Idle F***in' Thumbs Podcast

So I just watched the best scene ever put on film (NSFW) and immediately thought of this thread.

Awesome. I knew exactly what that was before I clicked the link.

That is such a great show.

I've never watched any of it past season 1 though. Not quite sure why.

Get on it! It only gets better!

Damn you gentlemen I'm at work!

It's just so... long. I don't have it in me to start in on something that goes on for another four full seasons right now.

Too many other things to watch.

And back on topic: the latest Idle Thumbs cast is good funny. I just got to listen to it this afternoon. And hey, I can't even remember if they swore or not

But any other thing that you could watch pales in comparison to The Wire. Seriously. It's like The Sopranos, except smart.

I'd have to concur with this. Honestly, no, there is no other thing to watch.

Lobster, i suggest you skip the Idle News Podblast released to today. It will most certainly burn your virgin ears.

Chris said in the podblast today that he was going to try to tone down on the cussing because of some forum complaints (maybe from here?), which ironically he started to cuss more.

Hmmm, dunno I MAY start listening to this... there's this weird voice in the back of my head I keep tuning out but on some subliminal level I think it's trying to tell me that Idle Thumbs is good

I listened to a few more episodes and have decided that the guys are funny and insightful enough to put up with the profanity.

I'm glad you stuck it out -- I also roll my eyes at "kids these days and their swearing" (and had some discussion about that back when I started a thread on how the CGW/GFW podcast had lost me), but us fuddy duddies have to be careful not to miss the gems mired in the profanity.

The Idle Thumbs guys are very smart and intellectual, and the podcast even seems to stray into experimental art forms, such as when they'll cut up the phrase "video games" from their intro song into quarter-second clips and intersperse them throughout a discussion as an insta-break (a verbal comma?), or when the computer voice corrected all the inaccurate statements in the podcast.

There's so much brainpower going on here that I've concluded these are mature people sitting around shooting the sh*t, sort of literally, and not 12 year olds trying to impress the 13 year olds. It's now a favorite podcast of mine (and I think I found out about it in a thread on podcasts here).

This also reminds me that I've meant to update that GFW thread, so I'll go do that now...

I did take the Drunken Gamers Podcast of my list. Really low quality in content and presentation.

I think you should avoid Idle Thumbs. It would probably just go over your head.

That sounds like a challenge Mogg! But I won't sink to your level

Thanks! When I have the time, I do like getting more elaborate with the editing. Sometimes I'm going for higher-concept stuff, and sometimes I'm just trying to introduce variety into a densely-packed section without just overusing the straight "video games!" sting.

Yeah, I fell off that wagon last week. This week! (Maybe!)

Don't try too hard. Some of us find that those words can be quite funny when they're not overused.

What can I say. Deep down, part of me will always be 13.

Despite the warnings on the latest 'crapfest', it was pretty great. Ah Dragon Age, and your 'surprise me'.

I can also care less. Meaning that you can deteriorate quite a bit before I stop listening. The actual swearing though, that I couldn't care less about.

I actually disagree with that, I really like there podcast and some of the things they do with features and interviews but also just I like the personalities of the host.

I think they really do a great job wit their reviews. And I laugh a lot when I listen to them. They kind of come off as a Tarantinoish take on gaming podcasts. And not just for the bajillion F-Bombs, but for some really interesting tangents their discussions take. It's a much smarter take on games than their demeanor and Podcast title suggests.

Agreed. On the July 17th episode of DGR, at about the 11:30 mark, a voicemail caller proclaims that after years of GWJ being his favorite podcast, DGR was now his favorite. He used the analogy of trading in his wine for whiskey. In the comments for that episode, another listener of both GWJ and DGR said:

lemon wrote:

Hard to explain, some strange videogame yin yang thing, drunk vs. sober, goofy vs. smart, funny vs. serious. From a shy fan, you guys and GWJ are great together and thank you for combined awesomeness.

To which John replied: "Judging the by many reader emails and voicemails we’ve received, GWJ has replaced Broadcast Gamer as the yin to our yang."

The reason I post all of this is because I feel the same. For me, GWJ and DGR complement each other quite well. I guess it helps that I have no problem with profanity. To me it's just adults using adult language. In fact, I believe that if the DGR guys, with their humorous/not-taking-themselves-seriously style, did not use profanity the way they do, their podcast wouldn't be as good as it is. That's right, I said it. The F-bombs make the DGR podcast better IMO, not worse. Even if I'm not interested in the game they're talking about, I still enjoy listening because of their personalities. Usually, if you listen long enough, one (or all) of them will go off into a tangent about something, and I'll bust out laughing.

So who is going to deconstruct the latest podblast to determine whether they were lying, telling the truth, lying about telling the truth, or telling the truth about lying?

I pity the person who tuned into this as their first episode and immediately got lost in the enigma wrapped inside a fortune cookie, or however that goes!

Cool. I'd be pretty impressed if he actually read this thread and took it to heart, though I do wish he'd speak up.

Again, I'm not offended. Just a little irritated.

If you look up less than a dozen posts Lobster you'll see Remo posted... Skimmer

Oh. Umm...

Hi, Chris Remo! Thanks for making the great show and attempting to make it easier on my sensitive little ears.

So that's how you post so much. And here I've been reading the threads like a chump.

I wouldn't choose Lobs as a role model. That is a path that leads to madness.
