Arma 2 Catch All

Turning down the post-processing to Low or Off should make a difference. They went way overboard with the various effects (HDR/Depth-of-Field/Motion Blur) and the post-processing level controls all of them.

Was this multiplay on Jake's server? That didn't work out to well, and I think we choose a bad mode to start with. All the base-building stuff, buying equipment, capturing locations, large maps filled with AI soldiers, it was way too confusing and chaotic when we just have four people or so around. Other modes might work, "Close Quarters Battle" sounds promising; or we may want to stick to co-op games.

Finished downloading this from Steam late last night. Off the bat, none of the terrain or building textures would show and many renderings just looked like big pointy polygons. Come to find out, the issues where related to newer Nvidia drivers, having 8GB of RAM, and running in Vista. A trifecta for failure which I was a part of. Running the game with "-winxp" fixed this issue. Been going through the training missions trying to get a feel for things. Interaction with weapon crates was buggy for me during the AT training. For some reason, I couldn't get a Javelin from the crate and the guys from the MOUT course would run up the hill and bum rush me. No clue what was going on there... On my 3rd or 4th try, I finally completed the AT portion and headed to the MOUT course which I enjoyed by cleaning out the town my first try. The biggest hurdle for me has been learning all the different keys. Some of the training missions really are not straight forward and I find myself often flipping through the control configurations or alt-tabbing to read the PDF manual mid-mission. Really wish I had a printed manual. I've been figuring out how to fly today attempting to map all my keys and get my X52 properly setup. I've been having lots of issues mapping anything with a Control key in my X52 software like landing gear and flaps (works fine in IL-2 and BF2). Sometimes the mappings work, sometimes they don't (like flaps up "CTRL-L" just turning on lights instead). I'll probably resort to changing the bindings in game. The helicopters definitely have a learning curve, which I like (trying to shake my BF2 tendencies here). I've experienced a few issues too where my joystick will seem to lose center and be severely out of trim, mostly with fixed wing aircraft. I'll admit this could have been due to me constantly alt-tabbing to read manuals and work on my X52 profile. All that aside, looks like this game has a lot of promise and look forward to joining you all in game in the future.

edit: Fixed my X52 centering issues. Arma had bound my slider to my ailerons and a rotary to my rudders for some reason. All is smooth now!

Am I a dinosaur for wondering when/if/where this will be available in retail? Yes, I'm fail - I know.

Amazon is showing a retail box release date of July 4th.

Why do you respawn right where you died? Seems kind of broken, makes the game just turn into mass spawn killing. Still, I guess I had some fun in one multiplayer match where we all organized into a bunch of Humvee's and totally made it impossible for the other team to survive for more than a second after spawning

Is steam auto patching this up?

I've been trying out some of the other MP missions and the CQB one is perfect for just jumping into the action without all the command and base building of CTI (Capture the Island) mode. I assume there will be lots of community made missions that will get created for different types of setups.

Am I the only one doing the SP campaign at the moment? It does a fair job of easing you into the combat and controls.

I started it this morning. It does ease you in pretty well. Nicely done so far.

Where are people playing? Everytime I check Stan's its empty.

I've been playing the campaign and some of the scenarios. I think for full PvP MP we will have to see if enough people pick it up to hit the proper critical mass to have a game night. Otherwise there is always co-op which people can host on their own. For now it is probably best to jump in Vent and set up co-op games that way.

Ok in the campaign can you set your own waypoints? It really is a bit overwhelming right now trying to start looking for this guy.

For those at home right now try this out. I'm curious if it works:

In the nvidia control look for
"Maximum pre-rendered frames".
Set this always to "1" see if it's better.

Okay this actually does work. It was even better for me when I turned it down to 0. Now I dont feel as much mouse lag and I feel more of this inertia they wanted.

My FPS is worse than it was in the demo. Trying to figure out why.

Can we change the locked server to COOP then? This will allow people to play. Pred and I played CTI mission and it isnt great with 2 people and a bunch of bots, the bots that arent in your team dont do much. Thanks!

Unfortunately not at the moment, I've been trying to find a way to do this, but the documentation is severely lacking and the forums have been no help. I actually don't think you can run the campaign co-op from a dedicated server. If you do jump on the server and want a more playable scenario, set it to the Close Quarters Battle. It is pretty much drop in and fight - no building or long hikes.

Is there still a steep learning curve? I have yet to execute a successful campaign in ArmA 1.

I just played through the first mission on regular difficulty, and it was pretty much a cakewalk compared to ArmA and OF. You get to go all silenced and night-visioney right off the bat to boot

My favorite quote from a review so far has been "This game is for the patient..."

Of course, that is just one line taken out of context. But, it reinforces my fears about this game, especially giving my frustrations with the first.

Yeah this is what Pred and I were playing last night. No hikes is good, but all the AI guys that were not controlled by us were just prone near the base so it was not really interactive.

Great fun this afternoon with Tannhauser and Tkyl. M24 is the win.

They say that because this game is a simulation not a game. If you are going to war you would not grab an mp5 and kevlar jacket and then go running like crazy shooting and jumping around to dodge bullets. When playing the game you have to move SLOWLY, as one bullet can kill you. Also stay in the shadows of things as it makes it very hard to spot you.

Kept telling myself that my 8800GT was still a contender.

I pulled the trigger today on a 4890.

I really dig this game.

You and me both Wired. My 8800GT just doesn't cut it for this one. Got a 280GTX on the way. Hopefully I'll be able to bump the detail up past low/medium.

I was reading a lot of issue with arma 2 and the nvidia cards. You may have to tweak some drivers.

Oh did you know if you have 6 gigs+ of ram arma will crash? Best bug ever punish the overkill!

I disagree. I have Vista64 with 12 Gigs of ram and 2 gigs on the vid card. No crashing problems hurra. Not saying it isn't happening, just isn't happening to me.

On another note: I Need more tutorial missions or something. I can appreciate the scope and what someone with the desire and talent can make this game do, but I'm not him. Really wanting good coop missions and I can only seem to host the ones I've unlocked in single player. Any suggestions?

Gracias,
Nyxs

That is good to know it isn't everyone. The BI guys phrased it like it was a known issue to everyone.

The public 30 and 50 man coop servers are a blast to play on. Especially if they are running domination mod. As it cuts down on run for 10 mins to get shot before seeing am enemy.

Anyone have a link to the manual? I want to get it printed while at work.

I have 6GB and have only had one crash and that was when I clicked on the editor by accident. Other then that, just the usual bugs in the demo.

This is just me, and I haven't played the game yet, but watching the videos linked above, it looks like a long, long run into the combat situation and, after all that, a blind bullet dropping you.

Please tell me I'm wrong.

Also looking at the videos, the enemy is a shadow/vague outline way off in the distance. In game, can you tell friendlies from enemies? It seemed like everybody looked the same and if it got to close quarters, it would be difficult to keep friendly fire to a minimum.

Note: I pulled the demo down last night and will load it at the first opportunity, which looks like Thursday. Need to see if my rig can handle this game.
