UFO:Aftermath?

I have to admit that I have never really played many turn-based games except for a little Fallout. But after the recent demo of Silent Storm and then viewing the trailer for UFO last night, I think I am hooked. It is supposed to be out this month, anyone picking it up?

Oh this is one thats on my DEFINITE buy list. It looked pretty awesome in the trailers!

I will probably wait a couple of days to see what reviews are like, but I have high hopes and definately plan to buy it so long as I''m not reading that it sucks.

And turn-base rules!

And turn-base rules!

much as I love turn based I also like being given the option, I''m currently replaying Fallout Tactics and I''m again playing it in non turn based mode and having a blast!.
More games should have both options built in.

It likes like UFO has:

Simultaneous combat system - a natural blend of real time and turn based action.

Pretty cool !

One thing about it I read about that I don''t like is apparentely you can''t go in the buildings. I don''t get that. Half the fun of the X-Com games was sneaking through all the rooms in a building, never knowing when an alien was going to be hiding in one.

As I already mentioned before: UFO: Aftermath is as turnbased as let''s say Baldur''s Gate. It''s real-time, but you can pause anytime you want. Also, you can set it to slow-motion or super-slow-motion, making sure it doesn''t get too hectic.

Oh, but can you disable real-time? I used to be turned off (no pun intended) by the slow methodical type of game but after Silent Storm I actually like it.

No, ""turn-based"" is no option, at least not as far as I''ve seen and read. You can play it at the slowest level, you can pause. But you cannot apply ''strict'' turn-based rules.

Ok, still sounds fun.

I didn''t mind the game''s real time option when I got to try it out at E3. The game pauses when you sight an enemy, and you can pause it at any time using the space bar and still give orders.

Soooo... they changed the single best thing about XCOM (true turn-based combat)?

Hmmm... I''ll definitely have to wait for reviews and a demo before deciding to purchase this one, then. Non-turn-based combat just isn''t nearly as fun or involving to me.

Actually, it''s more Laser Squad Nemesis where you cue up ""orders"" to your soldiers and then click ""GO"" and they all move simultaneously. The game will pause when an enemy is encountered and that''s when you get to assign new orders if you wish.

I liked the continuous turn based combat of Fallout Tactics. It sped up the missions by like 60%.

Of course your troops AI was not smart enough to shoot over or around your own teammates. That was the most frustrating part. That along with enemies using the terrain cover all to well and stepping out from nowhere, killing one of your team and then practically vanishing into the shadows. It was just unnatural and unfun.

Yes according to an article on UFOftermath.co.uk this has gone gold and even better for me a demo will be available on the cover of PCgamer hopefully next month (I subscribe!) SWEET!

Adding to that, it looks like it''ll arrive ''roundabout the 26th (from GameSpot):

""Simple answer there is it is already gold,"" said Faller when asked about the current status of the game. ""We have a release date in the UK for the 26th of September. It will be slightly different in some countries--down to the time it takes them to reproduce the game.""
