My daughter wants to model for Playboy *nsfw*

Damn, it took 30 posts for that to happen. *Legion*'s getting slow.

Legion wins.

It takes longer to type one handed?

She could always go the non-nude Playboy route like Olivia Munn. High-five!

I would consider this not cool (personal opinion),

You're still asleep. You honestly think someone outside of your dreams would start a thread like this?

It's only temporary. Just long enough for funny joke.

It can't be a dream. You're here.

It can't be a dream. You're here wearing clothes.

Don't be ashamed, *Legion*. I don't mind.

"Quote" and "Edit" are completely different words, imagine that.

I notice you mention the money's good, but not whether she enjoys the work. Assuming she's doing something that she enjoys & is really well paid, that's awesome & she is indeed a smart girl.

She loves it. When she was twelve she tried to talk me, and then my parents, into giving her $5000 to go to a modeling school. First off, that was pretty pricey, but mostly we were concerned that places like that tend to be very exploitative. I mean, what are you really going to get out of "modeling" school? $5000 for an introduction to a model agency?

I think it's the kind of thing she's wanted to do for a long time, but never had the opportunity. Even at her job she's a big showoff--she went from hostess to bartender to manager in record time, mostly because of her hard work and her "presence," for lack of a better term. Not just looks, but general attitude and ways of interacting with people. So she's good at what she does, and she had fun with this.

She did mention that the all-day shoot in Chicago was exhausting though!

RedJen wrote:

I'd just like to say suggest that she consider where she wants the next 30 years of her life to go from here. Once those pictures are published, she'll never be able to take that decision off of her public resume.

Yeah, that was sort of my mom's reaction. My mom was a little more extreme though. She's convinced that my daughter has a psychological problem that manifests itself in exhibitionism. Still, there are a lot of Playboy models that go on and do real world stuff, and the worst they get from it is maybe some ribbing at work if someone learns about their "sordid" past. Doctors, lawyers, female executives--wait, are there any female executives? (Pet peeve of mine about the glass ceiling, which is still firmly in place in most industries )

93_confirmed wrote:

I supposed I'd rather have her do that than be a porn star.

This reaction bothers me a little. Not a lot, don't get me wrong. To me it's kind of like me saying "Hey, my daughter is a pharmacist!" and someone saying "Well, at least she's not dealing meth!"

As publications for adults go, Playboy is one of the better managed ones. Also, every interview and book I've ever read about Playboy models says they are treated very well. Of course it could just be some kind of cult training at the Mansion where they learn to say "We're all like one big family!" I think there's more to it than that, though. Of course, Playboy makes a LOT of money off their models and their brand, and the women don't typically get long term compensation or residuals or anything like that. However, the business is managed largely by women, and I think that says something.

That said, I'm really not a huge fan of the classic "Playboy" culture, where "bunnies" are subservient to "clients". There are still corners of the Playboy empire that are a bit more seedy. I still think Playboy models are smarter than runway models though. I mean, wouldn't you rather be making money based on how you maintain your look, how you work on your body, and how well you can work with a camera team, rather than being not much more than a glorified coat rack for someone else's creations?

It's a little easy to get distracted in this thread. And am I the only one who now finds your sig even funnier?

Wow Ken. That's some mighty fine craftsmanship you've got there.

You ought to talk to her mother about making a couple more. You're good at it.

This

Epic Thread. I'm just.. er... wow.

Edit: I'm actually still nursing my coffee here, I had to rub my eyes a bit. Nope, still "wow". Wait, where am I?
Edit2: Nope, still speechless. I'm going to have to process this a bit more. Need another cup.

If I take her to the Goodjer Commandments, do I have to buy her dinner first? Oh well, off you go.

Dad to dad here:
My daughter who's still in high school gets approached by modelling agents from time to time...malls, on the street, etc...Mom usually says no although it flatters my daughter - its hard to distinguish the legit from pervs however. Its not the first time this has happened as she is also very photogenic; people have also said we should support her if she decides to pursue such a career. At her age we still have a lot of say in what she decides and frankly I prefer she focus on academics - for now she's settled on cheerleading but who's to say what she'll do when she turns 21? This thread has got me wondering - my family has a strong tradition of engineering or medicine and I personally would hate to see her opt for something of ephemeral value.

My daughter was a cheerleader through high school and into college. Her team won some competitions, too. She started in gymnastics, but she liked the social aspect of cheerleading more, since she's such a "people person."

I honestly don't think a modeling job in Playboy in her early twenties will have that much impact on a future career choice. It will affect certain jobs, and people she works with, I suppose. In my opinion, the kind of people or job where this would cause a problem aren't worth her time. This is the time of her life where she needs to go a little crazy and do the kinds of things that won't be easy to do later in life, when she has her own family to worry about.

My son is a helicopter maintenance supervisor in the Air Force. I'm not particularly pleased with his choice of vocation, because he has a brilliant mind. I think he'd do much better in some scientific or engineering profession. But he loves his job, he loves the Air Force, and he's very happy to be doing what he's doing. A lot of people aren't lucky enough to work at a job they love. Of course, if the job he loved was "bank robber," I might feel a little differently.

At some point you will have to let them go and live their own life. If your daughter is still in high school, now is definitely not the time for that. High school kids can be deceptively mature, but they still have a lot of emotional and social growing to do before they're really ready to be on their own and make their own decisions about the rest of their lives.

Being the father of a 2-year old daughter, I'm going to attempt to erase this thread from my mind for as long as I possibly can.

Seriously, though, does she get royalties or just a flat fee? Because if she wins, I'll buy an issue, as embarrassing as that might be for me at the magazine shop.

Isn't there a saying that daughters are a man's punishment for how he acted when he was young?

I'm incredibly impressed at BadKen's attitude about the whole thing. While I tend to assume the worst with regard to the porn industry (i.e. whether it's "soft" Playboy porn or hardcore stuff, they're all sleazy bastards), if his daughter has a good head on her shoulders, then she can have a lot of fun without getting dragged down.

As far as future prospects go, it probably wouldn't be an issue unless she wanted to go into politics.

Also, am I the only one a bit uncomfortable with this thread, with respect to lurching between "wow, hot girl!" and "dude, that's a friend's daughter"?

I got over it fairly quickly.

Nope, I can't reconcile the two either, and am left with 'daughter of dude I hang out with'. Well, as much as socializing on the internet is hanging out, anyway.

On the overall topic of daughters modeling nude, well, you're handling it better than I would. I'd be flipping out right about now. Good on her for enjoying what she's doing though.

"No, really, I know the girl's father. Well, no, not know as in KNOW, but from the internet....ah, nevermind. Just give me the magazine."

The career thing seems irrelevant to me. How many people are really going to find out? Even if she chooses to go into politics, it probably won't be an issue unless she's running for governor, senator or President, and at that point, she's had an amazing career already.

No matter what amount of money starts coming in, I highly suggest a financial planner. You see a lot of issues that come with win falls of money, like the lottery. Professional help now will prevent a lot of issues later.

BadKen, you have a beautiful daughter. Congrats to her for her success. A huge pat on the back to you for respecting her as an adult and her ability to make her own decisions.

I'll just add my congrats (for having a beautiful daughter and such a good, supportive attitude) to the pile.

I still haven't figured out who I should be giving high-fives to. BadKen. or the rest of us...

Neither. I know where that hand has been.

You realize this means that you can no longer buy any more Playboy magazines.
