Arma 2 Catch All

I think it's performance poll time.

Answer the following 3 questions:

1. What is your hardware setup? (CPU, RAM, and video card. In that order!)
2. What resolution are you running at? (And what fillrate, if not 100%?)
3. What average framerate do you get? (If you still have the demo, run the Benchmark in the single player scenarios)

Hardware:

1. Q6600 OC to 2.8GHZ, 4gb Ram, 8800GT 512mb.
2.1600x1200, 100% fillrate. Most graphic settings normal or low. Shadows Off.
3. Anywhere from 25-50fps, averaging about 30.

Q6600 oc'd to 3.2ghz. 4gigs ram 4890ati.

I get 40-60 with all options on high and veryhigh.

Other then the tearing but that is prob me breaking this new card.

Q6600 - 8gigs - nvidia 260GTX
I have most of my settings on High except for shadows at medium. and am playing at 1920x1200
Running on Vista Ultimate 64-bit.

I would say I am in the 40-60 range.

Other things that I have going with game are

-TrackIR 4 with trackclip pro
-MS Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 Joystick
-Astro A40 gaming headset

Things look pretty good for me - I have a logitech g9 mouse that I need to turn the sensitivity down on (mouse movement is a bit odd in the game). Still needs a patch in my opinion (lots of people floating in the air)

Not to let Legion derail this thread!

Last night was a blast, we had 11 people at the highpoint, not counting Robanybody and his friend who could not seem to connect.

We played that Hijack Mission a few times and attempted a harder assault a few points mission.

The Hijack mission is really trivial now with that many people and that we have it pretty much memorized now.

We attempted the harder mission at the end and we need to work out some more coordination on fresh eyes i think.

After the game broke up Certis popped in and we fired up a small skirmish of the Hijack mission. Which proved to be a challenge with 4 or 5 people still. I am glad to see some more people joining us last night hope to see you every night!

We will need to figure a better way to do these games as it is getting pretty crowded for a listen server.

Great fun to be had by all. Also there is a cool mod called Domination that if we can find a light public server (no problem usually) we can fit a bunch of us on. The cool thing is that it really requires air assaults and air support to win against the AI. You fight across the whole single player world. For those new to ARMA2 - it isnt COD4 or BF2. You really must work together in teams and be patient. You cant just run full tilt in all your "battle rattle" and expect not to be detected and then shot. The controls are "mushy" - I think intentionally so that you cant do an instant turn and shoot etc... Also - bullets and grenades follow real world trajectory paths and can pass through light cover and concealment. Finally, take the time to do the early on Boot Camp - it helps.

Edit: There is a decent walk through in this months PC Gamer for making maps for ARMA2. Additionally, I highly recommend reading the manual and the guide listed in the previous page on ARMA2.

Wired, THIS MISSION looks pretty fun, we should give it a shot!

What are you using for cooling wired? I've got a pretty beefy heatsink and fan on my CPU (The beefiest I've ever seen actually) and my CPU runs at about 60 degrees under load, so I don't want to OC any further. Do you have any Northbridge cooling going on?

Ha I downloaded that last night to give a run through to see if we should rock it tonight.

http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/node/4578 < my graphic troubles are my fault.

New card should come today or tomorrow hopefully.
Maybe on try number 3 I wont break it.

Your linked thread confuses and scares me Wired.

Given all the enthusiatic comments, does that mean its safe for me to forego my usual practice of waiting for 6 months after a game comes out before buying it?

Rhetorical question. The answer would be "Yes!"

For the demo:

1. What is your hardware setup? Core i7 920, 6GB, 8800GT
2. What resolution are you running at? 1920 x 1080 (never changed the fillrate)
3. What average framerate do you get? Haven't run the benchmark yet but in FRAPS I range from 50-30. Medium settings. (Changing the pre-rendered frames eliminated allot of the mouse lag)

Loaded the demo. Looks nice, but it's unplayable on my PC. No funds to upgrade or buy a new rig. Oh well.

1. i7-940 @ 3.8 / 12 Gigs Ram / 4870x2 2 Gigs Ram
2. 2560 x 1600
3. Running FRAPS and it seems to be capped at 30 fps - draw distance can bring this down. I'm running it at about 2000 meters. At least it's a smooth 30....

Anyone know if there is a cap on framerate? Vsync on/off doesn't seem to do anything one way or the other.

Yeah, sorry about that. I was able to get on another server for a little while, but the connection seemed to be pretty flaky all night. I'm on FIOS, so it should be a zippy connection, oh well. I'll try again next time everybody is on.

BTW the server I hopped on after was playing Domination and it was pretty cool. I jumped in as an artillery/rescue soldier, and bringing the arty was super cool.

Running...

1.) Core i7-920 2.66 GHz, GTX 260 896MB, 6 GB RAM
2.) Running at 1440x900
3.) Pulling solidly 30-50 FPS, generally on the higher end.

Had a blast last night gents, and can't wait to try some of the other missions, especially that Comm Tower one again. I think Domination may be a little larger than what i'd personally enjoy, as i'd prefer something smaller, but once more missions are released, I can see this game having a good long life. A 4v4 or 6v6 match in a small town or a city could be a real blast.

And SpyNavy's entirely correct. The game's difficulty level on anything higher than Cadet is absolutely punishing and unforgiving, as anyone who was playing last night remembers when we got flanked and fragged with rather astonishing speed.

Ok after the issues with listen servers and interest capping that capacity for coop.
I had a friend of a friend hook us up with a small 20 man private COOP server. It should be up and configured for us by this evening. I am going to load it up with Hijak and a number of small coop missions as well as the big domination map.

We might be a bit to small to run domination by ourselves but it might be fun to try.

I don't' think we will have any problem handling domination with small squads. If we are coordinating effectively we should be able to whittle down a town's defenses and effectively take down objectives.

Yeah Domination can be done with 10 people - or even as small as 8 (pushing it). Speaking of which - I am off to play Domination. Love me some Blackhawks.

Has anyone hooked up a joystick to fly? Arma 2 seems to recognize the joystick, but it doesn't accept any input from it. However, I noticed I could go in and manually set up each button on the joystick to. There has to be an easier way.

Damn work and keeping me from some sweet Arma action. Thanks for putting up with my newbie-ness, had a great time last night. I'll definitely be up for some more tonight.

I know spy, lactose, and stylez have I am not sure about others.

Last night's best line

Tkyl "hey I will fly us out of here"
Everyone "ok"
Tkyl "how to I turn it on?"
Everyone "get the f*ck out!"

I laughed for 15 minutes after that.

Hey, I can't help it that I've been too busy to do the tutorial. This isn't a simulator or anything... oh, wait. And at least I managed to land it after turning the helicopter vertical. When I get back after this weekend, I'm going to work on flying. I'm actually generally really great at flying helicopters in games if I have my joystick hooked up properly.

Yeah, there isn't that I know of. I have a Saitek X45 and spent an hour just setting up my buttons/throttle/etc. The nice thing is, ARMA II supports an incremental throttle, which the first one didn't. It was either all or nothing on the throttle.

I setup the joystick manually - works like a charm

I also bailed out of the chopper when the pilot asked how to turn it on. The take off was... interesting.

On a side note - anyone try playing this game with an xbox 360 controller? (for everything not just flying)

Recognized My Saitek Cyborg Evo but I had to configure manually within the game.

I gave it a go for infantry, it works, but for Arma I feel a keyboard and mouse are an absolute necessary as the pad just doesnt have enough buttons and is no where near as precise as you need to be when aiming.

I absolutely love it for flying helicopters/planes though, tanks and land vehicles not so much.

I actually really like my Cyborg Command Unit. It puts all my main buttons right on where I have easy access, and it's very ergonomic, for me at least. There are some functions I still need to reach over the keyboard for, but not very common ones. The only problem I have is there is some conflict in the programming software with my flight stick (which blows my mind since they're both Saitek, but whatever,) and I can't program the buttons on the stick when I'm running the Command Unit. All the buttons still work, and I can program them in game, but I can't do the custom profile in Windows.

I'm using my 360 controller. The keyboard is right in front of me in case I need something, but so far the only thing that comes up is hitting V to clambor over something. Also, the sticks don't seem to move the map around, so I'm using the mouse to look around the map.

I can't seem to remap the controls at all though. I'm probably just doing it wrong. The default config is nice, but I don't need the map on the right bumper since I'm using the mouse to navigate it anyway. I'd like to make the right bumper be the Look toggle, but whenever I try to map it, a "" shows up instead of the 360 controller right bumper signifier.

Precision is not an issue.

Worst part of precision is getting tired. Darn marines need lots of breaks.

Glad you went ahead and did this Wired, I am really busy right now and don't have much time to mess with the server.

I did have a question for Stylez: I got my new Trackir5, and love it. Big improvement over the last version. The lean with trackir does not seem to be as responsive as it should be. Did you make any tweaks to your setup at all to work better with ArmA?
