Fable III Catch-All

We know that you're going to overthrow the King of Albion and take over. It sounds like it has less of a focus on the lone hero and more about managing organizations, be it a rebellion or a kingdom. Also that Molyneaux has identified THE ONE THING that's wrong with Fable-like games (which would be... Fable... and... Fable II?) and he's FIXED IT but he's NOT TELLING US WHAT IT IS.

Release is supposedly late 2010.

No word on pet AI, but DogWatch 2010 is keeping their ears to the ground.

Surprise!

...not really.

I'm a little sad to find that the new protagonist will be descended from my Fable II hero. I was sorta hoping that the 'evil king' would be my Fable II guy (imported from save file) and I would have a customized final boss! I would curse the fact that I maxed out his stats, but take pride in the fact that the people of Albion hate him so, so very much and will stop at nothing to overthrow him.

I would have loved that. So much. I worked hard for those horns.

I was excited when I read the article. Now I'm a little disappointed. Well played.

Maybe by the time FIII comes out, Molyneux will have decided to release Fable II on PC and I'll be caught up with the story.

Oops, sorry. Just call me Downer McBuzzkill. No, I still think it'll be a rad game (especially this 'liaise with the balvarines and hobbes' feature... and then become them!). I just had dreams is all. Big, puffy dreams.

I expect it'll turn out like the other two Fables: decent games that were way overhyped and failed to deliver on most anything Molyneux claimed.

But... But Fable II taught us to love...

Not enough fart emotes?

Experience points. It's the natural evolution of Fable away from traditional, numbers-based role-playing systems.

I liked Fable II but it still had a lot of problem and unfulfilled ambitions. I'm curious if they'll be able to fix any of those things with only 2 years.

...multiple spouses.

Yeah that was good, as soon as I heard that I thought "Yep, still Molyneaux". It was the map last time, so this time I'm going with...inventory, we shouldn't have to spend our time in menus equipping stuff or whatever.

Seriously though, I'm looking forward to it, Fable 2 was a lot of fun, so I'm in.

Given how slow and clumsy the menus were in Fable 2, I'm up for that.

I can't say I'm looking forward to it.

I expect the same so Molyneux is on auto-ignore. I'd like to play a game without listening to his hype for once.

Kind of your fault for buying the snake oil from the snake oil salesman. As our Former President once said, Fool Me Once ... Shame On You ... Fool me Twice ... Won't GET FOOLED AGAIN!

Fable II exceeded my expectations honestly. I expect Fable III will do the same.

And is Peter Molyneux involved in Fable III? I figured he'd still be fooling around with Milo.

I feel equally not-excited about the announcement. I played the hell of out Fables I & II, I got all 50 gargoyles in II, 51 silver keys, bought the castle, etc. But the DLC rolled around and I couldn't get back into it, unlike Fallout 3. A think it's a lack of depth in the Fable world, that while they're fun action-RPGs, they're not something I can or want to stick around and inhabit, like a Bethesda gameworld for example. So now I don't know whether to follow the news and see what's going on, or just ignore it and (hopefully) be pleasantly surprised when it arrives.

How about some better co-op, though! So Ms. Gravey and I can level and kit out our own persistent heroes in the same campaign, hm? Nope, now that I type that out, that sounds like it goes against the whole Ruler-of-Albion hook.

I agree, I am definitely not excited for it, We will see how it turns out but I don't have high hopes for it.

I wonder if that "one thing wrong" with F1 and F2 he speaks of is the requirement to use a physical controller?

This game will give you a companion. But not a dog. No. Dogs aren't nearly cute enough. No. This time around you'll have the perfect companion, a baby seal. You'll be running around swinging a sword all while this little baby seal will be purring and rubbing against your feet. Or you can club it to death. Its the perfect moral choice, feed and love your baby seal, or club it and make boots. It'll be brilliant.

Will the boots be magical?

To make them magical, you have to go through a quest in which you find the seal's parents and ask them if they like your boots and tell them you're looking for a cape to match.

If he thinks there was only one thing wrong with either of those games, he's a loony. That's what they call them over there, right? Loonies?

I really, really liked Fable II, much more so than I ever expected to. I really couldn't care about the original, though, but to me, Lionhead really delivered with Fable II. I will certainly buy Fable III on release. To me, a lot about the appeal is about the world. It's just weird enough.

The more cynical and the lower peoples expectations get for Molyneux's games the more I enjoy them. I always end up going in with low expectations and tend to get a lot of enjoyment out of them because I'm expecting so little. Does anyone really actually buy into all his hype anymore anyway?

I really enjoyed Fable II as well, though I wonder if part of that is because I hadn't been following it with anticipation. In fact, I hadn't been following it at all -- it really wasn't on my radar until it came out and the reports started coming in from the podcasters and other forum members that it was worth a look.

The challenge now, of course, will be to pull the same trick twice.

I always thought Fable's social world was insane. I mean, stand in a square, do a silly dance, fart, and the crowd cheers? Then I saw some street performers downtown and I realized that it was an eerily accurate simulation...

Considering all the complaining some people do about him, it's surprising that they still haven't learned how to spell "Molyneux".

I really liked Fable 1 and 2 but i won't be paying attention to this game until it gets closer to release... there's just no point because there aren't any details. This whole thing is just about building anticipation and, frankly, every game and development studio does it.... but for some reason Molyneux gets flak for it.

Sometimes I think about writing an account of what it might actually be like for an able-minded person living in Albion amongst the local population. People following you around constantly demanding that you dance for their entertainment, your wife and child (and just about everyone else) being sub-one dimensional in personality, unable to fulfill the emotional connection you so desperately crave. You would descend into an insane netherworld of despondency and despair, perhaps seeing how many women you could get to follow you into bed in a cynical attempt to make your wife feel SOMETHING in her jealously, and perhaps to cast aspersions upon the entire female gender (but you black out every time you get to the meaningful part!). Eventually you would be driven to suicide, nailing some strings through your limbs and designing a massive magical apparatus that would cause your corpse to do the same macabre dance over and over again until your skeletal structure collapsed entirely; none of the locals would notice the difference.

I'd read it! Fable would most certainly lend itself to one of those lengthy 'play as narrative' things all the games journos (and others) seem to be doing lately. See: Sims 3 Alice and Kev, that dude who wrote about playing GalCiv II as a race of evil bunnies, all the people doing one-life runthroughs of games like FarCry 2 or 'let's see what happens when I live as a commoner and not a hero' in Oblivion.

In fact I'm going to Google search right now and see if there's anything like this yet for Fable or Fable II.

5 minutes later...

Nothing! Surprising.

Edit: This is pretty entertaining though.

In Fable II, after I bought my first pistol I went home for a nap and thought I'd play with it a little before bed. I still wasn't great with the controls so I accidentally fired it, and even though my camera was facing the opposite direction I heard a nice shattering sound.

Years and years and years later, after I'd moved out and resold that house, and moved into the castle and become the great hero of Albion, I went back to visit. Lazy bastards still hadn't fixed the damn window.

Or the one downstairs.

Still not sure how that one got broken...

Yesterday's X10 event brings news about Fable III. Highlights:

  • Your dog is back. Yay! I loved the dog.
  • The expression system has been axed. Molyneux says that it was cumbersome in Fable II (and in Fable, I might add), and no one ever used it. It's been replaced with a "touch" system that I can't understand no matter how many times I see it described.
  • You'll have no HUD; health bars, power bars, and the like have all been removed. The screen will change color, a la Call of Duty, to indicate when you've been injured.
  • Your physique is determined by weapon choice rather than leveling.
  • Speaking of leveling: experience points are apparently out but levels are still there. I'm not sure how this works, and no one else seems to be, either.
  • Your weapons will change in response to your reputation and in-game choices. The example given is that particularly murderous characters will have swords that constantly drip blood and the like.
  • This one's for you, Clem: your weapons' appearances will change depending on how many achievements you've unlocked; the more achievements you have, the more ostentatiously your weapons will be decorated.

This is a pretty good summary from CVG.

Edit: Here's a behind-the-scenes video from 1UP that includes gameplay footage. It looks like they're running this in the Fable II engine.
