOs have grind.

Type 3 bloom looks a lot better. I'm not sure if I want to mess around with any more classes in OB or just hold off until launch, I never like making it too far because I know it will all be wiped.

So true - peeps think quests are not grinding - they just mask it...

On a good note seems they fixed the lag and rubberbanding, have not had any problems in a couple of days.

If your worried about grinding its not that bad compared to the stereotypical Ncsoft (Korean MMO) games. I played lost of grind MMO's lineage 2 age 1 and before that Everquest which was uber slow. The low levels are not easy some classes you will feel are lacking, you will probably die to mobs during 1-10. All classes pick up around lv 10 once they get abilities to start defining there class. In closed beta I had one leveling gap where i had to grind, 17-18 and that was because i couldn't find ground. The games is smooth and polished , but its not super easy chain pulling 3 mobs will get you killed.

My advice try it yourself.

I agree with the 1-10 - the classes do not "shine" until 10, so do not get fustrated.

Trend I noticed when picking my faction , I tried Siel and luminiel server (sorry for butchering spelling) They both had the max allowed Eylos pops which is fine I planed on playing Asmodian anyway , I wonder if this will carry over to the live servers. While faction pop typically isn't a big deal , as much as having a high populated server overall , it could be troubling. Most recently in War , I played the smaller pop faction on a low pop server and it got a litle annoying when the zerg would hit and your defending with the same 30 people for a week straight.

The scout classes do not appear to shine until late teens at the earliest if not 20. I have heard that the ranger does not pick up steam until 20 and my assassin is getting moderately better at 15. Galdiator, templar, sorceror and spiritmaster are all much easier to play solo from the get go. The spiritmaster gets the nod for the easiest.

Lets ask you a better question: What do you want from an MMO?

I need this in my MMO or its a deal breaker

Does anyone have any experience on the type of loot, or better yet, the variety of gear that drops? Will everyone end up looking relatively the same, or will there be a distinction at some point (ie. "Wow, that Sorcerer has the Awesome Stick of Doom!")

Also, any PvP impressions in-house here?

I think there is distinction once you get to pvp loot post lv 25 and upper level item sets. The lower level gear you can basic visual differences but nothing stunning. There are videos on you tube of top level weapons, weapons that have extendable parts while you swing that increase your melee range.

these are just some average weapon models i think.

Haha.. wow. Guess that answers my question

I'm glad I'm looking scrub-appropriate for the lower levels, you have to look like a hobo to really appreciate the upgrades down the road.

It's a nice change from AOC and to a lesser extent WAR, where the "upgrades" used a lot of the same models, so you didn't get that visual feel of progression or semi-uniqueness.

I also heard that 1.5 has a lot of new weapon models that look even more unique no clue though.

I played a Whitelion in warhammer, looked like a dam Conehead from SNL

Post level 30 you can effectively take stats from one item and graft them onto another item if you really like the look of another item; plus there's godstones (weapon procs for us old fashioned types) which kick things up a gear too; both of which add to the fun of the Abyss; when you go up against someone, what you see them wielding may not necessarily give you a true picture of their abilities.

From this one? The only part that makes me remotely interested is the wings. Not being able to fly that is old hat, but being able to fight while flying.

Hows the pvp?

Godstones sound pretty sweet, is there a lot of variety out there - ie, ones more geared towards CC, other effects?

I forgot you could graft stats from one weapon to another, that's pretty neat. I remember it taking forever to get/create a sweet weapon in WoW, only to jump into the Battlegrounds and everyone in my class was a carbon copy of myself down to the weapons/armour.

I've been really getting into the whole crafting culture of the game, its really quite fun. It seems that you can pick up all the professions but just master one. I havent tried all of them yet, really just working on Cooking, Tailoring, and Alchemy.

I have noticed a lot of people complaining about drop rates and such but I haven't really encountered much of that, usually its a 1:1 and at the worst a 3:1...Maybe they just aren't used to the horrible WoW drop rates....

My big question is...would it be worth it to put down the extra 10$ and get the collectors edition upgrade to the game, even if its just for those glorious upgraded wings, an extra 40 second flight time sounds huge to me.

Not sure, I figured it was only $10 more on Steam for the CE so thought.. why not? I think the wings are a premium, with time in the air being a sought after thing - so I'd imagine they are a pretty nice bonus.

Is the crafting annoying or easy? How would you compare it to other MMOs?

Well, the wings you can buy at level 30 that give you an extra 30 seconds of flight time are 800,000 kinah. The ones you can buy at level 40 that give you an extra 60 seconds are 10,000,000 kinah. Eventually, sure, you'll want the extra 60 seconds, but that's 800,000 less kinah you'll have to farm for.

Swat wrote:

The crafting is similar in many ways to other MMOs in that you level/skill up a point at a time, but thats about where the similarity in my opinion ends. Once you have all the materials needed to craft you have to be at one of the crafting specific zones, ie for a kitchen=cooking table, tailoring=loom, etc then you will see two bars pop up blue for success and red for failure. If you get a successful craft that is self explanatory, but if you fail you loose whatever crafting mats you were working with. Like LoTR there are crafting quests that you can pick up, but they aren't quite the same as LoTR. The crafting quests scale up as you level your skill, and upon completion the quest giver will give you a material related to your craft, sometimes even a recipe. My one complaint is that it seems that most of the nicer recipes, specifically clothing in my case requires that you have Aether Powder. That is not an easy material to gather, since the only way that I have found is through vortexes that are high above a city....meaning if you dont get it within the timer of your wings you will fall to your death, very annoying when you have to pay 1.5k kinnah a death.

But other then that I think crafting in Aion is pretty unique and I have enjoyed it thus far.
