Knock One More Off the Pile Before Heading Back to School

Pages

While this thread title doesn't really apply to me, and it probably doesn't apply to many of you, there's a dearth of official August holidays to tie this in to. So, I latched on to whatever I could get my hands on.

Summer is winding down, which usually means the releases will start picking back up. With all the delays into 2010 though we might actually have plenty of time through the rest of the year to whittle the pile down into something more manageable. With that being said, here's what's on-tap for August.

This month's Pick of the Pile is

[size=30][b]Fallout 3

"Vault 101 – Jewel of the Wastes. For 200 years, Vault 101 has faithfully served the surviving residents of Washington DC and its environs, now known as the Capital Wasteland. Though the global atomic war of 2077 left the US all but destroyed, the residents of Vault 101 enjoy a life free from the constant stress of the outside world. Giant Insects, Raiders, Slavers, and yes, even Super Mutants are all no match for superior Vault-Tec engineering. Yet one fateful morning, you awake to find that your father has defied the Overseer and left the comfort and security afforded by Vault 101 for reasons unknown. Leaving the only home you’ve ever known, you emerge from the Vault into the harsh Wasteland sun to search for your father, and the truth." (bethsoft.com)

I'm going with Ratchet and Clank. A friend from work let me borrow it and I'm having a fair amount of fun with it. I don't think I'll go collect-a-thon in it, but I'm doing some exploring.

I'm gonna smash Red Faction: Guerilla to pieces, this month.

Please add Dead Space for me Hemi. I'm past the first three chapters now, so I'm sure I can take it this month.

I don't know if I'll complete it, but add Oblivion on the 360 for me.

Picks for the month:

Wallace & Gromit: The Last Resort (episode 2)(PC/multi) - Tamed the bees of West Wallaby (bee?) street last month, and intend to do the same to some grumpy guests this month.

Xenosaga ep.2: Jenseits von Gut und Böse (PS2) - As I've stated many times before, I really dug Xenosaga episode I, but when I tried to get into episode 2 about 4 years ago, anguished wails erupted from deep within my soul. The voice acting was so atrocious that it kept me away...until now. For the sake of episodes I and III, I'm determined to grit my teeth and bear it. Luckily, things become less grating after a few hours - not sure if that's due to a genuine improvement, or me losing my mind. Also, the visuals are way upgraded, the new battle system seems ok overall, and there are still big things blowing up occasionally. I'm 14 hours in, and about 20% done so far.

Tron 2.0 (PC) - This one's been on my "I'm gonna play this aaaaannyyy day now! Really looking forward to it!" shortlist for years now (it was a 2003 release). Time to sit down and do it! A few levels in and the visual style and overall presentation are really impressive. Monolith has nailed the feel of Tron, and I don't see many ways it could be done better, even with today's far more powerful hardware. Getting Bruce Boxleitner back to reprise his role is also really cool!

If things go well this month (and I have faith that they will), I'll probably add Silent Hill (PS1) and/or Indiana Jones & the Fate of Atlantis (PC) as well! I'm 21/25 on self-imposed deadlines so far this year

It's The Witcher for me, now that the 1.5 and the Director's Cut patches are here.

I'm going to go with No More Heroes for the Wii this month. I haven't given that little machine much game time lately.

Right..time to try this again.

I'm in the mood for some high quality RPG playing adventurin'...

....unfortunately Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2 are a ways off yet, so I'll have to settle for some reasonably good quality RPG adventurin' instead

So I'm going to give Drakkensang another shot I think. It's that or Two Worlds...and I'm really not in the mood for voice acting *that* bad right now.

Put me down for Far Cry 2 (360). I got a head start the last few days after I finished Little Big Planet. So far, I can't say that it's a perfect game but I completely respect what they were going for and what they made. In other words, my opinion is probably just like everyone else's here.

Might as well put me down for the Battlefield: Bad Company single player. I've started it, and it's a lot of fun. Unless the multiplayer distracts me, I'll be adding another to the list soon.

Call of Duty 4. Hello 2007!

I too, am striding confidently into the wilderness of 2007 with Bioshock (PC). This time I will finish you. After a couple of hours yesterday, I feel like I'm enjoying it a lot more than my previous attempt too despite the shocking mouselook.

Far Cry 2 for me too. I've sunk a lot more time into that last month than I did Ghost Recon (hence me failing) and was having a lot more fun with it. Of course, I'll be playing it for the pc, since I refuse to acknowledge the existence of any other platforms for FPS games.

Prince of Persia for the 360 is going down this month.

Ok though last month's plans went down in flames, this month I'm switching gears and...

Fallout 3 (Multi) - going finish my first playthru
Lego Indiana Jones (Multi) - going for 100%.
FEAR 2 (Multi) - going to finish the sp campaign

The 360 is my platform of choice, but all multiplatform titles for me.

Still playing X3: Terran Conflict. I have no idea how I'll determine if I'm finished. Maybe when I finish all the racial plot missions.

I'll finish up Rune Factory Frontier (Wii) this month for sure.

Actually, you might as well put me down for this game in September, too.

Alright, my time is being spent on Fable for X-Box.
I'm finally getting around to working steadily on my pile. I'm so excited!

I'm making a serious run at Bully: Scholarship Edition on the 360 this month.

I'm also going to take a crack at Killer7 on the GameCube, which I started last night... but since I'm already having trouble near the beginning of the first mission, I am not optimistic.

I'm hoping to put Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords (DS) to bed. I expect that I'm pretty far in, as I've been playing on and off for more than a year.

Alright, I'm really gonna beat Metroid Prime 3 this month. Fo realz, yo.

Penumbra: Overture, because Backloggery told me to and Friend Backloggery knows what's best.

Well, that was fast. Turns out I was already most of the way through the game. I'll be able to polish off Black Plague and Requiem with time to spare in the month.

My copy of FFX died in july, preventing me from reaching that target. Who knows if I can do it this month.
Put me down for Shadow of the Collosus. I'm really digging it so far.

Gun, Bully and Manhunt (PC) all before August 30th!

(knocks on wood)

Mmm. I am also going to shoot for Fallout 3 (1st time through). Not sure how reasonable that is given all the various guests were hosting this month. But someone has to put down the molerat infestation that took Elysium.

If I commit myself to Shadow here too, can I be shamed into finishing it?

We can ostracize with the best of 'em. Have at it!

Put me down for Saints Row 2 and Mass Effect, both for 360.

I picked up Saints Row for cheap last week and I've been just plowing through it. The gameplay is nothing stellar and it's pretty standard gang banger fair story and setting wise, but the variety of missions and activities in that game keep it fresh.

And I swear Mass Effect will fall this month, it sickens me that I have yet to finish this Bioware game. Jade Empire still haunts me for that exact reason.

My pile has grown substantially in the past week. I expect August will see me get through Fable 2, wrap the remaining 2 DLC packs for Fallout 3 and speed through Stranglehold. Sure, Stranglehold isn't supposed to be a great game, but I found something tremendously satisfying about the demo and I'm happy that I finally nabbed a copy to play through.

I'm still hoping to complete the campaign in Gears of War 2, but my co-op buddy has been so busy that it may be months yet before we finish.
