should we wait until the beta opens up to set up our on vent channel or get one going right away?

I'm not sure what you're asking really, but there is a vent server for GWJ and there is now a channel called "League of Legends" on this server. I'm going to try to hang out on this channel instead of on the beta vent server. Info for the GWJ.

Ok, I'll risk a skim and ask a few questions:

1) How many heroes?
2) How many game modes?
3) Is there or will there be single player mode?

1) Currently 35 but they keep adding more. Bad news is while some of them will be free to play I think you're gonna have to buy the others. I will say that Heroes of Newerth probably has about twice as many heroes the last time I checked.
2) So far one game mode and one map. I'm hoping for at least some more maps.
3) You can play with bots, but that's pretty much it for single player.

So did everyone pre-order to get the BETA? I did the FB fan thing - mayhap i'll get a key.
Is it worth it in your/our community opinion?

I think its worth it. It seems to appeal to us to some degree. The biggest advantage of it being free I'm sure a lot of goodjers will just have on their hardrive.

Just finished my second game vs comp and my GOD THIS GAME IS FUN!!!

It does feel so much more like DOTA (obviously) but the animation is really fluid. the graphics do need some getting use to (specially because Dota has this colored circled around you), but congrats LoL, you will easily kick Demigod's butt. (which is sad, because Demi is also an awesome game).

I just got into the Beta, there was a gap of around 2 months between filling out the form on the website and getting an invite though. Looking forward to trying it this weekend, I really loved Demigod despite the issues but never played DOTA.

From reading the website it sounds as though the full game will have over 40 playable champions but you only get access too 20 of them by pre-ordering. I'm guessing the free to play option will give you access to less than this. Provided they keep the paid for champions balanced though I have no problem with this type of system.

I think they must have started to send out more invites. I signed up for the beta a few days ago and got the key the next day.

We got four together in one game yesterday and it was pretty fun, although Latrine told me to "Honestly, learn to play the game." I don't think he enjoyed my Dragon slaying adventure which brought glory to the whole team.

Heh, well basically you got killed 7 times in a row and then spent like 8 minutes killing that stupid dragon while we were fighting 5v4 and getting our butts kicked. I don't mind if you die while trying to play, but it seemed like you'd given up.

YA PANDA! LEARN HOW TO PLAY THE GAME!

I'm in the beta, so far it's making me pissed that I dropped $50 on Demigod. This stomps all over it.

Sinatar and Thowky, what are you game names?

Current list AFAIK,

-Crockpot
-Hobes2009
-Kazar
-Latrine
-PandaEskimo
-Petriefied

My game name is just Thowky, same as here.

Played a number of games today. The ones against bots were a bit boring but let me get used to the game, the ones against other humans were a lot of fun and have convinced me that I'll be playing this after release. I really like the look and feel of the game and it's really got that "just one more go" addictiveness to it.

Just trying all the available characters is going to give me a lot of gameplay and there seems to be a lot of customisation there with runes, masteries and spells. Anyone who didn't like Favor Points in Demigod though is really going to hate this part of the game as in Demigod new players had a small disadvantage due to Favor Items and here new players have a major disadvantage due to having no runes, no masteries and only a few spells. Personally I like this and you do build levels quickly from both wins and losses, but I can see some people hating it.

I actually think Demigod is the better game, there seems to be a lot more depth there in all the little things you need to do such as citadel upgrades, flags to capture etc. There is definitely some depth to League of Legends too, but it all seems to be about your Champion, though maybe I'm just feeling this way because I played something like 70 hours of Demigod and only a few hours of this. It's also something that may already be addressed in other game modes that aren't in the Beta.

Despite that I'll probably end of playing more League of Legends than Demigod as it runs better on my PC and suffers from less problems online despite still being in Beta.

So I think the game is pretty rad in its own right. If I had to compare it Demigod I would rather go with Demigod. For me, Demigod has more depth.

A couple of concerns I have is that this game could become very unbalance with all the characters. There is no way possible they can't balance these guys. Demigod has 8 guys and they are already have trouble with that (however I notice that every Demigod is good at it's particular role).

Yeah, this is a perpetual problem in DOTA, but they update enough so that no character is unbalanced for very long.

Sinatar same as here.

I dunno what extra depth Demigod has outside of the citadel upgrades. I am rarely on to play with GWJers so I tend to pub it and in pub Demigod games nobody ever touches the citadel.

i personally like the persistent leveling in this, yea you have a bit of a disadvantage if you're playing against experienced players, but thats the trade off in any competitive game with RPG elements and it's never really bothered me. If the games matchmaking works like it's supposed to then it shouldn't really be an issue.

In pub games people almost always upgrade the citadel, in fact in pub games you are likely to find people buying things that most people don't think are worth buying, though it depends on the type of game. In general people buy the money and minion upgrades, but some game types mean the building upgrades are more attractive, some people like the bonus xp etc. I don't think I've ever been in a game where no-one has bought an upgrade, at the very least you see priests appear.

As for other depth, it's from all the little things. If you ignore capturing flags then you are going to have less bonuses, get behind on war effort and have less gold to spend. Do you spend gold on upgrading yourself, buying the next upgrade for the citadel or saving up for something later on. There are lots of other little things like this that are quite subtle but actually have a lot of depth to them. Maybe there are things like that in Leage of Legends too, I just haven't seen them yet.

I picked up a lot of beta keys from the League of Legends booth here at PAX. I have 21 spares. PM me if you want one.

How does LoL compare to Heroes of Newerth at this point?

You are awesome. Sending a PM now.

I personally think its way better. HON is pretty much exactly like DOTA and LOL seems to separate itself from DOTA but keeps intact what makes DOTA appealing in the first place (gawking, character builds, fun grinding).

I'm still standing by my statement that Demigod is the best out of all of them, but I'm defiantly will be playing both LOL and Demigod.

Damn- I just actually pre-ordered this puppy to get the beta key!
I figured for $20 and with what everyone says - I couldn't go wrong. But of course the timing irony is spot on as usual.

OK, couple of replies:

Demigod is more "army" focused while LoL is a direct evolution of DOTA and they focused on "Summoner" focus. The best I've seen so far from LoL is the shop-engine. It literally makes buying a 3 second thing.

Grubber788 wrote:

If I've followed the LoL development correctly, mostly if not all of the LoL team used to the IceFrog team that has been working on DOTA for the last few years, so they should have a very good idea how to get it "mostly balanced". Whenever something gets out of hand, they'll "nurf" the character until they can fix it properly.

Sorry, I suggested about a Ventrilo Channel without checking if there was one already. I figured since it was only a handful of us, no one had bothered with that.

That is one of my favorite things about LoL is that it makes buying things easy for noobs. Even the recommendations are great to use and start up with.

I think Demigod does focus on army more than LoL but I really don't think it's army focus. I think the army thing is just to finish off the other guy. Buy giants is pretty much the mark of the black spot for the other guy. It much more about getting the perfect build and using it correctly.

Meh but who cares, both games are great.

I will be Edxactly as soon as I get my key.

Thanks to GeoRob I've got a key but when I excitedly went to get my goods I was greeted with this page:

beta sign-up page wrote:

The feature you are trying to use is currently offline for maintenance, please try again later.

Anyway, I should be in as Liquidmantis when that's back online, as well as my brother as Slytin.

You don't ask for that many, just wait till the attendants aren't looking.

Thanks to Georob I'll probably get on sometime soon as well. Will be nossid as usual.

Changing the topic a bit (more Praises will follow, I promise). Did they explain the Commercial Model of how it would work? I've heard they would be willing to try a Free + Pay for Extras model. Did they explain how it would work and what the "extras" would be?

As promised: yay georob.

They weren't giving presentations. I only asked about gameplay not their pricing plans but this article talks about it.

Essentially, Micro transactions will allow you to purchase early access to new equipment, heroes, powers, or whatever other future content will be offered -- but even non-paying customers will eventually get access to those items, and none of them will allow the payers to smackdown the non-payers.
