2K Boston next big thing could be X-Com shooter

Not FPS, more like Wingcommander on XBLA, because we all know the game industey hates our childhood.

We like Ken and all, but strategy to shooter has not ended well before.

Unfortunately, I worry that an Xcom shooter will probably not light up the sales charts no matter how good it is. The license is a relative unknown to the general (especially non-pc) gaming public, and significant amount of the series' fans seem reluctant to try it on account of the shooter aspect, if this thread is any indication.

You could've said the same thing about Fallout 3.

Well played sir, well played.

Can't we just let a great game be what it is and move on to new porperties instead of shoehorning an ip into styles it was never meant to fit? I don't really care who is doing the game, I'd rather a new game with an ip meant to work within whatever genre it is set. I'd be fine even if they just used X-com as a stepping stone to the new game. Just don't call it an X-com game.

Yeah, that was a bit rant-ish, but I just don't like seeing a property ruined when it tries to become something it is not. I mean, Blizzard obviously didn't think Ghost could be a good enough shooter game and that one also had its roots in a Strategy game.

Oddly enough, while I dearly loved X-Com, and liked Terror from the Deep, I also enjoyed Enforcer. Its a decent run&gun single player shooter, with a nod toward the X-Com series. Its a different genre, so of course I expected the game play to be different. A bit short, only a few evenings worth of play, but decent. Wouldn't have been worth full-price, though.

I thought the third one, Apocalypse, to be tedious at best, never did finish it.

An X-Com shooter? That's about as likely as a Warhammer 40k shooter!

You're kidding, right?

I think he was being sarcastic, Podunk.

I think you are confusing two titles in your last entry on the list there.

XCOM Enforcer was released as a 3rd person over the shoulder shooter.
XCOM Alliance was an in development FPS with some squad mechanics. It was cancelled.

I figured as much, but I had to nuke the site from orbit to make sure.

Here is a list of the XCOM games so you guys get into perspective (bought them all):
1. XCOM UFO defense - TBS (turn based strategy)
2. XCOM Terror from the deep - TBS
3. XCOM Apocalypse - TBS/ RTS with pause (selectable battle mode)
4. XCOM Interceptor - Space ship simulator
5. XCOM Enforcer - Third person shooter (fixed from First i didn't like it )

There were two commercial XCOM like franchises I know of one of them was UFO After****** trilogy which is RTS +pause . The other one is UFO Extraterrestrials which is TBS that feels like an XCOM knockoff rather than a remake (I didn't try the updates) but it can be fun and hilarious ( soldiers missing Aliens in point blank range shooting upwards )

Thanks I fixed it. I didn't like it but my brother finished the game when he came to visit from the USA . He brought me the game as I asked and then he played it(if it has XCOM on it I buy it).

I might have an X-Com bridge for sale if you're interested...

I think this a great opportunity to reboot a franchise that lost its luster. Remember Bioshock is sort of a spiritual successor to system shock. I think Ken should be the reboot or re imagine dude.

I was hoping for new news in this thread.

I am interested to see what twist Levine would put on this franchise. I know it won't be a turn-based shooter - and I'm ok with that.

Totally kidding

I look forward to this, I think it could be really interesting if it was properly implemented. I know that some here don't like the idea of reusing IPs, but I think that if it's properly done it benefits everyone. Especially older IPs, when they aren't taking advantage of the latest "big hit."

It could turn out to be another bland, Sci Fi shooter, but if it actually implements and expands on the themes that made XCOM great it could be really interesting. Being placed into a very dangerous civilian-rich environment, where--unlike Prototype or inFamous--you are directly mandated to save as many civilians as you can, is something that is rarely done in shooters. You also have the element of balancing the risk to you and your men versus the brass and scientists wanting prisoners, weapons, and raw materials. You've ordered your soldiers to close on dangerous aliens armed only with shocksticks before, do you have the stones to do it yourself?

The "salvage" that you were managing from successful missions, as well as the improving skills of your persistent buddies (if you succeed in making them persistent) would be pretty cool, elements of Homeworld or Mechwarrior almost. Throw in multiple mission choices and a branching campaign based off of them and you could have a very deep and replayable experience.

Of course, it may just be another bland sci-fi shooter. Here's hoping it's not.
