New Mechwarrior coming

News and teaser at Shacknews

Oh, please don't be like the XBox games. PLEASE!

Please please please be a classic mech piloting sim! PLEASE!

What, you guys don't like a generic 3rd person action game with a Battletech theme?

Pirahna Games?

Why would Smith & Tinker buy it back from MS just to give it away again?

Piranha's game catalog isn't exactly filling me with hope.

Well, same could be said for the devs of Ghostbusters and Batman: Arkham Asylum (jury's still out on the last one), but maybe all Piranha needs is the right title to embrace.

I have a bad feeling that they're taking some of the work done for Transformers and applying Mechwarrior to it. Paint me highly skeptical.

Second that!

Yeah... looks kind of bleak. Was the Transformer game they did any good?

It was as generic as generic movie licensed games get.

Please be a SIM please be a SIM. Go back to your roots damit! I am going to be so angry if its a generic 3rd person action game.

I am hoping MechWarrior Living legends gets released soon.

This...

...is the reason why this doesn't fill me with hope. We heard all along that Smith & Tinker would be making a new Mechwarrior game, that they had started on it and so forth. For it to suddenly go to another studio without announcement (well I guess this one counts) or rumors of them having turned their attention to another of the golden IP's they have, just somehow smells all sorts of fishy to me.

Checking the MWLL FAQ, I ran across this:

" Secondly, those players with higher ranks won't be after the new players as they will have very little to gain from killing them and more so be jeopardizing their entire team. Players with high ranks will get the greatest benefit from killing opponents with a higher rank level. Based on this it's likely that you'll be fighting others with a similar rank. "

*shakes his head* This is grossly unrealistic. Do they play online at all? Unless there is an active penalty for doing so, of course the higher ranked players will slaughter the lower rank players. Gleefully. Repeatedly. Unrepentantly. Without end.

I want this game to be good so badly it hurts.

I have little hope though...

I don't know of anything that would keep me from purchasing another Mech Piloting Sim.
EDIT:

Jordan Weisman, founder of MechWarrior creator FASA, announced in 2007 that his new company Smith & Tinker had licensed the electronic rights to the MechWarrior property from Microsoft--which had bought FASA--and intended to "surprise and delight old fans."

This gives me hope.

I going to be quitely excited by this until the point when a demo is released and I hate it.

There doesn't seem to be any mention about persistence anywhere. I think they're talking on a per-round or per-campaign basis more than with a persistent character.

I fear the same.

Awe I want a mechwarrior mmo dangit...

Come on Mech Commander 2, please be Mech Commander 2. Or an RPG, that would rock my world as well.

I am filled with hope and trepidation.

I hope the hope wins.

I'm not sure this has the possibility to be an okay game. It's either going to rock, or it'll suck horribly. I'm hoping for the former.

I'm hoping you get to ride in a giant robot with missile guns. PEW PEW! VROOOM!

Isn't there already a Mech Commander 2?

If you're going to be so picky you're never going to enjoy ANY game. Except the ones with giant robots and missile guns.

Pew pew.

Your wish has been granted. It's free too!

Or an RPG, that would rock my world as well.

That would be the ultimate twist, having it be an actual Mechwarrior game.

Mech Commander 3 please!

Nice, downloading MC2.

Ages ago (when I was a young man) I remember seeing a Mechwarrior PC game in EGA with polygon/vector robots and knowing PC gaming was for me.

I hope the franchise sees a worthy revival. It was really a genre unto itself for many years with the Earth/Starsiege and Heavy Metal(?) lines in competition.

I remember that game! You were the leader of the mercenary group, the Flaming Aces!

Hey, stop giggling!

As much as I loved Mechwarrior, I liked Heavy Gear a little better. It always seemed a little more realistic. I guess the problem I always had with Battletech in general (and I may be over thinking this) is that you have vehicles that are as heavy as an M1 tank, go half the speed, and with weapons that are small range (on the modern battlefield) at best. I always wondered what a modern long range missile or an AP sabot round would do to one of these beasts.

Even so, my Battletech/Mechwarrior gaming goes all the way back to the original Mechwarrior and The Crescent Hawks Inception.
