Anyone interested in a 2k football league?

I may be alone, but after spending some time today with NFL2k5 and APF2k8, I'm definitely not going to play in a Madden league. So I wanted to see if there was any interest in going old school and playing either one of these games in a league.

Maybe, I'm waiting on some Madden 10 online impressions. If it turns out to be a dud I definitely want in on this.

Always and I know Muffin would play.

Yes.

I'll play. I'll probably mix up this and Madden, so expect me to be worse than usual.

Worse at getting your games in or your level of play?

Ill be In I have to defend that title of mine.

I went back and forth with NCAA and 2k when we were doing the tournaments and playoffs last season. I was actually playing better going back and forth? I'll be doing the same thing for Madden. Madden will probably be more of an offline pursuit for me.

One problem ... I won't be available from 9/3-9/21.

You know what, I may suck HORRIBLY at APF2k8, but I'd be willing to dive in and try out a league. It'd be fun to put my own crappy team together and get beaten mercilessly by guys who know the game way better than me. It'd be a hell of a tutorial.

Would it be a draft?

We could decide on that once we had a core group. My inclination is to not do a draft and just get to playing as I want to play a football game pretty badly. But if others want to do a draft we could definitely do that.

I'm enough of a scrub that being able to take my time and assemble a team on my own would really help with the whole "barrier of entry" thing.

I'll do a draft if we go that way, but I'd love to be able to take my time without the pressure of a draft.

Is there a guide or something for how to start into putting together a team that would work in a league?

If it's not a draft I'll probably pass. I have no desire to play a team of Marino/Rice/Coates

Fair enough, Gumbie. Like I said, I was just feeling things out. I try not to set the rules. It sounds like a draft is preferable.

Ouch. I meant my level of play, which is less of a stain on my character.

I lean with DS: a draft is great fun, but it would mean a buffer between deciding to play and actually playing. That's a recipe for losing traction at this point, I think.

EDIT: Oops; stupid slow typing meant I missed the gist of a few posts there...

I will say that I actually play a ton while we draft. I just keep my team up-to-date and then continually try out new players. I found that others kind of did the same, and we would end up finding each other online and play a lot of scrimmages. So for me, I see the draft as getting down to playing some football.

So I think a draft would actually ease Farscry in better than just going toe-to-toe.

That said, there is one obstacle.

I thought a draft was where we sit down one evening and all pick our players. It doesn't work that way? What you describe sounds more appealing to me than I thought it would be.

Last time we did a draft, someone was kind enough to put all the players on an Excel Spreadsheet and we sent it aronud via Google Documents. Went swimmingly, if I remember correctly.

I am mildly interested. Let me see how this turns out before I make any decisions.

You play, and I'll play. I'm absolutely terrible at this game, particularly the kicking, but I prefer the feel over Madden.

Kicking in this game is a PitA. The most important thing seems to me to be not to have your kick be late. It's mostly okay if you swing through early, but late...well, you end up with 15 yard FG attempts.

I found, when just getting into the game, that it's good to have a stud RB. Makes life a lot easier on you. Plus, you can actually gain yardage, unlike that other football game...

Deal!

I will only play if there is a draft. I will not play if I have to deal with Ruthlessmuffin, and his Marino, to Rice, combo again.

The draft's or always fun my first pick will be just for you Ruthlessmuffin, I will take either MARINO or RICE and they will sit on the BENCH ALL DAM SEASON just so you can't have them.

NEVER EVER AGAIN!!!!!

Haha. For that reason alone we'll have a draft.

Taking potshots at Muffin is so worth it. I'm in!

Just played some more of Madden. I'm still not feeling it. Bill Harris sliders are actually not bad, but I would have enjoyed coach mode with those better than trying to actually make reads with my QB. I'm going to wait for price drops to actually buy the game, because without sliders, online play for Madden is kind of worthless at this point.

And drafting really one of the more fun parts of the game.. I think we need to find the old draft threads and release the old draft docs. If we are going to have newcomers, I'd like them to see what kind of players went when, and what kind of draft strategies we employed.

Special attention needs to be paid to positions where there are limited players. I'd like to see us nail down what is acceptable for position changes. Personally, if a player played the position in real life, feel free to stick him there. I'd say moving LB's, RB's, and DB's around should be okay. But moving a WR to DB just because we ran out of bronze DB's shouldn't be allowed. But CB's, FS's, and SS's should be interchangeable. Same with HB's and FB's, as well as OLB's and MLB's.

There was some confusion last year, so I'd like to see us make a decision on this one way or the other. Regardless of how we go, it's only fair if we all understand this going into the draft.

But I'm anxious to bring back the Hawks!

6 minute quarters on Legend?

This man speaks pure wisdom.

Okay, you folks have officially gotten me excited to play another league.

I think injuries off is still the fair way to go. We only get to pick 11 guys, and its no fun if one of them sits out the year. Although I seem to remember a certain generic QB doing a pretty good job in the first season.

PM Me your email addresses if you're new and I'll give you access to the spreadsheet. Everyone else should have access to the spreadsheet here.

Here's the new spreadsheet.

For the sake of the new spreadhseet I need everyone interested to PM me their email address and I can give you access to make changes and we can get this going.

This time around we'll start the draft from scratch. All names pulled from a hat and then do the reverse draft order, etc. like we did last time. If anyone else can think of any other relevant URLs, let me know.

I hear 6 minute quarters. Injuries on/off? What level? I'm hearing Legend.

Indeed. He is a legend around these parts.
