Idle F***in' Thumbs Podcast

I love the Idle Thumbs podcast. It's just funny. I've even gone back to read back episodes because of the comedy. I've found them much less offensive than other gaming podcasts where the guys sound more obnoxious.

And they talk about PC games, wich is not common these days.

I'm not sure if they liked or not Trine.

Lobster, just don't come to Ireland. In fact, probably best to avoid the British Isles all together :).

Also In Bruges is a cracking little film.

Just listened to their latest episode - pretty good I thought. Didn't seem overly sweary to me, at least in this episode. Certainly MUCH less sweary than the Drunken Gamers podcast (and like Kabutor says, they acknowledge the existence of the PC, which is always nice).

They should use the Certis self-edit and say "Mo-F*ckin'"

Oh, and Podunk's xylophone would pwn their harpsichord, any day.

I've started listening to the Drunken Gamers, and they do a pretty top notch job, as well. But Jesus f*cking Christ, don't let Lobster listen to it! I have not heard Idle Thumbs, and do plan on trying it, but I don't think you can drop more F-Bombs than they do. Al Pacino blushes when listening to these guys. But they really do some nice reviews, and are pretty funny as well. Thanks to Shawn for getting me to give them a try!

I listen to quite a few podcasts, and this is the one I've come close several times to hitting the unsubscribe button because of the quantity of F-bombs. But, every time this happens, they seem to later recognize it and attempt to back off a little. I suppose I give them a little bit of a break because of their drunkenness

I am not against swearing, but like Mobster, it drives me crazy when people substitute the F-bomb for ANY other word multiple times per minute.

Hey folks, Chris Remo from Idle Thumbs here. Shawn pointed this thread out to me. We don't mean to be super-sweary! Sometimes before we record I try to tell myself to be a little more self-conscious, but then as soon as we start I end up completely forgetting and just having a conversation with Jake and Nick in the same way I'd have a conversation if we weren't recording a podcast, which sometimes includes swearing and/or poop jokes. I do think we have our share of thoughtful discussion, though. In any case, the combination of the two may not be for everyone. But thanks for checking it out! We appreciate it.

The above comment (along with the previously posted praise) has convinced me that you are f*cking awesome. I have now downloaded all of your podcasts! You're coming with me to work, now : )

Sounds like the Sharkey appearance on Listen Up from a couple of weeks ago.

I absolutely hated that episode. I had to turn it off when Sharkey went on his 10th expletive filled pissy tirade because someone liked something that didn't measure up to his grand incredible god-like standards. I twittered something like "No one swears that much except in high school or Kevin Smith movies." after I finally gave up on listening to it.

Yeah, which is another point: if that podcast bothers you, don't EVER listen to kevin smith's podcast (SModcast). But if you don't care, and you are prone to repetitive swearing syndrome too, then it's a great one. Not gaming though - movies and whatever weird porn Smith has been watching that week.

GWJ is the only podcast I have been listening to about gaming, but I might check out some of the other ones that people have talked about on this forum because my commute recently got much longer and I'm going to run out of back-up SModcasts at some point.

I figure if it bothers you, you should stop listening to it. I mean, you don't enjoy it, and they clearly aren't going to change, so why continue?

I sometimes skip an episode. One was just really derailed and everything seemed so f-ing funny to them. Especially one person in there. There are some ppl that I have a hard time with as well that way. Luke on the 1Up sometimes did it too, ridicule it all and make no point, except derailing the podcast. But then again, sometimes he did come up with very valid points, that was when I liked him best. Garnet Lee I have the same problem with as you have Lobster. It seems the podcast is there for him, to tell the world what he thinks and he wants to dominate the podcast therefor. On Tekzilla though, I do like him again. But there is a heavy weight (tech wise): Patrick Norton. There is a great interaction there.

Back on topic. Just pick and choose your episodes. If it starts derailing into the f-word over and over again, that's when I turn it off. Even the f-word can be valuable when you want to make a point. Repeating it without reason is just a level of stupidity that I cannot tolerate.

It is my belief that the F-word is the greatest word in the English language. It's a verb, it's a noun, it's an adjective...there's nothing this word can't do. If you want to add power to anything you say, F-it-up a little. No one has ever been injured by hearing a word, but it's made plenty of people smile.

Embrace the power!

I've been listening through your backlog over the past few weeks and I have your stupid and concentratedly awesome theme-song stuck in my head on repeat most mornings. You bastards.
"Games. Video Games. Video Games. Video Gaaames. Video Games."
DIE!

Keep up the great work!

The Ballad of John Riccitiello is absolutely brilliant and Hilarius. For those who haven't heard it you can find the stand alone mp3 file here.

... I've just realized that I spent the last 8 hours playing Defense Grid and listening to Idle Thumbs. So now I'm done with all the episodes will have nothing fresh to listen to for my 4 hour drive tomorrow morning! DAMN IT!

I was listening to the latest episode on my drive home, and I counted three F-bombs in the first 17 or so minutes from Chris. That's not too out of line, in my opinion.

None of them seemed like he was using the word instead of collecting his thoughts, either.

So on the train today I listened to a number of the 10 minute clip shows. I really am digging this more and more.

Listen to Episode 29, and you will be hooked for sure.

I listened to the latest - it's on my "must listen" list now. I think ListenUp has just gotten demoted to the bench. I only wish I had found this podcast sooner. So, thank Lobster for bringing this to my attention, even though it was inadvertent.

I listened to a few more episodes and have decided that the guys are funny and insightful enough to put up with the profanity. It still gets under my skin from time to time but since it's definitely just a verbal pause, he swears a lot less when his thoughts are collected. Would be nice if he'd just let the OTHERS talk when his thoughts AREN'T collected, or if he'd notice that no one else drops f-bombs anywhere near as much, but I can't really cry for his blood. He is a smart, insightful guy and when he's NOT carpetbombing the podcast I find what he has to say interesting.

They're also great at inside jokes. I've started saying, "Hooray for you!" to teammates during L4D matches.

f*ckin' A.

The Giant Bombcast made me laugh out loud today.

That is all.

I think the idle "f*ckin'"s make everything he says much, much funnier, as well as making him seem more charming. (Unlike Lobster, I mean that sincerely.)

Also, yes, harpsichord. Listen if only for the harpsichord. And the "puffins!"

I love idlethumbs because it's more freeform and feels more relaxed than GWJ. IT is like my life in a way

I've been through like 8 or 9 episodes of Idle Thumbs now and can't think of any instance where any of them was doing anything even remotely resembling "carpetbombing" the podcast with the f-bomb. That strikes me as a very extreme exaggeration.

I'm tempted to listen to the most recent episode to keep count of the number of times they swear. I'd wager it's about ten times in the whole hour and a half or however long the episode is. Maybe 15.

If you can't handle that I'm not sure how you watch R rated movies or TV shows on HBO and Showtime.

I think you need to watch Deadwood. If you get through the whole series you probably won't even notice when people swear for months afterward.

Because in R-rated movies, with written dialog that has no need for verbal pauses, the f-bombs mean something. Even if they aren't particularly profound or useful, they are used as actual words. I'm not a sensitive, pure little child that can't handle harsh language, I just get annoyed by ANY abuse of the language.

Like I said, it depends on what Chris is talking about. If he knows what he's saying and how he wants to say it, no f-bombs. If he's shooting from the hip he needs to stop and collect his thoughts, and that's when he starts. In some shows he's very organized and doesn't need that crutch at all. In others, it seems he can't go a single sentence without it. In one of the episodes in the 20 you can hear it click on like a switch; he's being very articulate about a subject, not pausing at all, and then suddenly he digresses and starts dropping f-bombs left and right.

I want to make it clear that this is more of a matter of a pet peeve than me just being sensitive.

I didn't even realize IT had swearing in it until I read this thread.

I've been listening to Idle Thumbs for a while, and it's my current favorite. I really appreciate that as a whole, they seem pretty dialed into the reality of game development, which is pretty rare on the game journalist side of the fence. They're also funny as hell sometimes, and I get their stupid songs and catchphrases stuck in my head. All weekend, I've had the Trine song they sang running through my mind.

I liked their Up song about killing the snake.

I also like "WizaaaaaAAAAaaaaaaAaaaaaaaaAAAAAAaaaaaaard!"

Yeah, the humor in Idle Thumbs is, actually, pretty clever and fun. "WizaaaaaAAAAaaaaaaAaaaaaaaaAAAAAAaaaaaaard!"

I listen to 4 game Podcasts regularly, and Idle Thumbs makes me laugh the most.

Well, Jake is a game developer. He works for telltale games. Remo works for gamasutra, which focuses on the business aspects of video games. So that helps a lot.

They used to do songs more often. I wish they would do more. You can listen to the songs on their website.
